WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Marines handed over their remaining weapons to Yemenis at the airport in the capital, Sanaa, on Wednesday before boarding commercial aircraft to leave the country following the closure of the U.S. embassy, the Pentagon said.

The Pentagon said the Marines destroyed heavy weapons in their embassy arsenal, including machine guns, before leaving for the airport but remained armed with smaller weapons until the end to ensure a safe exit from the country.

"The movement from the embassy to the aircraft required armed Marines," Army Colonel Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said at a briefing.

The U.S. embassy closure and the evacuation of embassy personnel came after the Houthi militia group - which overran Sanaa in September - formally took power last week. The Shi'ite Muslim group is stridently anti-American and is backed by Iran.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, estimated that about 100 Marines made up the embassy contingent that left the country.

Asked whether the Marines turned over their weapons to Houthi fighters, Warren said: "It's unclear, frankly. We believe they turned them over to government officials at the airport, prior to boarding the aircraft."

"As everyone knows, weapons are generally not authorized on commercial aircraft," Warren said. He said the Marines were probably carrying handguns and assault rifles until their departure.

Yemen, which borders oil giant Saudi Arabia, had long been at the forefront of the U.S.-led war against al Qaeda. But the long-standing diplomatic alliance between Washington and Sanaa appears to have been suspended with the United States.

France and Britain also closed their embassies on Wednesday due to security fears.

Despite the closure of the U.S. embassy, some American military personnel remain in the country conducting training operations with Yemeni military forces and "retain the capability to conduct counterterrorism operations if required," Warren said.

Still, U.S. officials have privately acknowledged that the political upheaval has undermined their counterterrorism effort, including the collection of intelligence.

There's an update. "Surrender" their weapons was the first title. We now have the below linked.

Some important insight from an old friend of a friend below. The gentlemen served as a Marine in two embassy assignments. He gives good insights:

Start dialogue:

The weapons are part of the Detachment or service station if you will. When I went to Sofia for my first assignment I did not bring a weapon. I was issued one from the post’s inventory. Then, when I went to Munich I did not take my weapon from Sofia; I was issued a new one in Munich. So, they are not the individual assigned weapons of the Marines. They are the weapons for that post and are not to leave that post. They are simply assigned to personnel who report there. When a Marine leaving Yemen reports to his new assignment he will be issued a weapon from the new unit’s armory. He would not be expected to show up with his weapon(s) from Yemen slung over his shoulders and/or in his holster. So, if all the Marines are leaving Yemen and none are reporting, well…

If you want to make the point that they are perfectly good weapons and it is a shame to destroy them, I agree. But from a purely logistical and practical standpoint, destroying all weapons, communications gear (most important…in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it was dismantled and carried out so that not one single wire, circuit, nut or bolt remained), etc. before leaving the post actually makes sense.

Based on the paragraphs above you might think that I’m OK with the disposition of these weapons, but actually I’m not, because there are other considerations beyond process and pragmatism. I am sure that there was classified information and equipment like the aforementioned comm gear that was carried out; items that would be in sealed diplomatic pouches and containers not subject to inspection by any aviation authorities under existing diplomatic norms and standards and this would be easy to control on a flight that was no doubt chartered exclusively for the embassy personnel. The weapons could have been placed in these containers and should have been, because giving up a weapon does truly feel like surrender to a warrior. I’m not sure if this was ordered or if it occurred because political correctness and ass covering have so infected the military that they have simply become the default. Yes, the embassy personnel may have had to lie regarding weapons being part of the cargo, but we’re talking about a bunch of diplomats and spies. They lie all the time. J So, from a logistical and process standpoint I understand why they did this, but there should be other considerations. Honor being first among them.
