Title: Ancient Tablets Confirm Biblical Account of Jewish Exile in Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon

JERUSALEM – Over 100 tablets that date back to the times of Nebuchadnezzar’s rule in Babylon, now modern-day Iraq, have been placed on display in Jerusalem as a further testament to the reliability of the Scriptures.

The palm-sized tablets, which provide a glimpse into the lives of the Jews during the time they lived in exile in Babylon, had been discovered in Iraq and held by a UK-based Israeli collector. The artifacts contain writing in the ancient akkadian cuneiform script and detail transactions, trades and contracts between Jews in approximately 500 B.C.

They also trace at least one Judean family over four generations: a man named Samak-Yama, his son, grandson and his grandson’s five children. Some of the names cited in the tablets include references to Yah, such as Netanyahu and Shalemiyahu, signifying the name of God, or Yahveh.

As outlined in the Old Testament, which is known to Jews as the Tanakh, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon destroyed Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem and forced many Jews into exile.

“But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon,” reads Ezra 5:12.

“Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite, who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, who Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away,” Esther 2:6 also outlines in providing the story of Esther, who later became the Queen of Persia, or modern-day Iran.

Psalm 137:1 also outlines the sorrow many Jews felt during this time in exile in stating, “By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion.” Hence, the exhibition has been entitled “By the Rivers of Babylon.”

Connect with Christian News Historians believe that the discovery of the ancient tablets, which also mention the Chebar River noted in Ezekiel 11, to be a fascinating find.

“We started reading the tablets and within minutes we were absolutely stunned,” Babylonian expert Filip Vukosavovic told reporters. “It fills in a critical gap in understanding of what was going on in the life of Judeans in Babylonia more than 2,500 years ago.”

“On the one hand it’s boring details, but on the other you learn so much about who these exiled people were and how they lived,” he said.

Filmmaker and author Simcha Jacobovici wrote in an article for the Huffington Post last week that the tablets underscore the accuracy of the Scriptures.

“This discovery is a remarkable confirmation of the historical reliability of the Biblical text,” he said. “It is also a reminder that many people once lived in Iraq.”

The tablets are now on display in Jerusalem’s Bible Lands Museum, and will be available for public viewing for the next year.

Almost every day a new archaeological find is discovered which confirms the veracity of the Bible. That may not be important to you, but it is to Christians.

History, man! Confirmed: Nebuchadnezzar’s rule and exile of Jews in Babylon/Iraq (as per the Bible as a reliable historical resource and account of the times.)

This is pretty major news, coming alongside the find of the ancient Gallilean village and the upcoming manuscript fragments from Egyptian death masks that contain passages from a first-century gospel of Mark and several other very early second-century manuscripts.

Yes, for the skeptics some of the things they were so skeptical about is now under their noses:0)

I wouldn't be surprised if we received some REAL news on other Biblical objects soon as well. There has always been stories of the Ark of the Covenant and Noah's Ark. Most end up being stories without physical evidence.

Now those would be great.

You people think I'm a son of a bitch. Probably close to a billion people, men, women, children, were killed during the course of history by the Egyptions, by Alexander, by the Romans, by Malmoud, by the Khans, by the Spanish, by Cromwell, by Hitler, by the Marxists, by etc. Most of those killed or enslaved were praying to God at the moment of their death. It didn't save any of them from injustice. God does not concern himself or interfere in the piddling affairs of mankind. We have a new batch of thugs turning themselves loose on the world ready to continue the conquering process. They are more studied than and clever than the old brand.

Do you people realy believe that discovering a path to Noah's arc or discussing an anchient personality is going to save you from the Obamas, Bushs, Hillarys, Grahams, or Kennedys? Those people have the mentalities of jackals. They are incapable of being influenced by anything but their own ambition and impulses. Waving a bible at them and shouting faith-held biblical arguments only assures them that they are winning. Screaming that God will punish them only provokes laughter.

Grow up and live in the real world.

Ancient Jewish village found in Galilee

Uncovered site includes ancient synagogue, houses and evidence of pottery production, says Samford University professor who led archaeological dig

Strange told Al.com that the site teaches about Galilean Jewish village life and its economy at the birth of both Christianity and the Judaism of the Talmud.

The village was apparently abandoned in the mid-fourth century.

What happened in the mid 4h century or so?

