Responding to a deadly outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in South Korea, the World Health Organization (WHO) is asking people to resist the temptation to drink camel urine. The beverage could be playing a roll in spreading the infection, which has killed 6 people and sickened 87 others.

[I]n parts of the Middle East, drinking camel urine is not as uncommon as one might think. In parts of the Arabian Peninsula, the liquid is consumed for its allegedly palliative properties. The Prophet Mohammed is said to have informed his followers to drink camel urine to cure them of disease.

In 2013, an intrepid reporter for Vice sampled the substance while in Yemen. “The taste of warm piss is, as you would expect, disgusting,” he wrote. “But when it’s mixed with camel milk, as it traditionally is, it’s even worse.

For some reason, this made me think of the Patches O'Houlihan scene in the movie "Dodgeball"

Sure but this is actually a widespread and dangerous practice in the Mideast due to the Hadith attributed to Mohammed. Unlike the written Koran which is considered to be authoritatively written by Mohammed, the Hadith are collections of supposed sayings of Mohammed and most of them are certainly false or misattributed local folk sayings.

It's a tradition of "Mohammed says..." but without any proof that Mohammed ever said any of this crap.

Interestingly, most Western converts to Islam find the Hadith so insane and contradictory that they don't study or read them, relying only on the Koran.

These hadith are responsible for most Islamic mischief, even though there are plenty of problems with the sura of the Koran as well.

I won't joke about that - if you live in an arid wasteland such stuff is probably a life saver. I know of occassions where blood is drunk to stave off the thirst until water is found.

By the way, there is a fad for drinking unpasturized camel's milk for the same reasons. It is illegal to sell unpasturized camel's milk (the process is said to destroy the beneficial qualities) so there is an underground market for raw camel's milk in the states.

Among African tribes.

Keep in mind, no one is claiming any water shortages are forcing them to drink camel urine mixed with camel milk.

If they're stupid enough to drink it or associate with people who drink it, why interfere. The world is better off without them.

No, I don't mean the African tribes that drink blood as a regular part of their diet (blood pudding pies are a British staple, by the way) - I mean for emergency purposes people would tap the vien of their horse or pack animal to stave off thirst.

They aren't drinking its urine, without or without its milk.
