No charges will be filed against a Chicago Uber driver who used his licensed concealed weapon to shoot a gunman who opened fire on a crowd of pedestrians Friday night, authorities said. The 47-year-old driver had a concealed-carry permit and a firearm owner’s identification card, and he acted in the defense of himself and others, Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn said in court Sunday, the Chicago Tribune reported. The Uber driver was reportedly stopped at Logan Square around 11:50 p.m. when 22-year-old Everardo Custodio allegedly began firing into a crowd of pedestrians in front of the Uber vehicle, Mr. Quinn said. The driver then pulled out his handgun and fired six shots at Mr. Custodio, striking him several times, the Tribune reported. Mr. Custodio suffered wounds to his shin, knee and lower back and was still in Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center on Sunday. He was charged with aggravated assault and unlawful use of a weapon and was denied bond during the Sunday court hearing, the Tribune reported. Uber spokeswoman Jen Mullin had no comment on the driver’s actions other than to say the company requires all its drivers to abide by local, state and federal gun laws, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
