  • Lonnie James Pebley, 43, of Castle Rock, Colorado, sentenced on Friday
  • Fired almost 70 shots at police and sheriff's deputies on July 4th in 2012
  • Convicted of 46 charges including assault and endangerment in February
  • Judge ruled sentence should be served consecutively and not concurrently

A Colorado man who fired nearly 70 bullets from an AK-47 at police officers and sheriff's deputies on Independence Day in 2012 was sentenced to 736 years in prison by a judge on Friday.

Lonnie James Pebley, 43, opened fire on 27 Castle Rock police officers and Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies from his home in Castle Rock during one of biggest shootouts in county history.

He fired more than 70 times but did not hit any of the officers.

Officers fired only two shots in response because they feared children were in the house.

A SWAT team was eventually called in and Pebley was arrested at another location after a seven-hour search, the Denver Channel reported.

Neighbor Marvin Shipley saw the shootout.

He said: 'My wife heard someone say, "Don't shoot the dogs."

'I think they shot the dogs and it really picked up at that point.

'Pretty soon we had bullets whizzing over the roof of the house and it went on for quite a while.

'There must have been 50 to 60 gunshots.'

Pebley's case went to trial earlier this year and he was found guilty of 46 criminal charges in February.

The charges Pebley was convicted of include 15 counts of attempted first-degree murder, 12 counts of first-degree assault, 17 counts of reckless endangerment, one count of criminal mischief and one count of being reckless with a gun.

Sheriff Tony Spurlock said: 'Lonnie Pebley is a calculating, dangerous criminal who terrorized his neighborhood, shot at police officers and deputies who are sworn to protect him and showed no remorse or value for human life.

'Pebley is a callous human being, responsible for his actions and with today's sentence handed down by the court, will no longer walk among law-abiding citizens.'

Judge Paul King said the sentences for each count should be served consecutively and not concurrently during sentencing.

Castle Rock Police Department Chief Jack Cauley said: 'In the summer of 2012 Lonnie Pebley attempted to murder our police officers.

'Today, we witnessed justice served.

'This convicted felon will now be held accountable for his actions and will no longer pose a threat to our community, neighbors, families and friends.'

736 years in prison for man

Yeah but with good behavior, he can get that cut in half.

This guy wasn't trying to hit anyone. Wait until the citizens start getting serious.

Whew, that's good.

If he had hit someone, then he may have gotten double the time and could have been sentenced to 1472 years.

"He fired more than 70 times but did not hit any of the officers ... sentenced to 736 years in prison."

Yet some gangbanger kills an 11-year-old child in a drive-by, gets 10 years, and is back on the street in 5.

No reason was given for the initial encounter.

No reason was given for the initial encounter.

Police had initially responded to reports of a "suspicious person" hiding in the bushes outside the home.

Well, maybe he fired because he was in fear for his life. It's okay when the cops do it. If they shot his dogs, then there's a legit basis for it.

Apparently, he shot at the people who killed his dogs because they killed his dogs.

No other reason.

The above is why some people should never be allowed near a gun.

Cops consider their dogs to be on par with "officers". Why can't us ordinary people?

I'm not sure he should have been allowed around dogs, either.
