Title: Canada caps basic cable fee, ends TV 'bundles'

Canada's television regulator on Thursday capped the price for basic cable at Can$25 (US$20) while ordering broadcasters to offer specialty channels a la carte instead of in large, pricey bundles.

The basic package would include local and regional news and information programs, which the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said allow Canadians to participate in the nation's democratic, economic, cultural and social life.

But beyond that, Canadians will be able to pick and pay only for the extra channels they want, starting in 2016 when the new rules take effect.

The change is in reaction to widespread discontent over television packages offered by cable and satellite companies that had become too large and costly.

Many viewers complained about having to pay for "bundles" of channels to access one or two they wanted.

Bundling has been very lucrative for cable companies, with prices for packages rising at more than twice the rate of inflation over the past two decades.

The same is true in the United States, which is also facing a viewer backlash.

But consumers now have much more choice: online movie streaming services such as Netflix or downloading entire seasons of television shows on Apple iTunes or Google Play, skirting broadcasters.

The CRTC said broadcasters must adapt to the new technologies and viewing habits.

The changes are part of an overhaul of the rules governing the way Canadians watch television and the prices they pay, following CRTC hearings last year.

I always thought that giving the consumer the choice of those channels s/he wants is the way to go. I might sign up for 8 or 10 channels. I don't need 100 music channels I never listen to.

Oh, I got rid of my cable/satellite about 3 years ago.

Now I get 30 free antenna channels full of junk. Actually, I see a nice movie or show once in a while. They got rid of the silent local weather channel - one of my favorites.

While I'm ranting, I hate commercials too! Mute button is useful.

I cancelled cable TV months ago and thanks to my Roku 3 box, haven't seen a commercial since then. I can still watch Fox's RedEye for free, with no commercials and if a notable Fox News interview or panel discussion appears there, it's usually available within 24 hours as a show clip, also with no commercials.

That, plus Netflix, provides more than enough tube time and saves me about $90/month.

No more braindead religion channels, no more shopping channels, no more BSNBS, NBS, CBS, ABS, CNNBS or other baggage I never watch added to my bill.

A year ago, I ditched the local phone company and switched to Ooma, cutting my phone bill from $42 to $4.75/month, with nationwide unlimited calling and more features.
Telco used to charge me $10/month for CallerID alone - I couldn't wait to throw those bastards overboard.
