I do like that he didn't pussyfoot around with the usual "exploratory committee".
The party elite and libmedia are dead set against him. And Cruz hasn't developed the kind of charisma and retail political operation that allowed Reagan to overwhelm very similar opposition from the media and the GOP elite back in 1980.

If Cruz gains any traction and finesses his way through the RNC gaunlet, I believe he's a legit threat to the Dems. He's poised, gutsy, knowledgeable, sharp, an excellent debater, and possesses an even temperament. I can see him destroying any opponent in his way -- and especially the Dem opponent.
Witty (or so they think) preemptive "over-before-it-starts" campaign sabotage...
Actually, they concluded that Cruz will likely fare well and could gain a decisive early advantage this way.
Recall 1976 when little-known Jimmuh Carter grabbed the nomination from a half-dozen other Dims who had far better funding and pedigree. It was all over before the establishment Dims could get their act together and start campaigning in IA/NH.
So Cruz's early move, if he has a tycoon or two in his pocket, could serve to help him cut through the entire field and knock off the smaller candidates much sooner, leaving him as the only real alternative to the Bush machine.

Nearly 50 years ago I was a graduate student at the liberal University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The people in the area were very unliberal. Simultaneously, there was a man whose name I have forgotten who started life at the bottom of the pack but built up an empire of 27 very large supermarkets. He was a politically active non-liberal who had a penchant for supporting non-liberal candidates. The people at the University hated him and were determined to put this uneducated Bozo in his place.
There was an important election coming up. The university people, which represented a large crowd, thought this would be an excellent opportunity to put this uneducated idiot in his place, and vote against his candidate. During the campaign he called one candidate every name in the book. The university people told each other, "If that's the guy he's against, we'll vote for him and break the supermarket guy's back." That's what they did and later found out the guy they had voted for was the man the supermarket owner secretly supported and he had stuck it to them once again, much to their infuriation.
I think, as members of the clergy are prone to say, "There is a lesson in that for all of us." I'll never forget it until the day I die.
The leopard does not change his spots. The party elite and the left wing media are determined to place assholes in office, and will use every trick in the book to do it. What does Cruz really stand for in terms of the economy, in terms of our relationship with islam, in term of immigration, in terms of the prevalace of insane life styles?
