Putin says US helped North Caucasus separatists against Russia in the 2000s Russian president cites intercepted calls as he makes assertion in documentary Bush said he would ‘kick the ass’ of intelligence officers involved, Putin says Associated Press in Moscow Sunday 26 April 2015 10.39 EDT Intercepted calls showed that the US helped separatists in Russia’s North Caucasus in the 2000s, Russian president Vladimir Putin claimed in a new documentary in which he underscored his suspicions of the west. The two-hour documentary, to be aired on the state-owned Rossiya-1 TV channel later on Sunday, is dedicated to Putin’s 15 years in office. It focuses on Putin’s achievements as well as challenges to his rule – which the producers and Putin blame on western interference. Putin was elected Russian president on 26 March 2000, after spending three months as acting president, and was sworn in on 7 May 2000. The documentary shows Putin interviewed at the Kremlin in the dimly lit St Alexander’s Hall. In excerpts released shortly before the film’s broadcast, Putin said Russian intelligence agencies had intercepted calls between the separatists and US intelligence based in Azerbaijan during the early 2000s, proving that Washington was helping the insurgents. He did not specify when the calls took place. Following a disastrous war in the 1990s, Russia fought Islamic insurgents in Chechnya and neighboring regions in the volatile North Caucasus. “They were actually helping them, even with transportation,” Putin said. Putin said he raised the issue with then-US President George W Bush, who promised Putin he would “kick the ass” of the intelligence officers in question. But in the end, Putin said the Russian intelligence agency FSB received a letter from their “American counterparts” who asserted their right to “support all opposition forces in Russia”, including the Islamic separatists in the Caucasus. Putin also expressed his fears that the west wishes Russia harm as he recalled how some world leaders told him they would not mind Russia’s possible disintegration. “My counterparts, a lot of presidents and prime minister told me later on that they had decided for themselves by then that Russia would cease to exist in its current form,” he said, referring to the time period around the second conflict in the Caucasus. “The only question was when it happens and what consequences would be.” The latest poll by the independent Levada agency showed that the approval rating for Putin, whose third term in office ends in 2018, was a whopping 86% in April. Sounds like propaganda to me. Let Putin produce these recordings publicly. Then produce this CIA letter and let us see it. Why won't Putin name these other leaders who told him this?
Sounds like propaganda to me. Americans would not support any insurgents. Especially against Russia.

Sarcasm? You might recall McCain's support for Chechen rebels over the years and his belligerence over Georgia back in 2008. Graham and Lieberman were fully onboard as well. So the neocon element did make its sentiments known. And McCain's main adviser had a strong lobbying relationship with Georgia's puppet president, the notorious Tiesucker. If Putin is going to make these outrageous claims, he should have to produce some evidence and name names. Otherwise, it's a big nothing exercise in typical Russian paranoia.
Russia can't possibly afford to recreate the USSR. Putin has plans but you couldn't give him most of eastern Europe on a platter. They were what dragged the USSR down so much. They're a drain on western Europe as well, mostly on the German economy.
Yes, since Viking conquest created Russia, Russians had constant paranoia againts Mongols, Teutonic knights, Lituanians, Poles, Swedes, French, Germans and others.
Russia works hard to keep some of these historical grudges alive over centuries. Russian suspicion often leads to lost opportunity. Russia has a habit of being out of step with the times. That often predisposes Russia toward conflict.
In each case they were attacked. And in each case they got stronger. Like hammered iron.

Easy to falsify - I gave the list of invasions. You see, Russians tend to be reactive, not proactive - when left alone they stagnate when pushed they mobilize.

A Pole is correct - and Russia being considered "out of step with the times" predisposes the West towards conflict with Russia, not the other way around. Also, back in the day on Freerepublic - way before 9/11 - I posted hundreds of articles on American sympathy towards the Chechen rebels. And you know as well as I do that for the more jihadi types the USA relies on the Saudis and Pakis to help them directly so the USA can pretend it has plausible deniability. Turkey, served as a staging area for the Chechen/Caucusus rebels then as it does now for the Syrian rebels. It pretty much is the same playbook.

I see you're resorting to posting the usual dreck. None of this substantiates Putin's allegations that he has recordings of CIA directing anti-Moscow militants in Georgia or Chechnya. None of this tells us which Western leaders told him they are plotting to dismember Russia. If he has evidence, present it. If he was told directly by Western presidents of a desire to destroy Russia, then name names.
