Title: Feds Spent $100 Billion on Food Assistance Last Year

109,930,090 Americans participated in overlapping programs

The federal government spent $100 billion providing food assistance to Americans last year, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

The lion’s share of spending comes from the food stamp program, which gave benefits to an average 46 million Americans in 2014, at a cost of $74.6 billion, according to a testimonyfrom the GAO’s Director of Education, Workforce, and Income Security Kay E. Brown before the House Subcommittee on Nutrition Wednesday.

The national school lunch program was second, costing $11.3 billion, followed by the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) at $7.1 billion.

Other spending included $1.9 billion for nutrition assistance for Puerto Rico, and $10.7 million for the “Special Milk Program.”

Brown said there is a potential for overlap and “inefficient use of federal funds” due to the government’s “complex network of 18 food assistance programs, administered by three federal agencies,” which are unsure how effective the programs are.

“In 2010, research GAO reviewed suggested that participation in seven of these programs was associated with positive outcomes, such as improving nutrition among low-income households,” Brown said. “Little was known about the effectiveness of the remaining 11.”

The GAO provided a list of the 18 federal programs, which together served a total 109.9 million Americans in 2014. The list only provides the total number of participants for each program, and does not take into account the potential for individuals to participate in more than one program.

Brown said the GAO urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) address potential overlaps in their programs. The USDA commissioned a study on redundant programs in 2013, and then “decided to study the impact of participation in multiple food assistance programs on the nutritional status of participants.”

“While such a study will provide important information, it does not address GAO’s recommendation,” Brown said. “GAO continues to believe that further action is needed.”

And yet the food stamp recipients sell their cards for 50 cents on the dollar.

But... But... that's how most of them pay for their weed and opiates.

How much weed and opiates you can buy for weed $2.22 (50% of $4.44)? And what do they eat?

Industrial, urban society in a free-trade world with nearly-free migrations of people will always have substantial excess populations that cannot get a job sufficient to support their needs within a local area or the necessary time frame to avoid extreme hardship.

Therefore, permanent food assistance is required to ensure that nobody lapses into malnutrition or starvation. The food provided on such programs should be nutritionally complete and wholesome and agreeable, if plain and unadorned. Children should be able to survive and thrive on it. It should not be threadbare prison rations, but sufficient to maintain permanent robust health.

However, it should be plain peasant food: healthy, wholesome and complete, but not FANCY.

There is nothing wrong with different economic classes. Capitalism thrives on the importance of all types of jobs. We need toilet makers, scrubbers and sellers... or we can't shit.

We are not equal liberal. We never were. We shouldn't try to treat people as equals... just FAIRLY based on their abilities.

He may have a lettuce farm, I don't know.

The offer was not imaginary, it was a valid offer sincerely made at the time.

Here's the transcript:

John McCain: "I don't think I need to tell you that there are jobs that Americans will not do. I don't think I have to tell you that there are ... the backbone of our economy...

Audience members: "Pay them the right wages."

John McCain: "You know I've heard that statement before. Now, my friends, I'll offer anybody here fifty dollars an hour if you'll go pick lettuce in Yuma this season and pick for the whole season. So, ok, sign up! Ok, when you sign up, you sign up, and you'll be there for the whole season, the whole season, ok, not just one day. Because you can't do it, my friend."

Just sent him an e-mail through his Senate website:

Dear Senator McCain,

During your address to the Building and Construction Trades Department Conference, you publicly offered to pay $50 an hour for people willing to come to Yuma, Arizona for the summer to pick lettuce.

I would like to sign up for this position. I am an educated, professional, American citizen, and would really enjoy the extra money I could earn if I switched to a career picking lettuce.

You did not provide any contact information during your address. I understand that you don't use e-mail or the internet, so I must assume that applicants must submit their resumes to you via the U.S. Mail. If so, which address should I send it to? I've tried finding your home address, but I've come across seven different home addresses and I'm unsure which would be appropriate.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to a new career in the lucrative lettuce industry.

Sincerely, Papalmonkey

Picking lettuce is hardly a "shit job." I did it in high school during the summer when I *couldn't drive a car. You might get a little dirty, but it isn't hard work.

I'd pick lettuce for 100k a year. Fresh air, sunshine, nice view. Beats the hell out of working in a cubicle staring at a screen all day and getting paid a third of that.

Omikron 146 points 6 years ago

Don't belittle the difficulty of the job. I grew up in a farming community, and have picked several types of farm crops. Believe me it is not fucking easy.

Still for 50 dollars an hour I'd pick pimples of McCain's ass for 10 hours a day.

Don't belittle the difficulty of the job. I grew up in a dermatology community, and have picked several types of ass pimples. Believe me it's not fucking easy.

Still for 50 dollars an hour I'd pick lettuce off of McCain's farm for ten hours a day.

mingdamirthless 18 points 6 years ago

I also grew up on a farm, and picked squash, tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, WATERMELONS, etc.

I agree, it can be extremely hot and tiring work. But let's be honest, we worked for 5 dollars an hour. For $50 an hour, we could've hired up to an including some lawyers in town to pick our crops.

The fact of the matter is, McCain is out of touch with how hard some people work for a living in this country.

"Then why are there still poor in America if you are such good Christians?"

Because "the poor" are defined as some bottom percentage of the population. Meaning "the poor" will always exist.

But 'the poor" in the US look like "the rich" in the truly poor countres.

But 'the poor" in the US look like "the rich" in the truly poor countres.

Poverty is relative and objective at the same time.

In most of America owning a car is a necessity - to be able to commute to work, shopping, doctor etc ... In many countries it is not necessary. In a warm tropical country having shoes or heating is not a necessity - in northern Russia it is. Eskimo (until recently at least) has to have hunting tools and kayak. Etc, etc ...

Poor are those who can barely make ends meet while destitute are those who cannot do it without assistance or going into debt.

Real middle class are those who have sufficient disposable income and possessions enabling them to have free time, be active in culture, society or politics, and invest/save.

The rich are those who do not need to have income and can hire others.

Because "the poor" are defined as some bottom percentage of the population.

This is being done for accounting convenience. Percentage is defined to reflect real definitions presented above.

To survive as a society, we need the roads maintained, our borders defended, the structure fires extinguished and the criminals apprehended... But we don't need to feed the lazy able bodied so they generationally spawn more dependent turds. We can survive without them.

Our forefathers designed limited government and taxes to fund it... but their design didn't contain one penny for the lazy... so you pay for it. Don't ask me to.

Btw, officers, teachers, military and firefighters WORK AND EARN their pay checks... leaches don't "earn" or contribute to social services... they just leach and spawn more leaches.

And in a representative republic, the people are the state.

And that's what it really boils down to... the majority of the sheep don't mind one bit what pisses Deckard off. That's the "state". These "crooked" politicians are providing the sheep with what they DEMAND... food, shelter and the illusion of SAFETY.

Now, I don't like the direction my sheeple peers have taken this country... but our society isn't all about me. lol

Every society gets the kind of criminal it deserves. What is equally true is that every community gets the kind of law enforcement it insists on. Robert Kennedy
