CLEVELAND, Ohio - The July 18 start for the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland is set to be earlier than any convention for either of the major parties since 1992, when the Democrats met in New York City to nominate Bill Clinton. The Republican Party announced Wednesday that the 2016 convention will run from July 18 to July 21 - a big change from its late-August 2012 convention in Tampa.
The Democrats have yet to announce a date and place for their convention, which will be held in Columbus, New York City or Philadelphia.
August and September conventions have become the norm in recent years. But the GOP moved up the date for 2016, in part, to allow the presidential nominee earlier access to general election money.
