They said she had high cholesterol because it was 180. First of all, when did anyone monitor the cholesterol of 9 year olds? Second, that would be quite good for any adult. She is skinny as a rail and quite active. She doesn't even like cholesterol containing foods much. They acted like she was at death's door. I tried to tell my wife that if she is hungry, let her eat. It's hardly like my daughter is a food addict. My daughter always gets the foods she needs and never even shows any signs of overeating. It's like these doctors get their training from the discount bin at Barnes and Nobles. The Doc is going to try to get your daughter on statins. My dad informed me if it all - years ago. And I spent over a decade arguing with my doctor about it. Luckily, late last year, my doctor moved to a different state! Read up on statins. Get informed. And steer clear of them! Just my non-professional advice! Conventional medicine says under 200 is good, but I think also says the ratio is more important, so maybe they see the ratio as out of sync. That's what conventional medicine says. But it also says that the vast majority of cholesterol is manufactured by the body, not assimilated via foods. Cholesterol is an important ingredient in human physiology. Our brains are made of it, in fact. An alternate school in the subject says that heart disease is not caused by cholesterol, but rather excess sugar. The buildup of cholesterol on arterial walls occurs because sugar damages the walls, and the body responds by packing cholesterol on top of it to act as a band-aid. Doctors subscribing to this are not even bothering to have their cholesterol checked, considering the values meaningless. This would possibly explain why some regions have significant portions of their population with very high cholesterol readings but also very little heart disease. Back to your daughter.... at 9 years old, she should eat however often she's inclined to, provided food is healthy. Which is actually my advice to anyone at any age. If you take several niacin supplement capsules every day, you HDL to LDL ratio will be above normal. I'm not sure how healthy you will be, though. Back to my original point. I am a type 2 diabetic, and this myriad of pills - and insulin - quite frankly, I don't think that they 'help' me as much as they are purported to.
