The secretary of Homeland Security warned shoppers at Minnesota's iconic Mall of America and similar venues to be vigilant in the wake of new terrorist threats.

"I'm not telling people to not go to the mall," Secretary Jeh Johnson said Sunday on NBC's Meet The Press. "I think that there needs to be an awareness."

Jim Mone, AP Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., heightened security after a video threatening a terrorist attack was released purportedly by a Somali militant group with ties to al-Qaeda. He said, "I'm saying that the public needs to be particularly vigilant." Hours later, department spokeswoman Marsha Catron said in a statement, "We are not aware of any specific, credible plot against the Mall of America or any other domestic commercial shopping center.'' Mall of America heightened security after a video threatening a terror attack was released purportedly by a Somali militant group with ties to al-Qaeda. The group, al-Shabaab, took responsibility for an attack in 2013 at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, that left more than 60 people dead. The video released online focused mostly on the conflict between Kenya and Somalia and the Westgate shopping mall attack. The video calls for similar attacks at the Mall of America and elsewhere. "If just a handful of mujahedin fighters could bring Kenya to a complete standstill for nearly a week, imagine what a dedicated mujahedin in the West could do to the American or Jewish-owned shopping centers across the world," an unidentified man says on the video. "What if such an attack was to occur in the Mall of America in Minnesota? Or the West Edmonton Mall in Canada? Or in London's Oxford Street?" the man says, encouraging supporters to "hurry up, hasten towards heaven and do not hesitate." The Mall of America, among the largest shopping malls in the world, employs more than 12,000 people at more than 500 stores and 50 restaurants. It is the world's busiest mall, bringing in more than 40 million visitors annually. Mall officials issued a statement saying they take any potential threat seriously. "Mall of America has implemented extra security precautions. Some may be noticeable to guests, and others won't be," the statement said. "The safety and security of our guests, employees and tenants remains our top priority." Mall spokeswoman Sarah Schmidt told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that mall traffic and activity appeared normal Sunday. Nancy Cashion and her daughter, Melanie Isabell, told the newspaper they were in the mall 45 minutes before seeing a uniformed security officer. They were unconcerned by the video threat. "There's probably a lot of threats we don't even hear about," Isabell said. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security issued a statement Sunday saying U.S. officials were aware of the call for "Westgate-style" attacks against shopping malls in the USA and elsewhere. The statement said Homeland Security and the FBI have been working closely with state and local authorities in recent months to "prevent and mitigate these types of threats." Al-Shabaab, based in southern Somalia, was declared a terror organization under U.S. law in 2008. The group, which pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda in 2012, took responsibility for an attack Friday targeting government ministers at a Mogadishu hotel. The attack killed 25. In 2013, an al-Shabaab video bragged about successes at recruiting Somalis from Minnesota to fight for their case. Minneapolis has a large Somali community. Sen Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., told WCCO-TV she was confident the mall was well-protected. "We've been in contact with Homeland Security, and I know that everyone is focused on how to best protect the mall," she said. Klobuchar said Minnesota has "been very successful in going after these guys," citing 20 indictments and nine convictions involving al-Shabaab members. Johnson, who made appearances on five Sunday shows, said the video threat reflects the militant effort to encourage supporters to conduct attacks in their homelands. "We're in a new phase now, and I'm afraid that this most recent video release reflects that," Johnson said on ABC's This Week.

Probably a little fear mongering going on... but I worry more about some mentally ill mut bag shooting up a mall. It's the most target rich environment you can find. Way better than a school.

I never step in a mall without having a .45 caliber Glock inside my waistband... and an extra mag.

I suggest every poster on LF take malls seriously. You can step up to the plate and end some scumbags life... or you can cower in a corner and wait to die.

You have that right, privilege and immunity, as a retired cop. Many do not, in states like CA & NY. -- How do you suggest we act? Should we ignore these infringements on our right to carry arms?

Big words, that may lead to some being jailed for 'illegally' carrying. In effect, you're inciting 'illegal acts'.. Correct?

Why would you fund a states government, by paying taxes, that doesn't respect your gun rights and stay there?

You ignore the constitution when you fund those that pass restrictive gun laws. Why do you do that?

Since 6/2014, KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A new gun law in Kansas will go into effect Tuesday that will let owners openly carry guns in public.

It will be legal to openly carry a gun in a holster, in your hand or a rifle on a sling.

Captain Rance Quinn with the Kansas City Kansas Police Department says the sight of a gun is scary for a lot of people. Police said they will still respond to calls about people with guns, but the way they handle it will be much different.

“They may make a consensual interaction with the person, ‘Like hey, how are you doing today. I see that you are exercising your right to bear firearms. Is there anything I can do for you today?’ Or something along those lines,” said Capt. Quinn.

The state already has roughly 90,000 gun owners with permits to carry concealed firearms.

The new law also gives private businesses the right to prohibit guns in their buildings.

Sounds like a good law. If that's your state, congrats. --- GrandIsland

Bad 'law', seeing it prevents those who carry, - while they go about their daily business, from entering certain businesses, on the whim of the business owner who is ostensibly open to the PUBLIC.

If you cater to a private, members only clientele, fine, you get to play games with your members rights. -- But it's not good, constitutional, law.

The only way you'll hurt that state for what they've done to you, is a mass exodus of productive tax payers to another state.

If that's all that's left are welfare, sheep, illegals, criminals and the socialist that pass your insane laws, the state will fold.

You can not make constitutional changes to a state while YOU FEED IT TAX MONEY and civilly disobey laws.

The feds will never allow a state to secede... but they can't stop all gun owners from moving to Arizona. Thus cementing the popular vote for constitutional rights.

Weird comment, seeing that the 'law' applies to you too, when you're in that state. -- We all need to oppose such 'statist laws', and the theory that our States have the power to ignore our inalienable, constitutional, bill of rights.

You're chanting a type of 'state's rights' mantra. If only you had that respect for our Constitution...

Try to keep up. -- We were discussing that Kansas 'law' mentioned at #17.

And I bet you'll go wherever your wife tells you to go..

Contrary to your opinion, my wife and I discussed in great length were we'll retire to. It will be ARIZONA.

We are having a short lay-over in Pa until I can scab over this house and flip it for money. Another few years. Then... ARIZONA.

She knew I'd never have married her unless we were on the same page.

We made a deal. She lived in suck-ass NY for 4 years until I retired, and I'd live in bitter cold Pa for a few years while the grandkids are young. THEN OFF TO ARIZONA.

Why would I fight for your tyrannical state when I didn't have the heart to fight for and stay in my home state, NY?