The Roman–Sassanid war. A war between the newly Christian Rome and the Zoroastrian Sassanids. This war was probably the first real holy war waged against Christianity and it nearly lost. The Jews sided with which ever side seemed to be winning and at the end lost out big. The war devastated the middle east and it never recovered. The Muslim victories were because of this war which weakened both empires.

Why do so many alleged Christians require archeology to confirm the spiritual relationship between themselves and the Creator of the universe?

Because you have to reach the Greeks differently then you reach the Jews. Meaning that the Jews had a history of scripture and the Greeks didn't.

There are people who don't believe the Bible. They don't believe it say because they think that evolution has dis-proven the Bible. But these people haven't actually looked at the facts. So they rule out believing. If you show these people things from archaeology that lines up with what scripture says. Then it may make it easier to reach those people with what I consider to be the truth. In an effort to help them.

Why do so many alleged Christians require archeology to confirm the spiritual relationship between themselves and the Creator of the universe?

Alleged? I have been a Christian for 43 years, and every day is an exciting adventure with the Lord. I don't need Archaeology to confirm my relationship with Him, rather He confirms Himself to me in many different ways with evidence, and that happens to be one of the ways.

Let me paint a picture for you. Imagine you are on a jury in a courtroom. You weigh the respective evidence as the prosecutor and defense attorney each presents their case, with each trying to prove their position. Evidence is objective, but proof is subjective. You have to decide if the evidence rises to the level of proof. In this imaginary case the prosecutor provides 5 pieces of evidence, and the defense attorney produces 3 pieces of evidence to counter the prosecution. In this imaginary case you decide the evidence does not rise to the level of proof.

Now we come to a different case. A person has to decide if the evidence for the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ is strong enough to prove it actually is true. The defense provides strong evidence day by day as the trial progresses, but the prosecutor raises one objection after another, however his objections are simply pettifogging to cloud the issue. In this case the defense has presented strong evidence day after day for 43 years. There reaches a point where doubt becomes certainty. Unfortunately, the public listens to the media instead of examining the evidence, and blinds themselves to the truth.

Sennacherib’s Fall

21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Because you have prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22 this is the word the LORD has spoken against him:

“The Virgin Daughter of Zion despises and mocks you. The Daughter of Jerusalem tosses her head as you flee. 23 Who is it you have insulted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel! 24 By your messengers you have heaped insults on the Lord. And you have said, ‘With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its pines. I have reached its remotest heights, the finest of its forests. 25 I have dug wells in foreign landsa and drunk the water there. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.’

26 “Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it; now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone. 27 Their people, drained of power, are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, scorchedb before it grows up.

28 “But I know where you stay and when you come and go and how you rage against me. 29 Because you rage against me and because your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came.

30 “This will be the sign for you, O Hezekiah:

“This year you will eat what grows by itself, and the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 31 Once more a remnant of the house of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. 32 For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

33 “Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria:

“He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield or build a siege ramp against it. 34 By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city,” declares the LORD. 35 “I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!”

36 Then the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty- five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! 37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there. 38 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer cut him down with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.

article: As outlined in the Old Testament, which is known to Jews as the Tanakh, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon destroyed Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem and forced many Jews into exile.

Your article is further proof that the old testament was written about 3,000 years ago. It was written when the Jews learned how to read/write from their mentors in Babylon. It was written after their Babylonian captivity and upon return to their sheppard fields that you call Israel.

From the Sennacherib tablet discovered in 1830:

The Account Recorded on the Prism

"On the six inscribed sides of this clay prism, King Sennacherib recorded eight military campaigns undertaken against various peoples who refused to submit to Assyrian domination. In all instances, he claims to have been victorious. As part of the third campaign, he beseiged Jerusalem and imposed heavy tribute on Hezekiah, King of Judah-a story also related in the Bible, where Sennacherib is said to have been defeated by "the angel of the Lord," who slew 185,000 Assyrian soldiers (II Kings 18-19)." - Oriental Institute

Here is an exact rendering of Sennacheribs haughty introductory declaration about himself and his third campaign:

Sennacherib, the great king, the mighty king, king of the world, king of Assyria, king of the four quarters, the wise shepherd, favorite of the great gods, guardian of right, lover of justice, who lends support, who comes to the aid of the destitute, who performs pious acts, perfect hero, mighty man, first among all princes, the powerful one who consumes the insubmissive, who strikes the wicked with the thunderbolt; the god Assur, the great mountain, an unrivaled kinship has entrusted to me, and above all those who dwell in palaces, has made powerful my weapons; from the upper sea of the setting sun to the lower sea of the rising sun, he has brought the black-headed people in submission at my feet; and mighty kings feared my warfare, leaving their homes and flying alone, like the sidinnu, the bird of the cave, to some inaccessible place...

