WASHINGTON — Donald Trump’s dream of the White House is built on the belief that America will turn to a can-do outsider, particularly a successful business tycoon, to fix the mess that is Washington.

It’s likely just a dream.

Voters enjoy candidates full of outrage and without ties to the byzantine, polarized, money-saturated ways of the nation’s capital. Audiences flock to hear and cheer them in New Hampshire, Iowa and elsewhere. And then they usually vote for a more statesmanlike, experienced choice.

Trump, 69, the brash New York City-based billionaire businessman and television show host, plans a “major announcement” Tuesday on his presidential intentions. He’s flirted with running before, but this time he appears to be taking the steps needed to formally enter the Republican race.

He’d start as a clear underdog and wouldn’t even be the favorite among outsider candidates. Former neurosurgeon Ben Carson’s supporters have spent the last year raising money and building an organization, and former business executive Carly Fiorina has drawn friendly audiences in key primary and caucus states.

Trump, like Carson and Fiorina, faces another challenge: No political experience.

The last president who had never run for public office was Dwight Eisenhower. While never before elected , he WAS supreme commander of the Allied forces in Europe during World War II.

Isn't this the fourth or fifth time that The Donald has threatened to run for prez?

I don't think he ever threatened to run. I think he said he was considering it. A threat would be something negative. I think he offers something positive.

I prefer Trump to

Jeb, Carly, Christie, Kasich, Perry, Carson, ...Well put it this way I prefer him to pretty much all of them.

You sure lie a lot. He is worth 9 billion. A very successful man.

Trump's polling is just awful, the worst of all GOP candidates.

Over 20% of Republicans said they would never vote for him. His unfavorability rating is over 60%. The list of sour stats on Trump is endless.

I don't see where you get enough indy or Dem votes for Trump to overcome this huge deficit in the GOP.

Keep in mind, even Trump's TV show plays well only in Blue states. Like Christie, he is from a deep Blue state and is primarily popular for his brashness and that is largely centered in Blue east coast states.

Trump will add an element of surprise to the debates. He might even increase viewership. He's earned a chance to bash Jeb! [Bush] and the rest.

He might be able to decrease his negative numbers, by beating up on some of these Rotten Republicans.

I saw a speech on Youtube where he said he would call the Chinese leaders motherfuckers to their face or some such

You are lying again. That isn't what he said. But he wouldn't bend over and take it up the ass from the Chinese as our current leaders do. Like your candidates do.

I don't recall the exact curse words Trump used but he used actual curse words in a speech. That sound presidential material to you? I honestly don't understand modern conservatives. The same conservatives that for months would freak out that Obama changed the Oval Office dress rules and wore relaxed clothing / no ties but suddenly (some) conservatives are Ok with a presidential candidate that uses dirty words in campaign speeches.

I linke d the Vegas speech from a few years ago. It's a funny speech - and I assume it was made for showbusiness purposes.

I read that a lot of that is 'real estate' value which in many cases Trump does not own but licensed his name to. Trump is rich of course but there have been questions on exactly how rich he is.

I'm watching a bit of Trump's speech. Some really funny stuff in there. He's having some fun with shots at Hitlery, Jeb, Obola, etc. He's rich enough that he doesn't care what the hell he says. The media might just enjoy using Trump to gin up some ad wars. They are eager for some bloodletting.

We can also recycle some old Trump 2012 graphics. Here's one of a half-dozen Trump White House makeovers.

That is the line! A GOP candidate using that kind of langauge should be a disqualifier for the same Oval Office Reagan was in.

I have to ask, will the Chinese respond back to "President Trump" who are you calling a mother fucker? I would not like to see what a billion insulted Chinamen do in response to an insult like that.

He recently called all the other candidates "assholes". He had already formed an exploratory committee, showing that his discussion of running this time had grown beyond talk. In the run-up to the announcement, Trump has spoken in his trademark blunt, direct tone about President Barack Obama, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican candidates, particularly Mario Rubio and Jeb Bush, saying each had made an a------ out of themselves.

Just using the statements made by the online conservative community that was angry Obama did not wear a tie in office. But it's OK if they use street language in a speech. That uplifts the office of the presidency!

He should have run third-party or indy. He would have had much more reach.

Jumping into a very crowded GOP field makes him look like he's just angling to play kingmaker later, maybe dropping out even before the Iowa caucus. Lots of pundits think that's his plan. An ego like The Donald's won't tolerate a 1%-2% showing in IA or NH too well.

He might just be in this to play attack dog on Jeb and Hitlery. Trump is a devious fellow.

Trump did not own it. He bailed out of it years ago. Trump received 5% stock in exchange for the use of his name and likeness.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump_Entertainment_Resorts

2009 bankruptcy and restructuring

The casino group filed for bankruptcy for the third time in February 2009 owing $1.2 billion. Two sets of debt holders eventually proposed reorganization plans for the group in U.S. bankruptcy court.

Trump initially made an agreement with banker/high-stakes poker player Andrew Beal, owner of Beal Bank, which held $500 million in the group's debt, to take over the resorts. However, citing concerns about the bank's experience with gaming, he dropped them in favor of the hedge fund Avenue Capital Management, a plan favored by other bond-holders. Beal then partnered with investor, Carl Icahn, who had worked on restructuring another Atlantic City casino, the Tropicana. In court, Trump argued that he would fight the Icahn/Beal team if they sought to use his name and likeness on the group's properties. Instead he signed an agreement with Avenue Capital in which he would receive 5% stock in the reorganized company and another 5% in exchange for the use of his name and likeness in perpetuity.

The RCP poll of polls indicates Trump enters at 9th place. Anyone below 10th when the debates occur, does not make the debates.

It's not great, but it isn't the worst. The worst is when people have to ask "Who?"

I doubt he will hang around past the date when he would have to file his fiancials. I doubt he could get the GOP nomination if he does hang around.

None of the prospects has emerged as particularly inspiring. I don't see how the GOP plans to successfully market another Bush for the White House. "He's not Hillary" is not a campaign slogan, especially if Hillary is not the opponent.

I'm still doubtful that Hillary can stumble all the way to the nomination. Bill is a great politician. Hillary is awful.

On the Dem side, Bernie Sanders is polling 11.6 which is higher than any of the Republicans. If Hillary implodes, Sanders with Elizabeth Warren could be a formidable ticket in debates.

It will be interesting to see how it shapes up.
