Radio legend Paul Harvey was known for his patriotism and his conservative politics, both of which ring just as true over 70 years after he first took to the microphone. Harvey’s most famous broadcast was probably his “If I were the devil” speech, which he first gave in 1965. On its 50th anniversary, it seems oddly prescient of what America has become in the intervening years.
The speech, which was about the decline of America through permissiveness and liberalism, sent shockwaves through America when it was first given.
“If I were the devil … I mean, if I were the Prince of Darkness, I would, of course, want to engulf the whole earth in darkness,” Harvey began.
