Deputies from Alachua County Sheriff’s Department are using armored vehicles to conduct routine traffic stops It is hard to imagine that this surreal story does not originate in a nation run by a violent warlord (or maybe it does), but it actually comes from Florida, where Lucas Jewell, a resident of Gainesville noticed local members of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Department were riding through town in a tank-like armored vehicle that appears to be a Lanco BearCat, an armored personnel carrier intended for military use. As Mr. Jewell believes that this is a gross abuse of taxpayers’ dollars and is opposed to the militarization of police, he found this display of military hardware on public roads offensive and showed the individuals in riding in the tank his middle finger and proceeded to continue on his journey. The deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Department had other plans; they followed Mr. Jewell closely for several blocks and then decided it to pull him over in an attempt to punish and intimidate him. What appears to be paramilitary group of individuals exited the armored vehicle and immediately proceeded to assault Mr. Jewell, accuse him that he was receiving oral sex from his girlfriend and his middle finger gesture constituted an “improper hand signal” in violation of Florida traffic law. The suggestion that a middle finger raised in the air was intended to be a traffic hand gesture is ludicrous, but it did not stop these cops from attempting to bully Jewell into submission. This unidentified member of ACSD did not want to be photographed because “there are weapons involved.” The video below was provided to TruthVoice by Mr. Jewell and it illustrates the level of militarization that local police forces are reaching, including patrolling U.S. streets and using military vehicles to enforce minor traffic violations or punish peaceful citizens for protected speech. "Tank-like"? What makes it like a tank? Is it the 120mm main gun along with the .50 heavy machine gun? The tank tracks? The turret on top? Looks more like a Brink's armored car to me.
Looks more like a Brink's armored car to me. Can we split the difference and say, "armored vehicle"? (that just happened to be loaded with paramilitary individuals who then courageously assaulted the citizen.) Bit of over-kill, Misterwhite? Or appropriate force given the situation? Or in your opinion should an armored division and air support have been called in....for this dangerous situation? (giving a middle finger gesture aka, “improper hand signal” in bogus violation of Florida traffic law.)
I'm getting the feeling local police forces are being ordered to develop a separate dept that they're benignly referring to as "SWAT"....but just need the practice to justify the new dept and gubt-issued armor, hollow point rounds, and military costumes and equipment.

Were they supposed to go back to the police station, get a patrol car, then return to pull the guy over? Does this idiot think he should be allowed to flip the bird -- essentially saying "F**k You" -- to the police without repercussions? As soon as I got to that part of the story I stopped reading. Just one more case of the cops minding their own business and some citizen decides to get cute. And afterwards it's the cop's fault. Yawn.
Can we both agree it's neither a tank nor tank-like? And agree that the author of the article is either showing his ignorance or his bias in saying so? And that either the author's ignorance or his bias is a good reason to disbelieve the entire article?
It's called expressing one's First Amendment right to free speech, which has been upheld by the courts. You can look it up.
If the speech is designed specifically to incite violence, then it is not protected.
Officers should display a thicker skin and a higher degree of tolerance than the idiot public. Any good, decently trained officer with common sense would just look past someone flipping them off. I always told my subordinates NOT TO TAKE THINGS PERSONAL.... it will only cause an officer to make poor decisions. The middle finger isn't inciting violence... it's promoting ignorance. People should be allowed to be ignorant as long as they aren't breaking laws.

There is no indication that it was done to incite violence. Seems to me that the middle finger is used to express disdain and ridicule.

Oh, puh-leeze! You have the cojones to insult those who defend cops, yet look at you defending this asshole. "He didn't give the finger (signifying "F**k you!) to the cops to incite violence. Oh, no, misterwhite. It was simply to express disdain." Right. Most people frown to express disdain but not this guy. He gets in your face and tells you to go f**k yourself. And sees nothing wrong with that behavior! Worse, neither do you!
As I stated previously, the courts have ruled that "giving the finger" (yes, even to cops) is protected speech. If he really wanted to incite violence, he would have thrown a rock at them. It's really ironic that what you are doing is giving the finger to the First Amendment.
There are those who use the first amendment to protect a political statement and there are those who hide behind the first amendment to protect themselves from being held responsible for their stupid behavior. I'm putting you and this bozo in the latter group.

Fortunately, a crowd started to gather and take pictures which prompted Mr. Jewell to start chanting, “Tell me what a police state looks like? This is what a police state looks like!” After this the cops gave him a warning for an “improper hand signal” and let him go.
