Took place back when Dole was the nominee.
Congress didn't pass the trade bill. Congress gave Obama the authority to negotiate freely and put a trade bill together. Once the trade bill is assembled, Congress can vote up or down on it. "Details to the bill remain classified." Well, more like "unknown". It's not done. Negotiations continue.
And you see no problem with Republicans working hand in hand with Obama on this?
This "fast track authority" has been going on since 1974. Bush got it from Congress in 2002. Everyone acts as though this is the first time this has ever happened. If Obama negotiates a bad trade deal, Republicans have the majority in both houses to vote against it.
Maybe they have the majority, but they don't have the balls to do anything except passively do what Obama tells them to do.
Geez Louise. Maybe we should wait until we have a document to look at, huh?
By giving Fast Track authority, the Congress changes the rules from having to have 60 votes in the Senate to pass an agreement, to 51. This gives away the majority to the Democrats. I, and many others would have no problem with "Free" trade, except it is ALWAYS a giving away of the farm on our side. We lose jobs, our trade deficit goes up and we get one step closer to irrelevance as a nation.
It makes it easier for the Democrats to defeat. And on this one, they're on your side. You're complaining?
I bet you thought NAFTA was great too.
Fast track authority has nothing to do with whether or not I liked NAFTA. If Congress doesn't like Obama's trade bill they can veto it.
Come and defend your Republicans. You already know what I think.
