Since the 2014 season is over for them figured I would start a 2015 thread.

Question: I know the draft is months away, but the only positions that I would draft for are: Defensive End, Defensive Tackle, Cornerback and Safety, in that order. No other positions … agree?

Bob Sturm: For me, DE, Safety, and then best difference maker regardless of position. LB, CB, DT, RB, or even QB. I now have a good foundation and need to keep adding difference makers. I am planning a thorough review of the prospects starting immediately.

Looks like they are getting the coaching staff signed to new contracts. I think it would have been a disaster if they had let Marinelli get away.

Also speculation for drafting needs has begun.

Thanks for getting this going. Yep nailing down Marinelli was good.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12)

So did you see that they let DeMarco Murray go to the Eagles and signed McFadden to take his place?

Also seen Greg Hardy is negotiating with an "unknown" team for his services, wonder if it's with the Cowboys since they could use someone like him and might be willing to take a chance on him?

Did not know about McFadden.

Yea but history shows very few RBs are any good after they turn 29, even the HOFers. So signing him to a long term deal would have not been a good thing, it would have just made the future salary cap issues even worse even more "dead money".

I have no doubt they will draft a RB somewhere around the 3rd round just in case McFadden can't run anymore, even behind the best line in the NFL.

This is who they signed since they didn't want to spend the money on Murray.

Since his cap hit is only $2.5 million they just might try to find another D lineman via free agency, like BJ Raji maybe...

And since they signed Hardy this would let them draft a RB in the 1st round if a good one (like Todd Gurley) fell to them at 27. But I still think they should draft "D" players the first 2 rounds and then look for a RB in 3 or 4.

No I didn't read it but can guess the gist of it from the wording. People are blasting Garrett for saying he wanted players of good character and those whining think Hardy doesn't have good character. They also think this was Jerry's doing and that Garrett should have stood up to him and told him he didn't want Hardy. These same people are highly pissed they "DIDN'T" overpay to keep Murray and so think this signing was all a big mistake.

That about cover it?

Cowboys RB Joseph Randle Cited On Drug Charge In Kansas February 4, 2015 11:07 AM

dfw.cbslocal.com/2015/02/...oseph-randle-arrested-on- drug-charge-in-kansas/ WICHITA, KS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle was issued a citation for drug charges in Kansas early Wednesday morning. According to the police report, the incident occurred just before 3 a.m. at a Wichita hotel. Police say a 22-year-old woman reported she and Randle were arguing in a hotel room. When police responded to the domestic violence call, officers found marijuana in the room. The 23-year-old was cited and provided a court date on a misdemeanor drug charge. Wichita Police call it an arrest. However, Randle’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, emphasized on Twitter that Randle was not arrested, a police officer issued him a citation and then left the hotel room. Burkhardt tweeted that Randle was asking three people to leave his room, but they didn’t want to leave.

The only way Hardy ends up making big bucks is if he plays like a pro bowl caliber player, lots of incentives but little in the way of base pay.

I haven't seen anymore about that Jerry story either.

Off topic: As much as I admire and enjoy the courage and play of Romo or Peyton, I think its foolish to risk paralysis from one simple blind side shot to the neck or back. They're both very vulnerable. Peyton has his SB win. I realize Romo's got "something to prove" BUT...

Exactamundo. By the time these guys get to the NFL, *everyone* is an ex-Big Man On Campus. There is no more Princess Treatment. The discipline curve is steep and must be addressed immediately (which why many of these top draft picks FAIL.)

By chance did any of you catch a show on ESPN where new Mich U. coach John Harbaugh is basically tutoring Jameis Winston on how to best answer questions about his personal life from NFL coaches? Advice: Keep it short and sweet...and DO address the stolen crab-legs caper (Winston during his rehearsal" ignored it.) NO way will this guy be disciplined enough to lead and succeed. And neither will Manziel. Character counts big time for a QB.

Well there used to be quite a few people running around wearing one of his jerseys (I live about 50 miles from Miami University). The salary cap is finally hurting the 'Boys.

They just restructured Romos contract which cleared about 12 million in cap space. (But it also made his cap hit in future years higher).

Now what they decide to do with that space remains to be seen. I would think some of it will be used to sign Dez and the rest on 1 or 2 single year contract free agents to help put them over the top to try and win the SB this year. It all depends on what they manage to get in the draft as to who they might decide to go after. My guess is it will be another LB or CB.

Just remember Murray didn't do anything either until the line gelled last year. He's 27 so could have a couple years left in the tank, we'll see.

Now that Hardys suspension has come down (10 games) it makes me wonder if this will change their draft strategy back to what it was before they signed him?

You know they will fight his suspension but I don't think Goodell is gonna budge on this one.

Well they just drafted a CB in the 1st round so that should eliminate the FA need for a CB. BTA they might get one anyway cause I think they really need to replace both Carr and Claiborne.

The draft was today? Too much going on? (NY Rangers lost to Caps with 2 seconds left in regulation :-(

Good FA corners are usually fluky. A proven CB is a solid move. Shoring up the Dallas O-Line was 2 years too late -- but better than never. I still feel that need a better RB. And frankly, a new tight end. Romo's bud has lost a step and is getting too beat up. AND...a competent backup QB, Romo's playing on borrowed time, like Peyton.

Since they picked up Hardy the need for a DL isn't as great I think they will draft a corner in the 1st if a good one is available.

