As more than a dozen possible 2016 Republican presidential hopefuls take the stage to address the National Rifle Association’s Leadership Forum on Friday, one name will notably be missing from the lineup: Sen. Rand Paul.

Mr. Paul, a strong gun rights advocate who formally announced his bid for the presidency this week, has not received any formal endorsements or money from the nation’s largest and most politically potent gun lobby despite his “A” voting record rating from the NRA.

“We did not extend an invitation to Sen. Rand Paul, and he didn’t request to be invited,” said NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker, blaming the packed lineup and scheduling restraints for Mr. Paul’s absence. Mr. Paul and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are two of the only top-tier GOP 2016 hopefuls not speaking at the NRA function. ...

Rand Paul is too pro-Second Amendment for the NRA gun grabbers.

Rand Paul: As Pro-Second Amendment as They Come, Cast Out by NRA

Internal gun rights movement politics keep NRA away from Rand Paul.

Daily Beast explores some arcane, to non-insiders, gun rights movement politics to explain why the National Rifle Association (NRA) is being mean to a candidate who is as pro-Second Amendment as they come, Rand Paul.

Roughly, in case you didn't know, to many in that world, the NRA are the squishy equivocators of gun rights, and Paul is affiliated with some more hardcore ones in perceived war with the NRA.

Thus, the NRA snubbed him by not inviting him to a conference they are throwing tomorrow to which other candidates have been invited.

Details from Olivia Nuzzi at the Beast:

Paul has an A-rating from the NRA, but the objective grading of his gun-rights credentials has little to do with the politics of the pro-gun lobby, wherein his involvement with extremist groups tied to his father, former congressman and libertarian-icon Ron Paul, has not won him many friends.

“Sometimes the NRA doesn’t like it when people are bigger defenders of the issue than they are,” the source suggested. “They also don’t like it that he helps other, stronger groups like the Gun Owners of America and the National Association for Gun Rights.”

Rand Paul's response, reported by David Weigel at Bloomberg:

"The interesting thing is that there's probably no greater advocate for the Second Amendment in Congress than myself," Paul said today. "To not be invited, probably, will serve more to cast aspersions on their group than it would on me. Because my record's pretty clear. It probably looks a little bit petty for them not to invite a major candidate because I raised money for other Second Amendment groups."

My book Gun Control on Trial told the story of how obstructionist the NRA was about the Heller case that established a firm Court-recognized right to personal ownership of commonly used weapons for self-defense in the home.

Fing lobby groups - you can be pro guns but if you don't kiss a lobby groups ass your toast? Lobby groups for all causes left and right are really screwing the country up.

Boom.

Rand, like Ron, pitches his tent with the GOA. And NRA is petty, given their many unnecessary compromises over the decades.

I'm military retired but would not claim I am a shooting competition expert.

I just so happen to have a co-worker who is a big gun nut (meaning that in a good way) and IS a competitive shooter. I showed him the Rand Paul pictures and he liked the form on the rifles but the pistol form needs work in my buddies' not so humble opinion:)

The NRA is a "for profit" corporation that is in the public relations business in order to get tax-free contributions as well as government grant money funneled to the leadership. Their worse nightmare come true would be the elimination of un-Constitutional gun laws.

The only time they ever "get religion" is when membership numbers and contributions stop rolling in. THEN they get serious about defending the Second Amendment.

Temporarily,of course. Their next step is to get up with some anti-gun group and arrange for a compromise gun control law to get passed so they can go back and beg for funds again.

To me, it is amazing that the NRA has Wayne driving the bus giving away free basic NRA memberships (should cost about 35 bucks/year) while he scams an official salary of about $200,000/yr.

The applicable illustration is, Wayne uses the logic of a automobile salesman: lose money on every sale but make the profit up based on total volume of sales.

The numbers of and about NRA membership don't mean diddly-squat, anymore.

The NRA and Al Sharpton have the exact same business model.

The most amazing thing to me is how he managed to take over complete control of the NRA,and basically got away with it without much protest.

He even had that senile fool Heston run as his proxy president once when it looked like he was on the verge of being dumped, and stayed behind the curtain and pulled Heston's strings.

Has there ever been a national organization of such long-standing with such a blind and deaf membership?

I would have quit being a member years ago but I am a paid-up Life Member, and wanted to cost them by having them send me a magazine each month. Now they no longer even do that. AFAIK,the American Rifleman is history. I know I quit getting mine a few years ago.

LaPierre has been nothing but a disaster.

American Rifleman is still a cool magazine with exception of Wayne's Korner. I still receive my monthly issue and have continuously for over a quarter of a century. Then again, I still donate a few bucks each year just because of the good ol' days.

"Lifetime Benefactor" for myself, then again I wonder where all that money really goes because the onslaught of inalienable rights and specifically, the right to keep and bear arms is nearly non-existent in America.

To keep LaPierre and his minnions living the good life.

Which I would be fine with if they fought for and protected the 2nd Amendment.

EVERY gun law since the Machine Gun Act of 1934 has been written and passed with the help and approval of the NRA.

I resigned my membership back in the early 70's over all the letters to the editor of American Rifleman complaining about the NRA spending time and money to "help people carry concealed weapons in public, when we all know that only criminals need to carry guns",and the constant bitching about the NRA posting articles about how to accuracize "ugly rifles (AR-15's)that have no place in citizens homes." Even wrote them a letter telling them why I was quitting.

Didn't join again until they got right with the Constitution and the fleeing members got them fired up to repeal some gun laws. That was when I made the mistake of becoming a Life Member.

I really should have known better. Nobody's fault but my own.
