The Times now reports that Disney has reversed its decision to lay off the workers and canceled training of the replacements. This follows public uproar, two investigations by the Department of Labor into outsourcing firms, complaints to the Justice Department, and calls for an investigation into the H-1B Visa program by Senator Bill Nelson. One of the workers said, "We were told our jobs were continuing and we should consider it as if nothing had happened until further notice." Obviously, prices and profits are way up at Disney's parks with the existing staff and they are constantly at capacity. This is not a cost-cutting measure to save money and lower ticket prices (for which I would be a little more sympathetic). This is using foreign workers to displace your longtime workforce so you can rake in even more obscene prices in your parks. To: misterwhite (#5) Disney has a record of large and constant price increases in recent years, taking the market for all it is worth because they are constantly booked. A lot of their clientele are foreigners, not Americans. Yet, Disney never said they need more employees to interact with foreign visitors and most of those in the proposed layoff were not in positions directly interacting with the public. Disney is following an Apple strategy. They most certainly will avoid ever being the lowest priced theme parks. They want to cater to the rich only and have prices that tend to discourage the Great Unwashed. You also find reports that Six Flags and other amusement parks have raised their prices sharply as well, just so they don't look mediocre by charging only half as much as Disney. And geography and the proximity of competing theme parks does have an effect on these ticket prices and availability.
