secret-omaha-police-video

If it wasn’t caught on video, few would have believed it. “I think we all know what would have happened if he wasn’t there,” Octavius Johnson said about the video.

It was his childhood friend who had secretly recorded four police officers abusing him in the video.

“It would have been swept under the rug,” Johnson said without hesitation.

Is he right? He certainly seems to be.

But now, because of the quick-thinking of his buddy, all of the four officers involved have been fired.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer was very animated when he talked reporters at a press conference about the “embarrassing” incident.

“Many of the police actions that took place that day are in violation of our policies and do not represent how I want our officers to conduct themselves,” he said.

“The final resolution will be fair to the citizens of Omaha, the Omaha Police Department and the specific employees involved so that we can move forward and restore any public trust that may have eroded with this incident.”

The Johnson family is not satisfied with the firing. It doesn’t go far enough, they said.

Now, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have filed suit seeking damages for the anxiety and depression that have surfaced in the months since. A full eight officers have been named in the suit with another 24 who remain unnamed.

“This incident will live with our family for the rest of our lives,” Sharee Johnson – the mother of the two young men – said, “None of us can call 911 when we need help and believe that police would be there to help us. We live in a city where we feel we have no protection.”

The suit alleges that dozens of Omaha police officers turned a parking violation into a brutal arrest, unconstitutional raid on the family’s house, and confiscation of video that was taken of these illegal police actions. All of this stemmed from Octavius Johnson parking his truck on the wrong part of the street. A secondary video taken by Johnson’s childhood friend shows the incident from a second story vantage point. Police can clearly be seen grabbing an non-resisting Johnson by the neck, and throwing him to the ground, then punching him numerous times, as other officers rush in.

“He went around my neck, threw me to the ground, choked me out to the point where I couldn’t breathe or speak,” Johnson said of the illegal assault by police officers. “The officer told me to stop resisting, punched me in the face.” As if this were not enough, they implied that they would murder him right there in the street, saying “do you want to die today?”

Octavius’ brother Juaquez, was chased and then arrested for filming the arrest on a camera phone, even though he was on private property, and did not interfere with the illegal arrest.

It is a breath of fresh air to see the Omaha Police Department act quickly to fire these officers, but the Johnson family is right, were it not for that second video of the assault, no action would have been taken on their complaints alone. They would have been ignored, shrugged off and ultimately they would have been prosecuted for the crimes alleged in the illegal arrest, crimes which they never committed.

"Police can clearly be seen grabbing an non-resisting Johnson"

I clearly saw them grabbing a resisting and noncompliant Johnson.

"Octavius’ brother Juaquez, was chased and then arrested ... did not interfere with the illegal arrest."

He stepped into the street and interfered with the arrest.

The Police chief disagrees.

“Many of the police actions that took place that day are in violation of our policies and do not represent how I want our officers to conduct themselves,” he said.

He stepped into the street and interfered with the arrest.

He was standing AT LEAST 10 yards away.

He was told to stay on the sidewalk.

You know that how exactly?

He moved between the sidewalk and the street - public property and he was still too far away to "interfere" with any arrest.

This is an old story. I remember that fact from the original article.

You may remember that Detective Kerrie Orozco was killed in Omaha.

Another interesting point: Omaha, Nebraska: The Most Dangerous Place In America To Be Black

I would venture a guess that the 6 cops who were fired over the incident in this article could GAS less whether they continue to kill each other or not.

Omaha, Nebraska: The Most Dangerous Place In America To Be Black

Guys' I live in Maryland and I am disgusted at the Mayor and prosecutor's persecution of those police, and the crime it has resulted it.

But what is really damning about this video is that they chased and arrested the other guy who was trying to record it, so that we would have trouble telling what really happened .

When they do that it makes no sense to given them any benefit of the doubt, they clearly didn't want us to know what happened,

I saw a cop in another video not long ago on youtube chase someone and knock the phone cam out of a woman's hand then kick it, the local police reported that it was a US Marshal. It was on the local news which posted the youtube link.

Study the video very carefully a few times. You will see the officer trying to direct Octavius towards the police car. When Octavius took a few steps towards the police car, he gave two (what my be) strong pushbacks against the arresting officer. It was at the time the officer slammed him to the ground. Octavius was struggling and resisting arresting on the ground and the officer was punching him to subdue him.

Then watch the actions of Octavius’ brother Juaquez. It is easy to see that the cops knew he was video recording the entire event. The officer gave Juaquez ample warnings to stay on the curb, it looks like he did at least twice. It was only after the warnings and when Juaquez stepped down off the curb did he start to run because he knew he was going to be arrested….and the officer gave chase. The officer did not chase him to confiscate the camera, he already knew it was there and could have taken it at any time earlier. He chased Juaquez because when he stepped down from the curb and did not follow instructions, he was going to arrest him for interfering.

A poster commented that the appearance of so many officers made it look like a company of Chinese Airborne troops had landed. There is probably a good reason for the large number of officers responding, that is one tough neighborhood. (See the link in Post #10).

Six officers were fired as a result of this incident. I make no judgment since I am not privy to the information. The firing was a decision made by the Chief and it was his decision to make. I am only relating to you what I see in the video, you of course can view the video and many any conclusions.

That is totally ridiculous. That he chased him down and arrested him for stepping off the curb, and he didn't care that he was being recorded? Stepping off the curb with a cam is a crime?

Please, he clearly went after him for recording it more closer so we wouldn't be sure what happened and so we would give them the benefit of the doubt of what happened, just Like you just did.

Why don't YOU post his brother's video on youtube and imbed it here so we can see it from the other angle??

Thank you,

I am normally willing to give the police the benefit of the doubt in these cases but when they go after those for simply camming them in these public situations, its time to get suspicious.

I really have absolutely no factual knowledge whatsoever upon which I can determine why the cops chased him. It would therefore be pure conjecture for me to assume they were chasing him for “simply camming them in these public situations.” I make ever attempt to avoid getting suspicious over conjectures.

Again, and repeating, I respect your right to have your own opinion.
