Mohammad Ghazal in Amman February 2, 2015 The high cost of fuel in Jordan and an interest in renewable energy topics have inspired Jordanian engineering student Qais Sabra to design and invent a home solar-powered generator to fuel hydrogen-powered cars. Jordan currently imports around 97% of its annual energy needs, Sabra said, and an invention like his could help reduce fuel consumption dramatically and generate savings for both the government and citizens. Al-Shorfa met with Sabra, a student at the Jordan University of Science and Technology, to speak about the project and its significance... ...Al-Shorfa : What was the genesis of the concept and how did it move into the design stage? Qais Sabra : Since I began my engineering studies I have taken several courses on renewable energy, and have also constantly followed the latest developments in technology. In following the subject, it became apparent that while many auto manufacturing companies have begun producing hydrogen-powered cars, the high cost of establishing large refuelling stations for such cars was a challenge. Hence the genesis of the idea of a home generator that enables anyone who wishes to own this car to refuel it at home at the lowest cost. I began designing the generator and developing the concept last year after presenting the idea to several academics and experts at the university, who provided me with support to design it. Al-Shorfa : How does the generator operate? Sabra : The generator consists, firstly, of a module of photovoltaic cells, which captures the solar energy that is abundant in Jordan, then converts it into electricity to supply the generator with enough power to operate. By incorporating this module we dispense with expensive conventional fuel, and there is no additional cost to generating electricity from the sun. The module has a capacity of 800 to 1,000 watts... Al-Shorfa : What percentage of energy does the generator save? Sabra : The percentage of [energy] savings is very high. A car with a full tank of hydrogen fuel has a range of 600-700 kilometres. Moreover, filling the tank of a medium-sized car with conventional fuel, such as gasoline, costs 30-50 dinars ($42-$71) per filling, while the home hydrogen fuel generator requires only the cost of the water -- the electricity generated from solar power is free... Al-Shorfa : How much does the generator cost? Sabra : The cost of the home generator ranges between 2,000 and 2,500 Jordanian dinars ($2,821-$3,526). But as demand increases and the concept gains wider acceptance the price will drop significantly. The generator has a life span of 25 years and this (translates) into huge savings especially as no additional costs are incurred after installation other than water consumption. Bump for Too Confused. What's wrong, TC- did you miss this entirely? You let a thread go by without sharing your infinite "wisdom"? You're slacking. Or maybe you're pretending to ignore it, because it is counter to what you "know".
It seemed like a fluff nothing story. An engineering student with some diagrams. Has he built anything yet? The solar cell array, the electronics, the hydrogen storage system, etc. I don't see what got invented. I think it's just a Jordanian with a laptop. I do think it's funny that you're so bitter that your crappy non-story was neglected that you had to attack me to get some attention.
Bump for the show me contingent. I got the hardly waits for my handy dandy home hydrogen generator and storage unit. -- But it's always gonna be available 'next year'. -- Next year never comes..
It might. The Japanese are very clever and highly motivated to get off nuclear. It is easy to get cynical when you hear about The World Of Tomorrow for 20 years and it never happens.
People like Too Confused said Hydrogen cars would never arrive- in a few months Toyota will sell a hydrogen car- for less than half of the average cost of Musk-Rat's Tesla (which middle class taxpayers are subsidizing- but that's a whole other argument). So, for Toyota at least, "next year" is here. Honda will sell a Hydrogen car next year- they've had a concept hydrogen car driving around since 1999. And while they've been perfecting their H2 car they have been working on the same thing the Jordanian student has above- a home solar hydrogen station. TORRANCE, Calif, U.S.A., January 27, 2010 - Honda began operation of a next generation solar hydrogen station prototype at the Los Angeles Center of Honda R&D Americas, Inc., intended for ultimate use as a home refueling appliance capable of an overnight refill of fuel cell electric vehicles Designed as a single, integrated unit to fit in the user's garage, Honda's next generation Solar Hydrogen Station reduces the size of the system, while producing enough hydrogen (0.5kg) via an 8-hour overnight fill for daily commuting (10,000 miles per year) for a fuel cell electric vehicle. The previous solar hydrogen station system required both an electrolyzer and a separate compressor unit to create high pressure hydrogen. The compressor was the largest and most expensive component and reduced system efficiency. By creating a new high differential pressure electrolyzer, Honda engineers were able to eliminate the compressor entirely - a world's first for a home use system. This innovation also reduces the size of other key components to make the new station the world's most compact system, while improving system efficiency by more than 25% (value calculated based on simulations) compared to the solar hydrogen station system it replaces... So it's just a useless and ugly way to drive up costs for a hydrogen gas pump. To return to your actual thread's article, please post some pictures of this genius Jordanian student and his "invention". I want to see his solar panels, electrolysis unit, any fuel cells. And exactly which of those components were designed by him and built by him personally (or by his company if he has one). I say he's got nothing more than a laptop and some sketches. And that this thread was a nothing story from beginning to end.
I don't doubt that someday someone will make the breakthrough to produce cheap, usable form of hydrogen out of water. -- I hope it happens tomorrow. --- But I ain't holding me breath..
