One of the inherent rights of owning a vehicle is the ability to get on one’s backside — a wrench in one hand and a grease rag in the other, and just tinker to your little heart’s desire. Since the vehicle was invented, it’s been an important facet within the community of gearheads.

General Motors — the same company responsible for 87 deaths related to faulty ignition switches, FYI — wants to take that right away from you citing safety and security issues. Along with a few other big names.

It’s called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). It’s been around since 2000 and started as anti-Internet piracy legislation. But automakers want to use it to try and make working on your own car illegal. Yes, illegal. The general premise is that unlike cars of the past, today’s vehicles are so advanced and use such a large amount of software and coding in their general makeup, altering said code could be dangerous and possibly even malicious.

Listing the vehicle as a “mobile computing device,” the law would hypothetically protect automakers from pesky owners looking to alter any sort of technology in the vehicle that relates to the onboard computer. Flashing your ECU would be a big no no, which could also lead to all sorts of problems for aftermarket shops.

What GM, and even tractor companies like John Deere, argues is that you, as an owner, don’t actually own your car. Rather, you’re sort of just borrowing it for an extended amount of time and paying for the rights to use the technology. If it sounds ridiculous— it is. But it gets even more ludicrous.

According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, John Deere argued that “letting people modify car computer systems will result in them pirating music through the on-board entertainment system.”

That’s right— pirating music. Through a tractor.

DMCA does give a little bit of leeway, though. While the act could hypothetically lock customers out of key safety features, it would still allow owners the ability to repair other areas of the vehicle’s onboard computer as they see fit. It’s a slim compromise, but one that may be more closely based in reality.

As it currently sits, there are 13 (!) large automakers on the list supporting the DMCA. Want to know who they are? Of course you do:

General Motors Company
BMW Group
FCA US LLC
Ford Motor Company
Jaguar Land Rover
Mazda
Mercedes-Benz USA
Mitsubishi Motors
Porsche
Toyota
Volkswagen Group of America
Volvo Cars North America

Ironically, one of the brands that relies most on technology in its vehicles — Tesla Motors — in not in support of DMCA. While other American companies like GM, Ford and Chrysler all agree that working on your own vehicle should be punishable by law.

Funny how three brands that pride themselves on American ingenuity don’t want customers to work on their cars.

That pretty much died in the 1980's.

About all you can do to a car at home anymore is change a flat tire,unless you want to spend 20 grand or so on electronic test equipment and specialized tools.

I have been told it now costs right at $1,000 to replace the water pump on my turbo diesel GMC pu. They pretty much have to pull the whole front clip off to even get at it.

If the 6-speed Allison auto trans takes a dump,I'm looking at between 5 and 6 grand to get it rebuilt. Even the lock in and out torque convertor is controlled by sensors and a dedicated computer.

The days of doing repairs along the road or in your driveway are already over.

And I have worse news for you. It's going to get worse,thanks to the drones that are enviro-Nazi's. I am guessing that within another 15-20 years there will be federal environmental laws passed requiring you to take your car to a dealership that sells that brand to get ANY repairs done to it. Practically everything will be plug-in modules and mechanics will be a thing of the past along with owners that liked to spin wrenches. You will take your car in,have it plugged into the Big Mama Ford/GM/Whatever computer at the dealership,and it will not only tell the parts replacer what part to replace,it will even order it for him and print out the bill.

IF we are lucky,people that like antique cars will still be allowed to drive them if they convert over to propane. Other than that,they will strictly be museum pieces or available to the wealthy like Goober Gore,who swaps pollution credits.

Mama's,don't let your babies grow up to be mechanics.

BTW,I am involved right now in bringing a 1951 Ford 6 cylinder business coupe back to life that had been sitting in a barn for 20+ years. Been going nuts trying to chase down NOS and repo parts. Trying to keep it as original as possible.

It's more about population control and power than it is wealth these days.

In the near future America will be like the USSR was. Peasants that want cars will have to apply for permission to buy one from the collective they work for,and only the best little sheeple will be granted permission. That helps keep them in line.

