Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut “Star Trek,” died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83. His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Mr. Nimoy announced last year that he had the disease, which he attributed to years of smoking, a habit he had given up three decades earlier. He had been hospitalized earlier in the week. I also think that he was a mediocre actor at best, though he was just about perfect in his creatio and presentation of the character Spock. For that alone he deserves recognition.

TV actors in the Fifties and Sixties didn't get fat residuals checks because there were no cable channels to play re-runs so agents didn't bargain for residual rights like they did from the Eighties onward. So making a cheesy pop album was a way to scare up some cash.
I see Shatner will miss the funeral, saying he had committed to a Red Cross charity event. Like the Red Cross is so damned poor. Dumb. He should cancel that event and attend the funeral. Makes Shatner look very bad. The fanbois will be very unhappy that Shatner won't be there. So now Shatner will have to embark on his own Search For Spock's Grave. I'm thinking the Twitterverse might erupt and force Shatner to do the right thing. Screw the Red Cross.
Yeah, I read that this morning. He was at the event in Florida yesterday and couldn't make the funeral today? Baloney. I bet if he was offered $25,000 to attend the funeral he'd manage to charter a flight. The Red Cross couldn't arrange that? They couldn't let him leave early?

C'mon, these guys had to make a living. When the fanbois or mags mention it, they're always a little embarrassed but, hey, what else could they do? Back then, their only pay was the salary with no residuals. Making horrible albums to sell to fanbois of their short-lived sci-fi show was a way to earn cash. Cancelling Star Trek was, quite obviously, the most stupid single decision ever made by a network.
