When Air Force Staff Sgt. Tim Wright woke up on the morning of January 17th, he didn't know that would be his last day alive on earth.
His commanding officer, Col. Elizabeth Shaw of the 43rd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, was unaware as well that by nightfall, her career in the military would be as dead as Wright's lifeless body.
The 30 year-old native of Pensacola, Florida met his tragic demise while playing the role of a "hostage" in a terrorist training exercise at Pope Army Airfield in North Carolina.
The noncom was acting his part to a tee when he slipped and fell in front of a Humvee filled with "abductors." In a split second and terrible mistake, the vehicle lurched forward and rolled over Wright.
DIED SOON AFTER BEING STRUCK
Medical teams on scene worked frantically to save him, but he died in a matter of moments.
Shaw got the blame for the horrible screw-up.
"Commanders are responsible for ensuring compliance with all safety standards," said Col. Kenneth Moss, who ordered the female colonel relieved of her duties.
His decision was based upon a ground accident investigation report and OSI probe in the death of the sergeant from the Fort Bragg-based air-evac squadron.
