DEVELOPING – Multiple suspects with automatic weapons opened fire on police officers outside Dallas Police headquarters early Saturday morning, before one man fled the scene in an armored van, leading police on a chase that ended in an ongoing standoff at a nearby parking lot where additional shots were fired. Police also reported finding two explosive devices near police headquarters. The pipe bombs detonated as they were being handled by an Explosive Ordinance Robot. Police said other suspicious packages have been cleared. Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution. Dallas Police Chief David Brown said the shootout began about 12:30 a.m. local time when the suspects pulled up to the building and began firing. He said at least one of the suspects fled the scene in a van that rammed a police cruiser before leading police on the chase that ended at the parking lot. Brown says negotiations are ongoing with the suspect in the van. The has told police that he is injured, but authorities cannot confirm any injuries, Fox4News.com reported. #breaking As the Explosive Ordinance Robot attempted to move one of the bags @DallasPD HQ, the bag exploded on its own #DallasPDShooting Police said conflicting witness accounts made it difficult to immediately determine how many shooters were involved and authorities were trying to determine a motive. Brown said the suspect driving the van has told officers that he blames police for losing custody of his son and “accusing him of being a terrorist.” The gunman also said he had explosives in the van, which appeared to be outfitted with gun ports in the sides. Brown says negotiations are going on with the suspect in the van. One of the suspects has told police that he is injured, but authorities cannot confirm any injuries, Fox4News.com reported. Brown said, based on witness accounts, as many as four suspects may have been involved in the original shooting, including some who may have been positioned at elevated positions. Police couldn’t confirm how many shooters were involved and where any additional suspects may be located. Police later found two more suspicious packages. Seems to me that DPS is handling this "armored van" and driver fine without military assault vehicles. And the van wasn't so armored if the perp is claiming he was injured. Beyond that, how many times has any sort of armored vehicle been used to commit a crime in this country? It is vanishingly rare. I doubt you can cite another instance. The greater threat from this guy were the bombs but it seems he was incompetent with bomb placement as well. A stupid plan by a stupid man which will end stupidly. Now all that remains is to find out if the FBI or one of their agentes provocateur put him up to doing this or supplied him explosives/guns/ammo for his actions.

Maybe we should wait to find out if it really is an armored van. I suppose he might have bought an old van from an armored car company. Some of them are just vans making cash runs to local merchants, not armored trucks used at banks. So there are vans that are considered armored, at least partially. But there aren't that many of them around.

Seems to me that the 50-caliber round the police sniper put through his windshield to take him out came from a military surplus weapon. And I guess the police would have rather been in or behind MRAPs than their police cruisers while they were taking fire from him. But then, what do I know....I wasn't the one being shot at.

In a press conference, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said that a Dallas SWAT sniper shot the suspect through the front windshield and that police were working to identify the person inside the vehicle and whether they had killed him.

I don't see that headline elsewhere yet.
Apparently a sniper shot him just before I turned it on, and they had a robot trying to knock-out the windshield so they could look inside... the newscasters were commenting that previous reports of accomplices were probably wrong because of different 911 reports coming in from different witnesses/bystanders with different vantage points... it looks like it's just one guy who's pissed-off at the police because he has an ongoing gripe about a custody battle over his kids.
