"I'm running for President of the United States of America. Join me," he tweeted with a link to his campaign site shortly after noon ahead of a planned formal announcement in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner Wednesday evening. "A Special Announcement From Bobby Jindal. My name is Bobby Jindal, and I am running for President of the United States of America. There were three people I think you would agree my wife Supriya and I had to tell first," said a second tweet. Jindal's tweet came shortly adviser Curt Anderson told reporters at a morning briefing: "We get into the race at 5 o'clock tonight," A hidden-camera style video of the governor telling his kids about his decision to run followed. His daughter quickly leveraged the information, requesting a puppy as her share of the deal. "OK, if we move into the White House, you can have a puppy," Jindal told his daughter. Jindal joins an already crowded field of Republican candidates including Jeb Bush, Rick Perry and Mike Huckabee, former governors of Florida, Texas and Arkansas respectively, US Senators Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham, former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina; and real estate mogul Donald Trump. Once viewed as a rising star of the Republican party, Jindal, 44, who was the youngest American governor when first elected in 2007, is now polling toward the bottom of the Republican field, registering at just 1 percent in the latest CNN/ORC poll this month. Analysts suggested that he faces an uphill task in his campaign and even faces the prospect of being eliminated from Fox News's presidential debates starting August 6 as the channel has decided to limit it to the top 10. Jindal, who received wide support from Indian-Americans in his Congressional and gubernatorial campaigns, seems to have lost much traction with the community since he recently declared that he was tired of hyphenated Americans. His parents, he declared, "They weren't coming to raise 'Indian-Americans.' They were coming to raise Americans." As Pearson Cross, a political science professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette who is writing a book on him told the Washington Post: "There's not much Indian left in Bobby Jindal." The Louisiana-born son of immigrant parents from India, Jindal converted from Hinduism to Christianity as a teen, and was later baptised a Catholic as a student at Brown University. The Rhodes scholar was the second Indian-American to be elected to the US House of Representatives in 2004 after Dalip Singh Saund, a Democrat, in 1957. He was re-elected to the Congress in 2006 before making his second run for governor in 2007. He was re-elected in 2011. Poster Comment: We need a Hindu-Catholic anchor baby?

His parents were legal immigrants. I'm not sure if they entered as resident aliens (green card holders) but that is most likely. Back in 1971, immigration enforcement was a lot stricter and green card status was more difficult to obtain. NYT: He is pretty Americanized but I'm not sure why that is a mark against him. So are nearly all the white people in America and we don't disparage their family's immigration history. If you want an example of an anchor-baby presidential candidate, recall Bill Richardson who ran in 2004, I think (or 2008). Also, New Mexico governor. His mother came here alone for a few months to give birth and both she and he returned to Mexico. The laws at the time were that both parents had to come and they had to be here a longer period of time and remain residents. IOW, an actual anchor baby. I notice he chose the name Bobby at age 4 because he was a big Brady Bunch fan in the Seventies.

Piyush Jindal was born on June 10, 1971, in Baton Rouge to Hindu parents who had come to the United States six months before so his mother could pursue a graduate degree in nuclear physics at Louisiana State University. His father was an engineer from the Punjab region of India, the only one of nine siblings to attend high school. The younger Jindal, growing up in Baton Rouge, was not expected to come home from school with anything less than 100 on tests. Public high school in Baton Rouge was followed by Brown, where Jindal was Phi Beta Kappa, and a conversion to Roman Catholicism that Jindal has described in transformative terms. "I draw my definition of integrity from my Christian faith," Jindal said during the campaign. "In my faith, you give 100 percent of yourself to God."
