Title: Rand Paul to GOP: It's Time to Move Beyond the Second Amendment

June 18, 2015 Sen. Rand Paul took a risk Thursday. Speaking to an audience of religious conservatives in the wake of a racially charged shooting in South Carolina, Paul delicately suggested that Republicans might want to start focusing on other parts of the Bill of Rights than the Second Amendment.

"Everybody is for the Second Amendment. All 55 candidates running for president are for the Second Amendment—on our side," Paul told the crowd. "But the thing is that a lot of young people, that might not be their primary issue."

Leaving room, even rhetorical room, to one's right—particularly on an issue as important to the Republican base as gun rights—is a gamble in the crowded 2016 GOP primary. But it's one very much in keeping with the Kentucky senator's campaign of almost-gonzo optimism, and it's the type of decision backed by Paul's personal conviction that his libertarian philosophy can unite traditional Republican voters with more independent-minded young people and minorities.

Speaking at the Faith and Freedom Coalition summit, Paul's remarks also mentioned the Wednesday night shooting that killed nine black church congregants in Charleston, South Carolina.

"We had the shooting this morning in South Carolina. What kind of person goes in a church and shoots nine people? There's a sickness in our country. There's something terribly wrong, but it isn't going to be fixed by your government. It's people straying away, it's people not understanding where salvation comes from. And I think that if we understand that, we'll understand and have better expectations of what we get from our government."

Paul's discussion of the Second Amendment was only a snippet of a longer and broader speech, much of which focused on religious liberty and, in particular, Paul's efforts to defend Christians overseas. He touted an amendment in which he proposed to cut off foreign aid to countries that persecute Christians, and said it was a sign of Washington's disconnect from the country that it was voted down in committee by a wide margin.

The speech was sandwiched in between those of his Senate colleagues and fellow presidential contenders, Marco Rubio (who did not mention the Charleston shooting in his speech) and Ted Cruz (who spoke of the event and began his remarks with a moment of silence). As part of his quest to distinguish himself from his GOP competitors while not alienating base voters, Paul emphasized his record of visiting black communities in Washington, Baltimore, and Chicago.

Polling suggests Paul's gauge of young people's enthusiasm about guns is accurate. A 2013 Pew poll found that just 16 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds own a gun, compared to 24 percent of the total population. A 2013 Harvard University study found that young people are split in their opinion about the National Rifle Association.

But young people don't tend to vote in the Republican presidential primaries. At one point in the 2012 election, CBS found that white evangelicals made up half of Republican primary and caucus voters.

And therein lies Paul's big challenge: He's trying to win the White House by reaching well past the Republican base, but if he can't win over enough of the party's base in the primary, his general election aspirations will be over long before they ever begin.

Look at the wednesday night shooting as one white man's version of the knock-out game that has become a sport among black punks.

I don't want to look at it that way. That is a twisted dark way to look at it.

The murderer should be put to death.

The murderer should be put to death.

And so should the black punk knock-out players and other punks along with Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and half the black "leadership" in the country. But you're too beaten down, intimidated, and compliant to face it or say it.

Should running up and hitting someone carry the death penalty. Nah that is to harsh.

I don't think Al Sharpton should be put to death. As awful as he is.

Half the black leadershiup in this country is how many people? It sounds like a bunch. It also sounds crazy.

It's not that I'm beaten down. It's just what you propose isn't just.

Yeah because I'm not for killing half the black leadership. For what?

You never told me how many. Are you afraid to tell me how many have to be killed?

Yeah because I'm not for killing half the black leadership. For what?

For our survival. Otherwise you're going to have hundreds more of them traveling to organize more riots to support people like Big Brown's robbing a store and rouging up the store manager. The Farahkans and black troops standing with clubs at election sites to prevent white people from voting, need to be dealt with.

I see you are somewhat of a coward. Afraid to answer how many blacks you think need to be killed. Why is that?

I notice you cleverly manipulated my phrasing to suit your own purposes and assumed neither I nor anyone else would catch it.

The original context was: Yeah because I'm not for killing half the black leadership. For what?

In answer to your question, I have no specific number. What I do realize is that it should be done as a matter of preventing black leasership from conducting an aggressive and highly successful campaign to impose subjugation of the white race to a type of oppressive punative black Marxist counterculture and insanity.

To hell with angry black authoritarianism.

It's apparent that you have already been subjugated into spineless compliance.

What I endorse is a program of sending anybody who doesn't like it here back to their area of origin with a check for $5,000 so they could live like potentates.

Black ancestry in the USA have been in the USA for centruies longer than most white people's ancestry. In some parts of the south they had a higher population than whites - so this is the black man's country on that criteria than it is the white man's.

Why don't you go back to Europe if you don't like that?

Time one's ancestors supposedly spent here means nothing if a person has no allegiance to the society, but in fact is in active contention with it and is determined to subvert or destroy it and its rational principles. It is not their country and they have no investment in it. That goes for everybody.

As a correlary: If, in numerous generations, they have not made any attempt to asasimilate as rational self supporting individuals, they should be viewed with suspicion.

You mean the society that enslaved them and used their labor - which at one time was valued more than all the land value in the USA? That society? When did your ancestors get to the USA? 1920s? 1860s?

But you are going to kick them out? It's their country. Move back to Ireland or whatever. You would probably live longer and be healthier.

You seem determined to press the point that ancestory licenses one to be a destructive or subversive force in this country by right of citizenship and some kind of inherent ownership. In other words it entitles one to be a thug using political means or various threats of violence. It does nothing of the kind. The only thing it conferrs is the right to conduct your personal life in a manner that adheres to rational and reasonable amount of prudence and foresight with honor according to the standards of the culture and to be self supporting in a way that makes a contribution to sustaining society. People who do not conform in that regard are not realistically to be classified as citizens, but are merely overtolerated inhabitants, social sponges, and aggressive parasites the most vocal of whom become movement founders or leaders. America is becoming strangled by them. Send them them the hell out.

So the whites that genocided the Indians and enslaved millions of blacks can be considered subversive and destructive then.

That fought a Civil War that killed more Americans than Hitler killed? Those peace loving whites? The ones that bomb other nations who never attacked the USA?

I believe that you said you are a christian. What did the book of Deuteronomy promise would happen to people that lived as the indians lived.

I don't consider myself superior. I do consider what was our culture to be superior.

I'm ethnocentric and proud of it.
