PLATTSBURGH, N.Y., June 26 (UPI) --Richard Matt, one of the two convicted murderers who escaped from a prison in upstate New York three weeks ago, was shot dead Friday, law enforcement officials said.

Sources told CNN Matt was shot and officers were pursuing the second escaped inmate, David Sweat.

told The New York Times and ABC News, quoting sources, reported that Matt died of his injuries.

Earlier Friday, in a news conference, Maj. Charles Guess told reporters they believed the men were headed to Canada. "Based on what we know at this point, we have a high degree of confidence in our conclusion," he said.

It's unclear exactly where the shooting of Matt took place.

Police believe Matt and Sweat were moving under cover of darkness. They have found items apparently belonging to the men in the towns of Belmont and Malone, N.Y.

We have drawn definitive conclusions from that," Guess said.

Sources told the Plattsburgh Press-Republican that DNA from Matt was found at a cabin in Malone, which is about 10 miles south of the Canadian border.

DNA from at least one of the men was found over the weekend at a cabin in Owls Head, N.Y.

The two men, who used tools to escapefrom Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., on June 6, have picked up basic survival supplies to help them on the run. Guess said the terrain in which the men are traveling is difficult and rugged.

"It's as much a challenge to the inmates as it has been to the law enforcement," he said.

Police say Matt and Sweat had help in their escape from two prison workers -- Joyce Mitchell and Gene Palmer. Mitchell allegedly hid tools for the men to use in frozen hamburger meat.

She has pleaded not guilty to charges of promoting prison contraband, a felony, and criminal facilitation, a misdemeanor.

Palmer, a guard at the prison, was also arrested on charges of first-degree promoting prison contraband, two counts of tampering with evidence and official misconduct. He is accused of giving the frozen hamburger meat to the men.

He was initially suspended with pay, but his pay has now also been suspended, the Press- Republican reported.

People convicted of any kind of crime where their actions caused a human life to die, should be executed within 30 days of a jury decision. No exceptions.

I agree.

People say the death penalty doesn't deter murder. Last year we had 15,000 murders and 10 executions. Now imagine if we had 15,000 murders and 15,000 executions.

I think there'd be a deterrence.

Statistically, it would have to deter murder. There would be 15000 less scumbags that could commit any crime.

It's certainly tempting... however, it might be worthwhile taking him alive so he can rat-out the numbskulls who helped him escape. Shed some light on the details and that sort of thing...

They were in possession of shotguns, left in a hunting camp that they were hiding out in. As stupid as it sounds, some retards (they were correctional officers) actually left their guns in their camp.

Reports I've heard suggest Richard shot first, giving his position away as LE got closer. I also heard he fired rounds at someone, that person did not realize he/she was being shot at until they noticed bullet holes in the vehicle.

Reports are sketchy... they are tight lipped because they are supposedly hot on the others trail.

Self defense is a affirmative defense... and when successful, the defendant isn't "convicted of justified homicide"... he's ACQUITTED of a crime. I never advocated that when human life is taken due to self defense, that should be punished at all... and your willingness to accuse me of suggesting such, and going down this ridiculous path of debate, is a waste of my time.

Grow up, Mister White was intelligent enough to understand what I was saying... you are grouchy and argumentative.

No,I just understand it is the nature of a control freak like you to extend every power to the state if given the chance.

Murder is a very "big" word in the sense that it means different things to different people, and often that is based on emotion.

It is insane to give the state the blanket authority to execute anyone convicted of any degree of what is being called "murder".

Two guys get in a bar fight and one gets knocked down and hits his head on something and dies. You want them executed for murder, just like it was a thrill killing or a contract murder.
