Regardless how the figures are crunched, Mr. Green, the fact remains that it takes several working people to fund one welfare slob. If you haven't noticed, we are running out of enough people to keep funding your kind of kindness. When there are too many on welfare, Xbox, unemployment or disability, to be funded by the remaining work force, what do you suggest we do?

Your premise is flawed. There is plenty of money that can be used to fund our social safety net.

However, to answer your question: ...what we should do - is elect representatives who will re-write the tax-code to favor AMERICAN job creation. Our current tax code has done just the opposite.

The creation of an additional 500,000 good middle-class jobs per month for a couple of years would solve virtually all of the real problems our society is facing.

This is my opinion.

Instead of taxing the workers, tax the employers... SCOTUS has ruled that corporations are people too, you know. So make them pay the same taxes that people have to pay. Especially the ones that launder their money in offshore accounts to avoid paying taxes. Tax the bankers, insurance companies, oil companies and big pharmaceuticals... they can afford it.

government jobs? Private sector?

How will you create 6 million middle class jobs a year?

You think this idea is conducive to a capitalistic society? lol

So... basically, tax the dog shit out of anything doing well, financially... to offset what those that are doing bad, financially? Why not just claim we should be a socialist country?

Maybe you could put up all the documents you need to get welfare in Hawaii.

The we could put together a packet. For anyone who wants to retire to Hawaii. They just need to pay us a fee and we will but them the plane ticket and a packet of every form already filled out.

The Work versus Welfare Trade-Off: 2013

August 19, 2013

The full White Paper by the Cato Institute is available in pdf, epub, and mobi formats at:

The PDF download is at:

I note that the Mike Dunford article at scientopia refers to taking a job at "minimum wage" and the Cato Institute article refers to taking a job "paying slightly less than welfare."

I'm not sure what the precise difference is but logic suggests that unless welfare pays more than minimum wage, a job paying slightly less than welfare would, necessarily, pay less than minimum wage.

http://authority.scientopia.org/2013/08/21/no-cato-welfare-doesnt-pay-more-than-minimum-wage/

The truth of the matter, of course, is that even a minimum wage job is likely to leave a family better off than no job at all. This is true in part because many assistance programs do not automatically cut off the moment that you start to work. The programs have income-based eligibility requirements, and many people who work minimum wage jobs will continue to qualify for these programs.

This does not show up in the Cato report, because the Cato report did not bother to include continued eligibility for benefits when they compared "welfare" with a minimum wage job.

http://object.cato.org/sites/cato.org/files/pubs/pdf/the_work_versus_welfare_trade-off_2013_wp.pdf

From the Cato Report at page 2:

Because of increases in the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the creation of the Child Tax Credit (CTC), as well as the adoption of state-level equivalents of the EITC, it is possible for an individual leaving welfare to take a job paying slightly less than welfare without a loss of income in 39 states. However, that difference is small and not likely to offset the value of leisure.

At scientopia, commenter Andy noted:

You're also ignoring the fact that many people on welfare also work part time jobs, attempting to stay under a certain income in order to receive benefits.

They're also getting paid for literally doing nothing, while (as Daniel mentioned) working families have additional costs. Not just daycare, but transportation and food as well.

Then take into account many others on welfare who work off the books, or do side jobs such as computer repair/auto repair/scrap collecting etc. And there's even more who sell drugs and services for money.

HHS Report: Percentage of Americans on Welfare Hits Recorded High

By Terence P. Jeffrey

(CNSNews.com) - According to the 2014 version of a report that the Department of Health and Human Services is required by law to issue annually, the percentage of Americans on welfare in 2011 was the highest yet calculated. The data for 2011 is the most recent in the report.

How will you create 6 million middle class jobs a year?

1. Tax reform - Tax incentives for the owners (stockholders) of US businesses that have created new jobs. Tax penalties for owners/stockholders of companies that have moved jobs off-shore.

2. Reform trade policies to favor job creation in the US.

3. New and higher tariffs on imported goods.

4. Jump start the process by committing the necessary resources to rebuild US infrastructure.