In my third campaign, I went against the Hittite-land. Lulê, king of Sidon, the terrifying splendor of my sovereignty overcame him, and far off into the midst of the sea he fled. There he died. Great Sidon, Little Sidon, Bît-Zitti, Zaribtu, Mahalliba, Ushu, Akzib, Akko, his strong, walled cities, where there were fodder and drink, for his garrisons, the terrors of the weapon of Assur, my lord, overpowered them and they bowed in submission at my feet. I seated Tuba'lu on the royal throne over them, and tribute, gifts for my majesty, I imposed upon him for all time, without ceasing.

From Menachem, the Shamsimurunite, Tuba'lu the Sidonite, Abdi-liti the Arvadite, Uru-milki the Gublite, Mitinti the Ashdodite Budu-ilu the Beth Ammonite, Kammusu-nadbi the Moabite, Malik-rammu the Edomite, kings of Amurru, all of them, numerous presents as their heavy tribute, they brought before me for the fourth time, and kissed my feet.

But Sidka, the king of Ashkelon, who had not submitted to my yoke, the gods of his father's house, himself, his wife, his sons, his daughters, his brothers, the seed of his paternal house, I tore away and brought to Assyria. Sharru-lu- dari, son of Rukibti, their former king, I set over the people of Ashkelon, and I imposed upon him the payment of tribute: presents to my majesty. He accepted my yoke. In the course of my campaign, Beth-Dagon, Joppa, Banaibarka, Asuru, cities of Sidka, who had not speedily bowed in submission at my feet, I besieged, I conquered, I carried off their spoil.

The officials, nobles, and people of Ekron, who had thrown Padi their king—bound by oath and curse of Assyria— into fetters of iron and had given him over to Hezekiah, the Judahite—he kept him in confinement like an enemy— their heart became afraid, and they called upon the Egyptian kings, the bowmen, chariots and horses of the king of Meluhha [Ethiopia], a countless host, and these came to their aid. In the neighborhood of Eltekeh, their ranks being drawn up before me, they offered battle. With the aid of Assur, my lord, I fought with them and brought about their defeat. The Egyptian charioteers and princes, together with the Ethiopian king's charioteers, my hands captured alive in the midst of the battle. Eltekeh and Timnah I besieged, I captured, and I took away their spoil.

I approached Ekron and slew the governors and nobles who had rebelled, and hung their bodies on stakes around the city. The inhabitants who rebelled and treated (Assyria) lightly I counted as spoil. The rest of them, who were not guilty of rebellion and contempt, for whom there was no punishment, I declared their pardon. Padi, their king, I brought out to Jerusalem, set him on the royal throne over them, and imposed upon him my royal tribute.

As for Hezekiah the Judahite, who did not submit to my yoke: forty-six of his strong, walled cities, as well as the small towns in their area, which were without number, by levelling with battering-rams and by bringing up seige- engines, and by attacking and storming on foot, by mines, tunnels, and breeches, I besieged and took them. 200,150 people, great and small, male and female, horses, mules, asses, camels, cattle and sheep without number, I brought away from them and counted as spoil. (Hezekiah) himself, like a caged bird I shut up in Jerusalem, his royal city. I threw up earthworks against him— the one coming out of the city-gate, I turned back to his misery. His cities, which I had despoiled, I cut off from his land, and to Mitinti, king of Ashdod, Padi, king of Ekron, and Silli-bêl, king of Gaza, I gave (them). And thus I diminished his land. I added to the former tribute, and I laid upon him the surrender of their land and imposts—gifts for my majesty. As for Hezekiah, the terrifying splendor of my majesty overcame him, and the Arabs and his mercenary troops which he had brought in to strengthen Jerusalem, his royal city, deserted him. In addition to the thirty talents of gold and eight hundred talents of silver, gems, antimony, jewels, large carnelians, ivory-inlaid couches, ivory-inlaid chairs, elephant hides, elephant tusks, ebony, boxwood, all kinds of valuable treasures, as well as his daughters, his harem, his male and female musicians, which he had brought after me to Nineveh, my royal city. To pay tribute and to accept servitude, he dispatched his messengers..

