It can be distinguished from the striped bass by broken rather than solid horizontal stripes on the body. Hybrid striped bass are considered better suited for culture in ponds than either parent species because they are more resilient to extremes of temperature and to low dissolved oxygen. They became part of aquaculture in the United States in the late 1980s. Most producers purchase the fish young (as fry or fingerlings) and raise them in freshwater ponds. Currently, about 10 million lb (4.5 million kg) are produced annually in the United States. Hybrid striped bass are used both as a gamefish and a food fish. Most ot these fish are produced by fertilizing eggs from white bass with sperm from striped bass; the resulting fish are also called "sunshine bass" or "Cherokee bass". Hybrid striped bass are known for aggressive feeding habits which makes them highly sought-after by anglers. Often schooling by the thousands, these stocked fish surface feed on baitfish such as shad. Often called "breaking", this surface feeding makes the fish visible and easy to catch on a wide array of lures and baits. Popular lures include casting spoons, buck-tail jigs, soft-body plastic fish replicas, and inline spinners. Their quality as a hard-fighting gamefish is closely followed by their delicious firm, white, flaky meat. Many restaurants sell "striped bass" on their menus, but these are farm-raised hybrid striped bass. Origins are from 1970's, when the first hybrids were stocked in Cherokee Lake in Tennessee. They became known as Cherokee bass, but most commonly are called 'hybrid' (Southeast) or 'wiper' (Midwest). They are stocked in dozens of large impoundments to control baitfish populations and provide sport for anglers. Produced in hatcheries, the most common hybridization is the female striped bass Morone saxatilis and the male white bass M. chrysops. This is due to the high number of eggs produced by the female striped bass. This hybrid cross typically produces a faster-growing offspring which attains larger size. The female striped bass is injected with human gonadotropin which stimulates her to lay. Usually, around a dozen male white bass are in the tank when the spawn occurs. Once the eggs are fertilized, the brood fish are removed and the eggs must stay adrift in artificial current for about 48 hours to hatch. Natural hybridization has been occurring for thousands of years between the species, but it is usually the reverse cross which would be male M. saxatilis x female M. chrysops, since the white bass eggs do not require the same degree of flotation to hatch. Their main diet includes bluegill, sunfish, fathead minnows, and black crappie.

Quite a few Texas lakes have stocked them over the years and we used to fish for them during the Spring, Fall and anytime some good heavy rains pass thru. At these particular times the "Hybrids" are chasing baitfish in the upper water column and are easier to pattern and fish for. They like to hunt in packs and will push baitfish up against a bluff, dropoff or point then go in for the kill. Hybrids can get up to 25lbs and pull like a Mack truck. But you can't play them until they calm down cause they will pull until they go belly up, so you have to use oversized tackle and manhandle them somewhat. Which means it's a hell of a lot more dangerous removing treble hooked lures from a "hot" fish vs a tired/calm fish. One of my old fishing buddies can testify to that when he ended up with a treble buried in his finger clear up to the shank, and the other trebles was still in the mouth of a 10lb Hybrid flopping around the deck. (This is where Superglue in your tackle box comes in handy for on the water surgical procedures) :) We used a variety of lures on them but predominately heavy jointed topwater minnows, full size spinnerbaits, rattletraps and spoons. Using the topwater minnows were the funnest cause you could watch the fish react/stalk/slash at your bait while you worked it. We used 5" and 6" Rebel Jointed minnows with 3X #2or4 treble hooks on them. You had to use the heavy plastic or saltwater versions cause they would destroy a wooden one in short order. The largest specimen I have seen was right about 15lbs and it was pulling the front end of the boat around. My buddy on the back was yelling "Hey were are you going the fish are over there, I yelled back "Well tell him cause he's the one driving the boat". I was using a 7'MH rod with 17lb mono and he had the rod bent clear over double and was taking drag. I told my buddy if you want to go after them then get up here and run the trolling motor and I went to the back deck to fight him. :) :) :)...

Me and my Dad used to fish for REAL striped bass off We're talking 30, 40 and 50 pound suckers.
