He dodged a bullet. Former CMC Jesus Galura, onetime top enlisted man on the dock landing ship USS Germantown, could have gone to jail if the prosecution at his court-martial had their way.
The 25-year Navy veteran escaped being busted in rank to PO1 and doing time behind bars.
Galura pleaded guilty in January to charges that he directed a junior chief to lookup home pages of prostitutes in the Philippines on a ship-board computer. He also admitted he attempted to kiss a subordinate female sailor.
FORMER TOP-RANKER WILL NOW RETIRE
The hard-charging, politically correct prosecution wanted to crush him, but the convening authority in his case, CAPT David Harrison, gave Galura a big break when he recommended the ex-CMC be reduced in rank by only one stripe - to senior chief E-8.
Since Galura already planned to put in his papers and retire, the lifelong damage to the once top-ranker is the difference in retirement pay between senior chief and command master chief. That runs into a good many thousands of dollars over the course of a lifetime.
Speaking of big bucks, Galura was fined $10,000. He also received a reprimand for maltreatment of a shipmate.