Complete translations of the records of Sennacherib can be found in Daniel D. Luckenbill, Ancient Records of Assyria and Babylonia, vol. 2, and in James Pritchard's Ancient Near Eastern Texts (1950).

The Biblical Comparison

The best way to see the accuracy of the Biblical account with this record on Sennacherib's Prism is to compare 2 Kings 18:13-19:37 and Isaiah 36:1-37:38 with the last paragraph on the above account.

A Mystery of History

After comparing the Biblical account with that of the Sennacherib Prism one Scripture stands out above all of the rest, which remains a mystery even to today. It is also recorded in the Book of Kings along with the Book of Isaiah. It is the part where Isaiah gives a Word from the Lord just after King Hezekiah's awesome prayer.

Isa 37:33-38 "Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: 'He shall not come into this city, Nor shoot an arrow there, Nor come before it with shield, Nor build a siege mound against it. By the way that he came, By the same shall he return; And he shall not come into this city,' Says the LORD. 'For I will defend this city, to save it For My own sake and for My servant David's sake.'" Then the angel of the LORD went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses--all dead. So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, returned home, and remained at Nineveh."

This miracle cannot be substantiated by archaeological discoveries for a reason of which only God knows, but all of the pieces seem to fit together because even today no one has determined exactly why Sennacherib did not even enter Jerusalem with his great army once it was besieged. After reading his campaigns on his Prism it would seem that this was the thing he had intended to do, and with all anxiety.

Another revealing fact is this: At this point in time there was an abrupt discontinuance of Assyria’s western invasions. Professor George Rawlinson of Oxford noted:

Sennacherib during his later years made no expedition further westward than Cilicia; nor were the Assyrian designs against Southern Syria and Egypt resumed till toward the close of the reign of Esarhaddon (Historical Illustrations of the Old Testament, 1873, p. 145).

Herodotus and Josephus on Sennacherib's Campaigns

Herodotus, the father of ancient Greek history, records what is probably an Egyptian legend (that grew out of this historical event); he suggests that Sennacherib’s fighting force was greatly reduced when in one night, a plague of field mice gnawed the quivers, bowstrings, and shield-straps of his soldiers, thus making them suddenly vulnerable to their enemies (cf. Edersheim, Bible History, VII, p.155).

Josephus quotes the Chaldean historian Berosus as follows:

Now when Sennacherib was returning from his Egyptian war to Jerusalem, he found his army under Rabshakeh his general in danger [by a plague], for God had sent a pestilential distemper upon his army; and on the very night of the siege, a hundred fourscore and five thousand, with their captains and generals, were destroyed (Antiquities 10.1.5).

But the account of his death may give us some sort of distant light as to this miracle and the possibility of his great army being utterly routed.

Sennacherib Murdered by his own sons.

One interesting note worth investigating further is where the Bible records what happened to Sennacherib once he had returned to Nineveh, without his great army.

In reviewing the background of this situation King Hezekiah was intensely concerned about the armies of the Assyrian king Sennacherib. He sent his servants to inquire of the prophet Isaiah just exactly what the Lord was saying that he needed to do. Once his servants had found Isaiah, he said:

2 Kings 19:6-7 "And Isaiah said to them, "Thus you shall say to your master, 'Thus says the LORD: "Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me. Surely I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land."

The book of Kings goes on to record what had actually happened to Sennacherib once he returned to his capital, Nineveh.

2 Kings 19:37 Now it came to pass, as he (Sennacherib) was worshiping in the temple of Nisroch his god, that his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Then Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place."

This exact same account was unearthed, having been recorded on a clay tablet, now in the British Museum.

'On the twentieth day of the month Tebet Sennacherib king of Assyria his son slew him in rebellion... Esarhaddon his son sat on the throne of Assyria.'

This clay tablet along with 2 Kings 19:37 was the last recorded mention of Sennacherib, the powerful Assyrian monarch who once ruled the world.

Your article is further proof that the old testament was written about 3,000 years ago. It was written when the Jews learned how to read/write from their mentors in Babylon. It was written after their Babylonian captivity and upon return to their sheppard fields that you call Israel.

This is further evidence of your pettifogging and ignorance of the facts.

Scientists have discovered the earliest known Hebrew writing — an inscription dating from the 10th century B.C., during the period of King David's reign.

