Marijuana use has not been found to increase the risk of car crashes, according to a new federal report.

Studying car accidents in Virginia Beach, Va., during a 20-month period ending in 2012, researchers randomly sampled 3,000 accident-involved drivers and found no evidence suggesting those with marijuana in their system were more prone to accidents, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report released Friday.

When researchers controlled for factors such as age and gender, they found no evidence marijuana use increases accident risks. This was despite the fact that, in the study, drivers who tested positive for marijuana use happened to be involved in more accidents.

By comparison, the study found drivers with breath alcohol of .08 to be about four times more likely than sober drivers to be involved in accidents. Those nearly double the legal limit, at .15, were 12 times more likely to crash.

The study is billed as the largest ever conducted to assess the relative crash risk of drivers who consume alcohol compared to pot.

Not that I'm against pot legalization, but this study is baseless unless all subject involved submitted blood samples after the accident... and the exact same study was done 20 years prior.

A multitude of drivers have THC in their blood during an accident and it goes unnoticed or uncharged because modern LE today is way behind the eight ball in identifying and arresting for driving while high.

I started in 1994. There was nobody trained and qualified to identify and roadside field test for marihuana intoxication until five years prior to retirement.

I couldn't tell you how many times I had to draw blood after a serious injury one car accident and DWI arrest... based on the smell of an alcoholic beverage on their breath, slurred speech, glassy eyes and the accident itself... and when the lab results came back, there was both a BAC and THC in the blood... and I would never have been able to know it.

I'm not against pot legalization... but as more and more people become a slave to it, it's ignorant to think it won't be more of a contributing factor towards MVA's

I think all would agree that pot laws have dramatically loosened over the last 20 years. Yet it has not resulted in deadlier highways, as many claimed it would. This is true at both the national and state level. The decline in fatalities has been at least as great in medical marijuana states. Most recent figures from the nhtsa =>

Roadway deaths fall nearly 25 percent in a decade, fatality rates at a historic low

Dec 19, 2014

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today released the 2013 Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data that shows a 3.1 percent decrease from the previous year and a nearly 25 percent decline in overall highway deaths since 2004. In 2013, 32,719 people died in traffic crashes. The estimated number of people injured in crashes also declined by 2.1 percent.

Now this is interesting. Here are the traffic fatality rates by state for 2013. Note that Colorado, Washington, and Oregon were below the national average, which was 1.11 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. DC, which has medical marijuana and just vote 2 to 1 to legalize, had the lowest rate in the country.
