Title: Senator says restaurant employees shouldn’t be required to wash their hands

Once we’re done debating whether children should be vaccinated, we can move on to other pressing public health questions, such as whether eateries can force their employees to wash their hands after they use the bathroom.

At least one freshman U.S. senator thinks, “nah.” Because freedom.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), at the end of an appearance Monday at the Bipartisan Policy Center, volunteered a story about “his bias when it comes to regulatory reform.”

Tillis said he was at a Starbucks in 2010 talking to a woman about regulations and where businesses should be allowed to opt out. His coffee companion challenged him, asking whether employees there should be required to wash their hands.

“As a matter of fact I think this is one where I think I can illustrate the point,” he recalled telling her. “I don’t have any problem with Starbucks if they choose to opt out of this policy as long as they post a sign that says we don’t require our employees to wash their hands after leaving the restroom. The market will take care of that. It’s one example.” (Is requiring a sign not a regulation?)

Tillis, who told the story with his right hand raised for emphasis, concluded that in his example most businesses who posted signs telling customers their food workers didn’t have to wash their hands would likely go out of business. Ah, the free market!

Closing the event, Bipartisan Policy Center President Jason Grumet said, “I’m not sure if I’m going to shake your hand…” (But then he did.)

Just so you know, in describing why handwashing is required, the FDA says, “Proper handwashing reduces the spread of fecal-oral pathogens from the hands of a food employee to foods.”

If Tillis’s career in politics doesn’t work out, may we politely suggest he pursue anything but food service.

Updated at 5:30 p.m.: An Associated Press reporter caught up with Tillis on Capitol Hill, and the senator did not back down from his belief that businesses should “get to make that decision versus government.”

He makes a valid point.

Any business doing that would not last long.

There isn't any difference between having to post a sign telling employees they have to wash their hands, and having to post a sign telling customers that the employees don't have to wash their hands.

The proper answer is to not have to post signs.

Yes, that means that there will be some employers who don't post signs, and that some employees who would have washed their hands if reminded won't. There are already employees who ignore the sign, and they will behave the same way either way. Nobody monitors employee handwashing.

In most surgery prep rooms, there are no signs reminding doctors and nurses that they have to wash their hands thoroughly prior to surgery. The absence of a sign does not mean that doctors and nurses don't. The presence doesn't mean they do.

Eat at somebody's house, and the chances are even that the cook didn't wash her hands.

We do not need laws to tell us to wash our hands. People do or don't anyway, and they get sick or don't anyway.

And the truth is, having the food supply a little dirty increases human immunity.

The proper answer is: stop making employers put up signs. Stop spending time legislating such things. Stop hiring people to go around and check such things. Just stop it.

The answer is NOT to try to split the baby in the way this Congressman did. Post one stupid sign in place of another stupid sign.

There are other signs we could post in the bathroom too: don't pick your nose and eat it. Pee in the urinal. Jerk off elsewhere.

It's all about posting a command. We should stop posting so many commands.

Just so you know, in describing why handwashing is required, the FDA says, “Proper handwashing reduces the spread of fecal-oral pathogens from the hands of a food employee to foods.”

But does anyone actually enforce these laws? When was the last time they sent in undercover agents to catch food workers not washing their hands?

Why not a law to require all persons to wash their hands, not just the employees?

Put cameras up aimed at the sinks and serve no one who doesn't wash.

As it is, the honor system for food workers (and no one else) is kinda stupid and outdated.

There are other signs we could post in the bathroom too: don't pick your nose and eat it. Pee in the urinal. Jerk off elsewhere.

You must hang out in much more exciting venues than I do.

This I would just fine once you ban the ambulance chasers from encouraging and filing lawsuits from people who claim injury because there was no sign telling them/everyone that {fill in the blank}. I wonder what the jury would have decided about the old lady that put a fresh hot coffee from the McDonalds's drive thru between her legs as she drove off had McDonald's posted a sign in clear view of her driver's seat and a sign on the cup that said "Warning, putting a hot cup of coffee between your legs as you drive away can be dangerous. Don't do it."
