The Last Enemy is a BBC production hosted by Matthew Goode,a British actor that gives a brief intro into each episode of this series.

The focus of this dramatic mini-series is the loss of privacy due to increasing crime and the War on Terrorism. It is set in England, and it seems they are much further down this road than we are in the US. In fact,in one intro Mr.Goode explains that ID cards that hold all your personal information have already been approved and are in the works for issue to all citizens in the UK soon.

The "villian" in this series is really a software program called "TIS",for Total Information Services. And total it is. You can't even ride a subway without flashing your card, and ALL your personal info is coded on that card and the info is available to any official that wants to view it. It is also pretty much a cashless world because you can use this same card to pay rent or buy anything. You even have to swipe your card in a card reader to sell anything.

The story stars when Stephen Ezard (Benedict Cumberbatch) comes back to the UK after living in China for several years as a scientific researcher to attend the funeral of his brother. All these changes have happened while he was away,so it is all new to him.

It is a story about the loss of privacy and individual freedoms and the corruption that comes with government officials being in bed with corporations seeking government contracts. We are talking about billions of dollars at stake here,so it should come as no surprise to anything the lengths these people will go to in order to protect their tea carts.

The show has the typical BBC/Masterpiece Theater high quality scripts and acting, and that alone makes it worth watching. I am hoping it also opens a few eyes on the people who think "that can never happen here". All you have to do is just glance around and you can see it has been happening for years.

Here is a link to the IMDB review of the program that shows and names all the actors.

I am watching this series now on Amazon Prime because I can view it there for free, but be aware that Amazon edits the series to avoid showing a breast or to avoid non-PC language. Who knows what else they cut out?

I suggest you watch it on PBS if possible. I wathced one episode there and that's why I know amazon cut and edited the episode when they show it. Subscribe to *Bill of Rights-Constitution*

Sounds interesting, petey. I'll keep my eye out for it.

I think you may have done a movie review on "Enemy of the State" with Gene Hackman way back when on elPee maybe. It sounds like a similar type of show or theme.

Yes,I did. I love that movie. Another similar one is Arlington Road.

It sounds like a similar type of show or theme.

Similar, but with the British twist. BTW,in the beginnings of Episode 5,Goode mentions that "next year everyone in England will have a National ID card."

IIRC,that was 2 years ago. I'm wondering if it happened, and if it did were there many problems reported.

You can view all 5 episodes on Amazon right now. Your ROKU has a Amazon.com channel.

If you are a Amazon Prime member you can watch it for free.

Of if you have a tuner like my channel master, you can pull it off the air from a local PBS station for free using a HD antenna.

You should also be able to stream it from the PBS website on the net. Use a wi-fe connection,a ethernet cable,or similar device to hook your computer to your big screen tv,and watch it there.

Let me know what you think.

Personally,I love most of the BBC dramss. Especially the historic stuff.

You might also want to check out the BBC series MI-5. One of the most realistic and best written and acted series to ever be broadcast.

Last I heard they scrapped those plans back in 2010 but said that foreign nationals would still be required to use them.

Thanks!

For all we know this series woke up the English voters in time to get them to scrap it.

I'm thinking mentioning the Magna Carta in the series was a big help.

BBC does produce a quality product, but there is no relationship between socialism and the BBC output.

The BBC is not afraid to tackle any subject or person and tear it a new one if they felt it was required (even royalty). When I was there it seemed like their favorite topic was politicians they disliked, from all Parties.

PBS does more of this than most conservatives are willing to admit. All anyone who doesn't believe it has to do is watch Frontline and POV a few times.

It was called Spooks in the UK. You are correct- one of the best TV series ever made. A movie- "Spooks: The Greater Good" is finally out!

Series to look for:

"Peaky Blinders"- period drama set in Birmingham 1918 with Cillian Murphy
Last years "Happy Valley" - a wild ride
"The Honourable Woman" - The Beeb tackles Israel and Palestine
"Hustle"- Like "The Sting" only better and for 8 series

The BBC UK version lists at 20 minutes longer than the disc version marketed in the US by WGBH Boston and sold by Amazon. I believe the editing down is done at WGBH in Boston. I believe Amazon just obtains an edited US product. I first noticed this editing thing a few years ago.

The Last Enemy (1 x 90 minutes, 4 x 60 minutes) is a Box TV production for the BBC and WGBH/Boston. Shooting took place in London and Romania.

90 + 240 = 330 minutes

310 mins on 2 discs
