WASHINGTON (CNN) - Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has jumped to third place in the prospective Republican presidential field since making his bid official last week, according to a new poll.

The survey, released Wednesday by Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, found Cruz surging from 5% support last month to 16% support from Republican primary voters this month.

He now trails only Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who leads the pack with 20% support, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who takes 17%. Cruz was in sixth place in last month's poll.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul both take 10% support, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee tie with 6% each, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie takes 4% and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry has 3% support.

That's a steep drop for Carson, who was polling at 18% support last month, and a drop for Huckabee from 10% last month.

Title: Cruz rockets to third in new meaningless poll

The idea that these polls mean anything at all just shows how ignorant people are.

At this point, a poll only demonstrates cult followings (Cruz, Paul) and brand name recognition (Bush).

The poll certainly means something.

Cruz is getting his name out there and people are receiving his message positiely.

I agree though. Cruz will not finish third. He is shooting for first.

As if the others aren't?

I think Cruz has a cult Tea Party following. And he probably has most of the votes he can get already. Scott Walker has a fair slice of the Tea voters too so if he collapses, Cruz could unify that bloc of voters.

This is similar to Rand Paul who has mostly held on to his dad's following but hasn't added a lot to it.

Both campaigns can only hope to hang on, win a primary or two, and hope that the party elite's nominee (Bush or Rubio or Christie) to stumble badly which would give them their chance at the nomination.

Cruz also has a problem in that his voter demographic definitely skews older. Rand's demo skews toward the under-40 crowd.

Cruz is young though. This could be only the first of many presidential forays for him.

The poll certainly means something.

A new working paper by Neil Malhotra of Stanford's Graduate School of Business, and David Rothschild of Microsoft Research, shows that some voters do, in fact, switch sides in an effort to feel accepted and to be part of a winning team. But the paper also concludes that greater numbers of voters are searching for the "wisdom of crowds" when they evaluate poll results, and that the opinion of experts matters more to them than that of their peers.

Are you suggesting only a "Bush" or a "Clinton" can win? It is a very weird post by yourself, BTW.

You are a fucking idiot. Reports from a government sucking funds freak making the report have much or more to do with issue, nothing to do with voter emoting at the polls.

I like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul and Mike Lee.

But Cruz is probably going nowhere because he has the unfortunate demeanor of a sleazy used car salesman. It's not good,

John Kasich needs to run. He has the credentials to beet Bush.

As always, spuds, you don't "get-it." The issues are about effective and meaningful change about the current system that has failed the American People. The comment, "Continue with your air-headed cheerleading in la la land." is about government usurpation of US citizens of their tax dollars paying suckers (like you) for nothing .... you peeled potatoes in the air force for 20 years and never performed anything other than showing up for a formation to clean latrines.

John Kasich voted for the Assault weapons ban back in the early 90's.

I didn't vote for him for governor the first time.

I might have the second time but I'm not positive.

Since Hillary has it sowed up. The democrats should all vote for Cruz. So she can have an easy victory. Pass that around.

I've mentioned this before. Cruz is not a natural as a retail pol. He comes off as a slick lawyer type. Or a sleazy used car salesman. The difference between the two is Princeton undergrad and top Harvard law school standing with a ticket to clerk for Chief Justice Rehnquist. You recall his youthful passions for extolling the Constitution. For a guy like Cruz, constitutional law is his first love and his mistress.

Some people would say that Cruz is far better suited to sitting on the Supreme Court than playing retail pol in the Senate. Even Cruz's arguments for his positions sound a lot like he's arguing a legal brief.

Most pols who make it in retail politics are really lousy lawyers. Like the Xlintons, Biden, the Obamas, etc. But it's quite rare for a top legal eagle like Cruz to make it in retail politics even though he might hang on for years in the Senate, given the power of incumbency.

Your pic didn't come through but I see it's a Better Call Saul graphic.

When it comes to watching and hearing Cruz, I often will find myself thinking suddenly of someone else. LBJ didn't go to Princeton/Harvard (old money strongholds way back when) like Cruz did but he was bright enough to graduate high school at age 15. LBJ was dangerous because he was so smart. Cunning, like Nixon.