The basic idea is you don't buy and own a vehicle, you just rent it from GM at an exhorbitant price in tribute to their intellectual creativity and if it falls apart due to faulty engineering you're just out of luck.

I still do most of my own work although it can be a pain in the ass at times. Between a Dealer Service Manual and a good Fluke 77 or better meter you can do most of the sensor/electrical troubleshooting yourself.

I recently decided to change the struts on the wife's car (front wheel drive 3.5L double overhead cam) and when I jacked up the drivers front and took off the wheel guess what little tidbit greeted me, the end of the sway bar was sheared clean off. The book says I have to drop the subframe under the engine down about 4 inches to get the bar out. But I think I can pull it out the drivers side once I remove the strut and let the control arm down. Anyway I will find out this weekend if it's gonna be easy or a pain in my ass and back. If you haven't already found out working on FWDs can be a royal pain in the ass, but can't get the wife to drive a truck full time like I do... :(

Oh BTW I order most of my parts from Rock Auto if time isn't of the essence cause most of the time they are much cheaper and good quality. Sway bar locally was right between $100-110 depending on who you talked to and $89 (shipping included) from Rock Auto delivered right to my side door, can't beat that. Unwrapped it last night and it's much heavier and better design than the original one, is even stenciled to tell you which end is which. It came with mounts, bolts and end links.

I would imagine you already know about them but some folks don't so that's why I mentioned them.

Oh well off to work have a crane job to do, am installing a new 25ton rooftop A/C unit today.

Rock Auto has good prices for good quality parts.

So does Oreilly Auto Parts and your local NAPA store. I just bought a set of front brake shoes for my 51 from Napa,and they had the same price as Rock Auto and I didn't have to wait.

Well the sway bar swap went pretty smooth it came right out the side like I envisioned, pushed the lower control arm up as far as it would go instead of lowering it. The hardest part was getting the bolts out of the sway bar bushings, I couldn't get a socket on the back bolt drivers side so had to back it out (and put it back in) with a box end 15MM wrench 1 flat at a time.

After I got it centered and all lined up then it was time to install the new strut, this is where things went to schitt. Opened the box and inside was a used strut so I thought ok grabbed the wrong box. Opened the other box and inside of it was "another used strut"... PHUCK!!! (I had only opened the one box when I got the struts so that's why I didn't notice it before). So had to go online Sunday and fill out a "phucked up part" return and FedExed it back to them yesterday. So needless to say the front end won't be done until this weekend, (maybe) so I had to put the old strut back in just so I can move the car around if needed. Opened the boxes for the back struts and they were alright, ccooooll..

So my guess is someone ripped them off by sending a used strut back to them for a refund, they never opened the box thinking it was a new part and then shipped it out to me. Boy are they gonna be pissed over this they're about $110 per unit. Also makes me wonder if they aren't gonna try and say I'm ripping them off, stay tuned for further developments. (Still haven't received an e-mail/phone call from them about that part).

My best GUESS is they just make a notation beside your name or customer number,and then start to pay attention to your account if it keeps happening.

I just sent back a new Gabriel front shock to Amazon because it arrived in a open box and the mounting cushions and dished washers were missing. They sent me a replacement right away,and I'm waiting for the next time the UPS guy makes a delivery to my house to send the old one back. I think this is probably the 3rd or 4th time I have done this,but I have literally bought hundreds of items from Amazon with no problems,so I have no problems with them.

BTW,Amazon is a great place to buy auto parts. When I was doing the brakes on my 39 IHC pu,the cheapest I could find NOS wheel cylinders (mine were too pitted to rebuild) was 90 bucks a pair,and since they had been sitting on a shelf somewhere since the 1940's,they would need rebuild kits for the rubber parts.

Pulled the parts numbers off the old wheel cylinders,went to Amazon and did a search,and came up with brand new Wagner wheel cylinders for less than $5 each,with free 2 day delivery because I am a Amazon Prime member. I bought the brake hoses from Amazon for a great price,too.
