Title: The epicenter of the 21st-century oil boom acknowledges fracking is linked to earthquakes

The Canadian province that gave birth to the 21st-century oil boom is no longer waiting to determine whether hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, may be responsible for a recent slew of earthquakes.

Alberta’s energy regulator has issued a new set of “traffic light” rules governing fracking in the province in the wake of two major quakes. All oil producers must now show how fracking could impact local faultlines, and put in place a seismicity monitoring and response program.

If a magnitude 4.0 quake occurs within 5 kilometers of the well, all operations must be halted and can’t be restarted without the province’s consent.

“While these seismic events have not impacted public safety, it is our job to take this precautionary step to ensure energy resources in this area are developed in a safe and responsible manner,” Jim Ellis, chief executive officer of the Alberta Energy Regulator, said in a statement according to the Financial Post.

Alberta is best known for its massive tar sands, which are mostly developed through mining and where production began to surge a few years ahead of the better-known boom spots in the U.S. But the province is also home to most of the fracking that occurs in Canada.

In January, quakes of magnitudes 3.8 and 4.4 struck near the town of Fox Creek within days of each other. Alberta’s energy regulator said there was “strong evidence” they resulted from fracking, making it one the largest events ever to be linked to the practice, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Company. The town and the surrounding area had seen almost no seismicity until fracking started there in 2013, according to Norton Rose Fulbright, a law firm that works on energy issues.

The new rules are unique in that they govern fracking itself, and not wastewater injections, which have been more strongly linked to earthquakes in the U.S. In 2011, the state of Oklahoma, where earthquakes have exploded in recent years, put in place “traffic light”-style rules for injection wells. But Gov. Mary Fallin only recently agreed to form a panel to look in general at the state’s increased seismic activity.

Earlier this year, U.S. scientists found evidence that fracking in Ohio was directly responsible for two significant earthquakes that rattled several towns near the state’s border with Pennsylvania.

Wow! A 4.4!!!!

Snicker, have you ever seen the massive casualties involved in gigantic 4.4 earthquake? Oh the humanity!!

Oh, so we should wait until it gets up to 7.0? There is enough fact based concern to do more research and investigation into the potential for fracking to cause geological activity. In this case Willie is doing us a service in posting this article.

The cheap Saudi oil is earthqauke enough for the fracking industry.

So, you actually believe the hysteria?

There is a significant difference between a fault and some ground settling due to pressure changes. But, by all means, be one of those cheering for five dollar a gallon gas until we get the magical choo- choos running.

Am sure you know the only reason Saudi oil is cheap right now is because they are playing hardball with our domestic energy success due in the largest part to fracking.

Fracking is NOT linked to earthquakes,

The current method of disposing of the water used in fracking is indeed a proven cause of earthquakes.

Answer? Dispose of the water in a different way.

Under any rational reading of my post, how do you come up with this idiotic conclusion?

The first sentence contradicts the title.

That is what my comment was about and it is not about the USA and fracking but every country fracking right now also some say it is also about hitting back on Russia and Iran over Syria. Lots of reasons floating around.

No it doesn't.

The first sentence contradicts the title.

No it doesn't.

You liberals can't even comprehenbd the language. Let me try to help you out. This is third grade stuff so try to understand.

When the title says it is acknowledged that fracking leads to earthquakes. That means they are acknowledging it. Admitting it. Understand?

When the first sentence says "is no longer waiting to determine whether hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, may be responsible for a recent slew of earthquakes." Willie that means they aren't going to wit to find out. That isn't acknowledging.

You are just spinning it because that is what liberals do.

That isn't acknowledging.

That isn't "contradicting" either. However, the acknowledgement does occur in subsequent paragraphs, if you are capable of following the logical flow of the entire article.

I said the first sentence contradicted the title. Which it did.

I didn't bother reading further because it already contradicted itself.

If the writer contradicted himself or herself further down the writing. Then that is just more evidence the author is full of it.

That only means that you don't understand the word "contradict."

Yeah Willie. You should be a school teacher. Then you can teach all of your students that acknowledging something and not acknowledging something mean the same thing.

Yeah..... and then I could also give a big, fat, effing "F" to the simple minded 'tards who refused to grasp whatever it was I was trying to teach 'em.