The Babylonian period of exile was 587/586 to 538 BC.

I know how the jury system works. Been there decided that.

It's just interesting to me how some folks have confused doing pew aerobics and archaeological artifacts with having a spiritual relationship between themselves and the Creator of the Universe.

"I am the way the truth and the life"

If that's true, then surely the living Creator of the Universe can manage to make it self-evident to the individual without all the MYSTERYous religious theatrics that various folks have propped up in His name.

The failure is on your side in failing to see God wants a people who come to Him in FAITH believing what He says.

No failure here.

It's just self-evident to me that pew aerobics and scriptural regurgitation on the schedule dictated by some occult fleecemeister's religious solar calendar have little or nothing to do with faith or spirituality.

I'll believe what HE says through my own eyes, and free mind -- which is often not what religious pulpit parrots wearing vestigial Roman plumage say HE says.

Creation is full of His self-evidence -- the things that call themselves churches whilst passing the plate around to keep some L.I.F.E.R. parrot perched within them... not so much.

Ok the seed still has life. I stand corrected.

You people think I'm a son of a bitch.

Not really. It's just a case of your frustration and inability as an intellectual to understand and comprehend that which transcends the material world. In other words, you've consciously refused to accept the truth -- the existence of a 4th dimension, the Creator of the Universe, proof of His existence, His authority, His Laws, historical accounts and testimony, our purpose, the certainty of an Afterlife with God, and the Final Judgement. However, it's just a weak "riddle" that you don't even attempt to understand. It's much easier to allay your frustration with ridicule and dismissive indifference.

I can only speak for myself -- it's my opinion that you've built this impenetrable emotional fortress around your spiritual and intellect. A man of your intellect certainly can not dismiss the obvious, that all things have indeed been designed and created. Your mission in the Winter of your much accomplished life ought to be in overcoming your hardened heart and humbling yourself to finally see what you must, what you were born to understand.

The "secret" many who eventually will, or are about to die know: THERE IS LIFE AFTER DEATH. Those with faith also know there is a permeation of evil in this world, that we must all evade and elude it and much as possible before the ineviable (no one gets out alive.) Those with faith don't believe the Cult of Personality, i.e., Popes, Bushs, Hillarys, Grahams, or Kennedys will save them here or in the Hereafter. They believe in a Redeemer of our collective sin(s).

Bottom Line -- when your spirit survives the physical death, will you have fought for and saved your soul for all eternity and claimed "Victory!" Or will you have surrendered unconditionally to a lazy lie till the bitter end?

The world’s first city developed around its temples, and only later did palaces play a role. Its view of the world was conditioned, as in all ancient societies, by totalitarian religious belief. So the picture that comes into focus is that of a theocratic command economy, hierarchically organized , centrally directed, and regulated according to an ideology propagated by a priesthood, playing the role that, 5,000 years later, Soviet Marxists would call ‘the engineers of human souls’. Such was temple rule.

Seems you're allowing yourself to get too sidetracked by irrelevant minutia and context.

History is history, and civilization in its infancy should be undertood in that context. Ancient culture was indeed centered around God, with its priests taking on the role of "counselmen." I reckon there are worst goverenances than a "theocracy" that abides in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and the wisdom of Solomon and David, aren't there?

To characterize it as "Soviet" or "Marxist" isn't exactly the truth, is it? There had to be an natural evolution as man became more independent, living outside the village or town, and harder more resourceful workers were rewarded.

Well, it seems those Russian folks somehow got the idear that the Tzar was nothing but a fraud propped up atop the Russian Orthodox State-establishment.

Just like NebuchadnezZAR and all the other CaeSARean state established Sun-princes who came before and after him.

Apparently, "Tsar" is a title that goes way back to the latin derivation of ruler or king, or emperor. So you believe the names or titles that connotate "TZAR" (as in NebuchadnezZAR and CaeSARean) are in reality heathen faiths masquerading as "Christian"? Or mixing church and state as the ruling authority as did the pope for centuries?

I reviewed your post to Gary:

"...Surely the living Creator of the Universe can manage to make it self-evident to the individual without all the MYSTERYous religious theatrics that various folks have propped up in His name."

What are your actual doubts about? The evidence of and for the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ? His Deity? Or just the unneeded (as per the Gospel) traditions, beads and incense, statues, and choreography of either the Catholic Church OR the Orthodox Church?

Or am I still wrong?
