Harvey’s most famous broadcast was probably his “If I were the devil” speech, which he first gave in 1965. On its 50th anniversary, it seems oddly prescient of what America has become in the intervening years. The speech, which was about the decline of America through permissiveness and liberalism, sent shockwaves through America when it was first given. “If I were the devil … I mean, if I were the Prince of Darkness, I would, of course, want to engulf the whole earth in darkness,” Harvey began. Paul Harvey did have it. Paul Harvey spent his winters at his home in Arizona. I ran into him one day while he was shopping with his wife. I took the occasion to tell him how much I enjoyed his broadcasts. I though he would simply say thank you and move on. He did not. He surprised me with a handshake and asked my name. He introduced me to his wife and then began a general conversation with me….mostly wanting to know things about me, like he was conducting a personal interview. I should have felt guilty for taking his time, but I could see he was actually enjoying our talk. I finally had to excuse myself, realizing that his wife was standing there smiling and I was taking her time. I always remember Paul Harvey to be the most gracious, considerate and affable person I will ever hope to meet Paul Harvey did have it. How you doing? Thanks for asking.
