Groveland, Florida – Two Florida cops are being accused of throwing an 11-year-old girl to the ground and holding her at gunpoint in her own home. The police were dispatched to the home because someone had accidentally set off the burglar alarm. Since the alarm tripped accidentally, no one in the house was aware that the police were on their way. When officers let themselves into the house with guns drawn, it was a total surprise to the young girl who was sitting at home watching television. “One of the officers was pushing me down and when he was pushing me down, (he) put his knee on me and the other officer had his gun pointed at me,” the young girl told Channel 9. The girl’s father, Jean Guirand couldn’t imagine how the police officers would possibly think that she was a threat, and treat her that way in her own home. “Someone should get fired for doing something like this,” Guirand said. He also told reporters that his daughter was traumatized by the experience. When the story went public, it was discovered that the officers involved have a short history with the police force, but a long list of complaints. According to Channel 9 news, Officers James Festa and John Rigdon have only been with the department for three years, but both have been disciplined several times. According to his personal file, Festa was reprimanded in December for botching a child abuse investigation, and was suspended for sleeping on the job back in 2013. Meanwhile, Rigdon was suspended in May and demoted in 2013 and has been accused of filing false police reports on several occasions. Instances of police throwing young folks on the ground and holding them at gunpoint, in their own home aren’t isolated. In October, a North Carolina teen was assaulted and pepper sprayed by police in his own home after he was mistaken for a burglar. 18-year-old DeShawn Currie was accused of robbing the house in which he lived.

Meanwhile, Rigdon was suspended in May and demoted in 2013 and has been accused of filing false police reports on several occasions. You would think they would become unemployable as cops. Especially the one who filed false police reports. How can he be allowed to testify in any court?
Well, I guess they were in fear of their life. I am sure an 11 year old girl is very intimidating to grown men with police training and all their gear ( guns, batons, mace, etc) But hey, they got to go home safely. I guess if she had been a grown man, they would have called in an artillery barrage. These clowns need to be in a different line of work, like cleaning out barn stalls.

He wasn't, which leads me to believe the "false" report was minor. Perhaps he put the wrong date on it or misspelled a witness' name. Maybe he should be labeled a "bad cop" and fired for sleeping on the job. The article thought it essential to point that out, too.

Gee, they went into the hose where a burglar alarm went off, immediately shot the dog (how many burglars take a dog, especially a three-legged one with them on a job?) then saw an 11-year-old girl (obviously she was up to no good sitting there minding her own business). No, they don't have crystal balls - I'd say it's pretty obvious that they have no balls of any kind.

The cops were responding to a burglary. They did not know a) the alarm was accidentally set off, b) the girl was not the burglar, c) it was her home, and d) the girl was unarmed. YOU know that because you read it. THEY didn't know that at the time. Are you saying they should have known "a" through "d"? How should they have known that? Since they couldn't have possibly known those things, she posed a threat because she could have been an armed intruder.

As far as I am concerned, it is the duty of all Patriotic Americans to root out corruption. That's where you and I differ. You're a sheep - I'm not.
It's something that happens in the LE profession. Many officers, due to low staff levels will take many overtime details and burn the candle at both ends. It's always best to stop and park, while on patrol than fall asleep at the wheel and wreck. An occasional rest of the eyes isn't a horrific thing as long as the officer doesn't make a regular habit of it and it's done tactically safe. If an officer does this often, then he/she should be counseled and trained. Sleeping in a patrol car is dangerous for the officer.

The cops did not have to know that is was the girl's house. That is not what Deckard is asking. The question is, what caused the cops to continue to treat the girl as a threat long after it was obvious that she was not? It takes less than a 20 seconds to observe the behavior and state of mind that a suspect is in, an also take a survey of the level of armament that the suspect has in their immediate surroundings. Isolate and question, while treating the suspect with an appropriate level of respect. When surrounded by unknowns, the last thing a person should do is react in the most severe manner possible in hopes that nothing bad would happen. I do not see a reason for two grown men to fear a child after they determine that A) she is not armed and B) they find that it is her home after they question if it is her home. Waltzing in and apprehending everyone or shooting up the place is more Hollywood-esque and the reason that debates like these happen all of the time. From the scant few details, it would be hard to tell what transpired, but it does seem like these two cops could find more suitable employment in another field of work.

Keep in mind, the police were operating under the premise that there was a burglar in the house. "B) they find that it is her home after they question if it is her home." They asked her if it was her home and she said 'no'. Are we talking about the same incident?
You would think so, eh? Of course, there's the chance he was only suspected and the charges were not proven. The charges alone would still make him a weaker witness in any major case. No defense attorney worth his fees would fail to throw it in his face in front of the jury.
Drudge had that story a few days back where a 3yo girl shot both her parents at a motel by reaching in mom's purse for a piece of candy and pulling the trigger of a handgun. Grazed daddy's buttock and hit her mama in the shoulder, I think.
So the police are to blame for enforcing laws passed by the citizens (or their representatives in the legislature)? You want to give that decision- making power to law enforcement? What if some libertarian border patrol agent decides not to enforce our immigration laws because he believes in open borders? Okay with you? I think the parents are to blame for the massive amount of inattentiveness and stupidity displayed in situations such as that one. The weapon is a tool and the child did not know the full consequences of their actions. Parents who do not thinks and prepare for simple eventualities will reap what they sow.
