We covered the other day how the Nevada court system is going broke because the numbers of tickets written for traffic and parking infractions has been in a steady decline over the last five years. I guess this is how they're attempting to make up for the shortfall in revenue.

8 News Now reports:

LAS VEGAS -- The Nevada Highway Patrol has a campaign to crackdown on distracted drivers, but how far is too far when it comes to cracking the whip? 8 News NOW decided to examine that question after a Las Vegas woman said she received a ticket from a Boulder City police officer for putting on lip balm at a red light.

Stephanie Fragoso said she was cited Wednesday during the statewide crackdown. She said she was at a red light at I-15 and Blue Diamond when it happened.

Fragoso said when she asked the officer why he pulled her over, he told her it was for putting on makeup.

"I told him it was Chapstick,” Fragoso said.

Initially, Fragoso thought the entire thing was a joke, especially since it was April Fools Day, but when she received the citation, she quickly realized that wasn't the case.

“He said 'it could have been anything; you could have been drinking water, shaving your legs',” said Fragoso.

Law enforcement officers say drivers can be ticketed for any distraction that takes their focus away from the road and their hands off the wheel. Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Loy Hixson said this is a city and county ordinance most people don't know about.

“It states that when a person is operating a vehicle they must provide full attention to the driving so that it won't render that action to be unsafe,” Hixson said.
Note, police themselves regularly drive around with highly distracting internal laptops tied to huge monitors, cellphones, and police radios. They regularly hit other people while working on them, yet they're exempt from the distracted driving laws which apply to the rest of us.

This is not about safety, this is about revenue generation. (1 image)

Aside from the silliness of the lip balm ticket, apparently the local PD has put a hit out on drinking water. And exactly how many women (or men) are shaving their legs while driving?

This is a PD hellbent on any and all revenue, not safety.

They are actually agents of government with most, if not all, collected revenue going to feed the growing welfare state. To overlook this point is to miss the larger picture.

This is very true.... and the reason why I retired as fast as I could and loath welfare recipients more than all posters on this forum, combined.

The HP cop obviously was speaking from talking points from a HP meeting. He didn't come up with this enforcement policy on his own.

Probably. It would get pretty old after a while.

The policeman has no wisdom. The lady should take it to court and explain the situation. Hopefully the judge will throw it out and the officer will be embarrassed among his peers.
