Orthodox Church suspends priest for openly backing Ukrainian conflict

Miko Morelos|Monday, March 30 2015

The Russian Orthodox Church has placed a priest under suspension for blessing a group of fighters to be deployed to eastern Ukraine by telling them to fight off government troops who he described as "fascist scum."

The priest, identified as Vladimir Zaytsev, had been videotaped on March 12 giving a blessing to about 50 fighters during a send-off ceremony as some of the troops waved flags of the two pro-Russian regions who wanted to break away from Ukraine. "Fight against the fascist scum if needed, and I think it will be necessary," Zaytsev was heard as saying in the video, referring to Ukrainian government forces. "Don't be afraid of anything." During the year-long conflict both sides have accused each other of being fascists.

In a statement, local diocesan authorities said that Zaytsev was suspended until Easter because of his remarks clearly "contradicted the position of the Russian Orthodox Church regarding what is happening in Ukraine." The diocese likewise sought to clarify the purported blessing that the priest gave, explaining that it should not be taken as "blessing for carrying out a fratricidal war," The Moscow Times reported.

Church officials have yet to decide if it should further punish the priest, saying that authorities would decide what to do with Zaytsev, whether to reinstate him to the priesthood or not, after Easter.

To the layperson, this may sound odd but the Orthodox church constrains itself from blessing wars or military operations. It can and does bless troops and troops can fight under holy banners but they can not in any way partake of war as if it is a 'holy war'.

In fact, Orthodox soldiers who kill in war have to make penance and are denied holy communion for a period of time.

Historically, they are a bit antiwar. As they should be.

I notice at the Iran negotiations, Lavrov is lapping up all the collegiality with his western counterparts. Perhaps Russia is hoping to put on a good show, if only for domestic consumption.

/. :

NASA officials today denied they were negotiating a partnership with Russia to build a space station replacement for ISS, as suggested yesterday by the head of Russia's space program. Maybe the misunderstanding comes from NASA head Charles Bolden, who is currently in Russia. Bolden probably said some nice feel-good things to the Russians, things like "We want to keep working together," and "We will support your plans for your future space station." None of this was meant as a commitment, but the Russians might have taken them more seriously than Bolden realized.
The Russkies seem a little eager recently.

Orthodox canon law has maintained, however, the recognition of the spiritual gravity of taking life in war. St Basil the Great recommended that those who kill in war should abstain from taking communion for three years. Soldiers were not sanctioned with nearly the same severity as murderers, but were given time to repair the damage done to their souls by killing through a period of repentance before communing. This canon may never have been applied strictly, and clearly has often been ignored in the practice of the church. Still, it stands as a reminder that war is not unambiguously good; the taking of the life of a fellow human being is a grave matter that threatens to impair one’s relationship with the Lord, the church and one’s neighbours.

The Orthodox Church formed the state. Or would you rather still have your ancestors carrying out human sacrifice before the converted Emperor Constantine put an end to it and formed a system based on Christian beliefs which went on to be the universal norm?
