A man was bit by a rattlesnake at the Ocean Beach dog beach, the San Diego Fire Department said. The incident happened around 2:25 p.m. on Voltaire Street. The adult man was transported to the UC San Diego Medical Center. The condition of the victim is unknown. Last year, warmer weather at the start of the year resulted in more than triple the number of rattlesnake calls to the County's Department of Animal Services. Since Jan. 1, it had received 78 calls reporting rattlesnakes across San Diego County. That’s more than three times the number of rattlesnake calls during this same time period in 2013, when 24 calls came in. Typically, rattlesnakes wait until spring to come out of hibernation. DAS recommends locals discourage the critters from making themselves at home in yards by getting rid of any possible shelter or food for rattlesnakes, including heaps of trash, wood piles, mice and rats. Also, if you spot a rattlesnake on your property, calmly back away from the critter and leave it alone. Then, call DAS for assistance in safely removing the snake. ...

IMO only shoot a rattle snake IF you have secured and cleared the surrounding area. I remember an article on LP that some sheriff shot at a snake, missed and hit a kid fishing nearby. Better to hack it with a machete or other longer farming/gardening implement. The custom seems to have died out in the Plains states. It was practiced more routinely in the northern plains 60-80 years ago. You still hear of some little town that will organize one, pull in a few hundred snakes but it's only a local news story.

A rattlesnake on Dog Beach. Go figure. I used to live two blocks off Dog Beach in OB. Used to take my dog down there to run around. I'm surprised that there was a rattlesnake THERE. It's a long way from the desert hills, through a lot of city, to get down to Dog Beach.
most of the folks I know don't carry a machete or other longer farming/gardening implement, but they carry gun(s).
My guess would be that some sick minded sucker brought it out of the hills and released it in the park.
Beaches have garbage cans which attract rodents. So the snakes look at is as going on safari:)

Usually I don't think that people would really do something like that. But I've gotta say that Dog Beach really is at the opposite end of San Diego from anything that approaches the desert hills. That snake had a journey of several miles. Then again, there IS the San Diego River that winds its way down to the sea near there. I suppose the snake could have come down the river and then come ashore. That seems more likely than somebody actually releasing a rattlesnake down on a mellow public beach.
I use a 12 ga. Rattlesnake, copperhead, etc. One shot, game over.
