WASHINGTON — Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is poised to officially join the 2016 presidential race today, hoping to remake the Republican Party with a mix of libertarian and conservative ideals that can attract minorities and young people.

Paul is scheduled to declare his candidacy at a rally in Louisville, Ky. Paul, 52, joins Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in a race that has attracted the interest of more than a dozen potential GOP candidates. He is also simultaneously running for re-election to his Senate seat.

"... hoping to remake the Republican Party with a mix of libertarian and conservative ideals that can attract minorities and young people..."

So....a middle aged white guy from Kentucky is the right person to attract minorities and young people.....

We'll see where this goes....

He won't attract the bulk of the traditional Republican electorate ,and he won't be able to cobble a new coaliton. His father was never able to go beyond a fringe candidate and that will be the fate of his 'legacy candidate ' son.

As he has tried to put distance between himself and his old man ,he has weakened his support from his own base . Last election he supported Mitch McConnell in a primary against a tea party candidate . That may have been a pragmatic move that serves his position as a Senator; but it proved that he is willing to compromise his principles when it's expedient .

What he can do well and clearly spell out the issues about Obamacare and to lay out an alternative . But I do not trust his foreign policy instincts . Since he plans to announce with USS Yorktown as a backdrop shows that he thinks he's vulnerable on the issue too.

Don't kid yourself, Rand is 10x the retail political candidate that Ron ever was. Even when he was just a surrogate speaker for his dad in 2008 and 2012, he really moved the crowds.

That is why Fox News just happens to drag out Karl Rove to rain on his parade today. They also just happened to feature a segment with Pete Hegseth attacking Rand. Sheer coincidence. And a 501c PAC is running that new ad attacking Rand with nuke images, like LBJ's old Daisy commercial.

They never bothered to do anything like that to damage Ron Paul. He wasn't ever a threat. Rand is.

Keep in mind that in so many states, indy voters are now the majority. The kind who voted for Obama.

The GOP doesn't seem to realize that they represent an aging and declining set of positions on many issues, from the neocon warmongering in the Mideast to Arab Spring disasters to the War On Drugs and the Patriot Act.

And Rand will face a dozen GOP opponents who will split that neocon vote among themselves, giving Rand a corner on the realist foreign policy positions.

Rand also has potential to bring in young people and minorities in a way that no other GOP candidates can.

You might notice that the Left is worried and they're almost as eager to attack Rand Paul because they're afraid of their voters defecting from neocon/Wall Street-loving Hitlery to Rand.

So Rand will pop out of the gate under fire from the neocon Right and the Occupy Left. And that isn't all bad.

I think attacking a program that is generally popular with younger and minority voters is a strategy that will fail to get much traction.....
