A truck carrying hundreds of visas for Mexican nationals was stolen on Tuesday on the road to Monterrey, the US Consulate General in the northeastern Mexican city said. The vehicle was going to bring stacks of approved visa applications to Mexicans in Monterrey, and also in Guadalajara, when it vanished in Matamoros, a city located on the southern bank of the Rio Grande directly across the border from Brownsville, Texas.
The US diplomatic mission warned that personal data in the applications could be used for criminal activities, while Mexican police suspect that smugglers need these papers to traffic people illegally across the US-Mexican border.
