Somebody correct me if I'm wrong,but that ain't exactly a career path for hot shots on the way up. Seems to me it's where they park slackers when they don't know what else to do with them.
This is just a guess, but he may have gone into that branch so he and his fellow West Point graduate wife could serve together in an accommodating fashion.

Any WP graduate that doesn't pick a combat arms branch isn't serious about a career.
