The epic one-year space mission launched NASA's Scott Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko into orbit aboard a Russian Soyuz space capsule at 3:42 p.m. EDT (1942 GMT) today (March 27) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, where it was early Saturday morning local time. Also flying on the Soyuz is cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, a crewmember who will live and work aboard the orbiting outpost for about six months, the usual length of time people spend on the station. That's good. We really don't have much choice. We share ISS with them and we have not yet developed an alternate to the retired Space Shuttle program. We are dependent on them for transportation of astronauts and supplies to and from ISS .We pay them well for the taxi service. Private space companies are busy designing and testing alternatives. SpaceX has already delivered supplies . But no alternative for human transportation has been developed to the point of approval. So for better or worse ;we fly on Soyuz .
