In the wake of a national conversation on confederate symbols, which led South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to announce Monday that the confederate flag would be taken down from the state Capitol building, some are bringing attention to the confederate symbols still standing here in Austin. The president of University of Texas at Austin, Greg Fenves, met Monday with student leaders who are demanding a statue of Jefferson Davis be removed from the school's campus. Davis owned dozens of slaves and was president of the Confederacy during the Civil War. "We just believe the statue represents a history of racism and intolerance, and it has no place on this campus, which is a beacon of bringing all different kinds of people together and promoting diversity," says Taral Patel, chief of staff for the UT Student Government. An online petition for removal of the statue has racked up more than 1,500 signatures since it was posted Sunday afternoon on change.org. "It feels very degrading to us, and unwelcoming. And I think that if we pay the same amount of tuition as everybody else, we have the right to feel as welcome as everybody else does," says Abigail Haile, an African American UT undergrad who signed the petition. A university spokesperson says Fenves takes the issue seriously and has been gathering information on it since he took office about two weeks ago. "The student and university leaders will work collaboratively to continue gathering all of the information and perspectives needed to make a decision about the statue," spokesperson Gary Susswein said via email. As for next steps, Susswein says the office will make an announcement, though not a final decision, later this week. Poster Comment:

In recent years, the GOP has invested heavily in voter suppression at the state level. The absolute LAST thing in the world that they want is an issue that turns African-Americans out to the polls in droves. Throwing the Confederacy under the bus is a small price to pay in hopes of capturing the Presidency in 2016. If THAT happens, you'll discover that our national nightmare has just begun.

Why do you deny this? Change the term voting supression to vote dampening - making it harder for people to find a polling place or to register and when regsitered make the verification enough to throw you off if you make a clerical error (leaving out your middile initial or you got married and lost your maiden name, etc).

No. I am amused people who call themselves Republicans defend a Confederate symbol. The GOP made its bones killing Confederates. Having Southern Republicans support the confederate flag just proves once again that most Southern Republicans are the racialist Dixie-crats that Nixon invited into the GOP as part of his southern strategy.
Only in the speed at which freedoms are lost or government grows. Ever since FDR, the country has moved steadily Left - albeit at different rates of speed depending on what figurehead was supposedly in charge. No - there's no REAL difference. When a culture/country/empire - whatever you want to call it - is in its death throes, there's little that can be done (short of armed rebellion WHICH I AM NOT ADVOCATING) to change it.

That does not apply anywhere here. You can still fly any flag you want that you want as a private individual. If the confederate flag is voted out - as it was voted in only in the 1960s - then so be it - no rights were violated. And in fact in some of these cases they jerry rigged it to where you will need a 2/3rds vote to change the flag. Lastly, Amazon and ebay are private companies which can decide to sell or not sell on their own. You are free not to shop there. So no, it is not rocket science but you failed using an abacus.

There was no other way for me to read it. If you had specifically meant the flag by the memorial, then you would have said “defend the Confederate symbol displayed at the memorial …” I can’t read your intent, I can only read what you post.
