Joni Ernst, the freshman Republican senator from Iowa who will provide the GOP response to President Obama's State of the Union Address on Tuesday, has been in the Senate less than a month, but she has already made history. Ernst is the first woman ever elected to Congress from Iowa and the first female combat veteran ever to serve in the Senate.
Largely unknown a year ago, Ernst claimed victory in November over four-term Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley for the U.S. Senate seat previously held for decades by liberal hero Tom Harkin.