I think they are going to try to get Bryce Petty (Baylor QB) in the draft this year, he's ranked 91 and the boys draft at 91 (3rd round). On the other hand they might go after Petty in the 2nd round (just to ensure they get him) since there a bunch of RBs available in the 3rd (which they need also).

After that they will draft a PK/KR and a bunch of the best defenders available, in which order well I have no clue.

(Moved this from the Tebow thread to here).

CB 1st round - Check... Byron Jones

2nd round - Latest I have seen is Mike Mayock (who is usually pretty accurate) has Petty up to 68 (from 91) and Dallas has the 60 spot, so if they are gonna take him it will be in the 2nd now. They could trade back a couple of spots to get an extra pick and still get Petty. On the other hand there are a couple of Defensive Linemen right around the 60 pick so they might go there instead.

3rd round - I still think they will go RB here cause so many are available BTA there are some good LBs available too so that could be a toss up.

So do we need to start a 2015 Playoff thread or wait awhile and do a 2016 Predictions thread or both??? :)

Well they overpaid for Carr and if he doesn't take a pay cut they may just cut him and go for a cheaper replacement.

And frankly, a new tight end.

All three they have are coming back and Witten is still performing at a high level. OTOH Escobar hasn't quite played up to par (blocking issues) but my guess is they still think they can fix that and he will be Witten's successor. I think they'll wait until next year before addressing that position.

Yea Stars fans haven't had much to cheer about the last 7 years or so. They did make the playoffs last year but fell to the Ducks as expected.

This year they just couldn't get the team to play Defense until they had dug too big a hole to recover from. They just couldn't make up the point differential between themselves and Winnipeg (and then the Jets just rolled over and died in 4 straight to the Ducks).

They did finish up nicely though and have something to look forward to next year. Especially the young Defensive core and I expect either Goligoski or Daley to be traded.

But the biggest question will be "Did we do the right thing during the off season with the goalie situation"?? Some people are blaming Lehtonen and some are blaming the team Defense as a whole, I think it's both myself. Backup goalie has been as issue for years but the way Enroth finished the season I think they just might be tempted to keep him.

Oh well will have to wait awhile till the finals are over to see how this all plays out for next year.

Wouldn't surprise me and wouldn't hurt my feelings especially if they are serious about making the run this year instead of next.

There are a few more QBs out there they could take (in the 4th or so) who would be a couple of year project like Romo was so that may work out for them. But they haven't kept 3 QBs in a while so don't know what they'll decide. Especially if they have to use 2 people to replace Harris skillset, WR, KR and Gunner.

Jerrah was quoted as saying he is banking on Romo being around another 5 years.

What choice does he have considering Romo's contract has 5 years to go on it. $1M this year, 8.5M in 2016, 14M in 2017, 19.5M in 2018 and 20.5M in 2019.

It would be nice to see a vet at his age be able to play out his contract and actually earn the money he's being paid. Most of them are cut with a couple of years left and the team ends up having to absorb all that dead cap money.

But I'm like you I have my doubts that he will get past 2017, that will leave 40M in dead cap money... Not good...

Round two we went for more off field risk. Kid can't pass pot screening. Maybe he should have been drafted by Denver. The stuff is legal there.

High end OT in the third round. Guess they want to make the Off line that much more impregnable:)

Have to read the article why they did not grab a RB in the third round.

Looks like Hardy's long suspension did change their draft strategy after all, just like you suggested yesterday and it didn't surprise me either. But I would have never thought Gregory would have slipped that far (close to 50 slots) BTA maybe some of the other owners are learning from past mistakes. Speaking of past mistakes has Jerry learned from his and is this gonna be another one?? They do seem to be better at taking the best player available. And they do seem to be better with problem children take Dez for example.

You do know why they took the chance on Gregory, they think he was the best pass rusher available in the draft. Something they need very badly. Guess we'll see.

Round 2 - After you said they were going to go for a DE or DL on the 2nd I expected them to take Danielle Hunter, but he didn't go until the Vikings round 3 pick 24. (Slipped almost a full round from where he was projected).

Round 3 - I figured if they were gonna make a run at Petty it would be here if they were serious about getting a good young'un for down the road, cause he was supposed to go right at 91 and they were 91. I figured if that was all a bunch of crap (smokescreen) they would go for another DL, LB or RB not another OL. But since OL Jeremy Parnell signed with the Jaguars in the off season I knew they had to address the position just didn't think it would be there.

From what I'm reading about Green he seems to be able to play both tackle positions (which is invaluable) so I can see why they snagged him. He'll eventually take Free's RT job (Free had foot surgery and won't be ready until July) and can backup the LT position if Smith gets hurt.

Round 4 - So since I've been wrong on just about everything so far I wonder what this will bring? Maybe they'll do something really idiotic and draft a punter?? :)

There are still some good RBs available (some have slipped, BTA maybe Jerry wasn't bluffing he's not going to draft another RB) Petty is still out there, they still need another LB or 2, another WR, maybe another CB if they decide to cut Carr after 1 June.

Oh well guess we'll see what happens.

He didn't last long he went to the Jets as the 4th pick of the 4th round.

I'm surprised they went for another OL in the 7th round and they went for a TE in the 7th round too. Since they lost their FB I imagine the TE is a good blocker and they will utilize him that way, especially if he has the ability to come out of the backfield and be another safety check down for Romo.

They did draft 2 LBs which I kinda figured they would do since they seem to have a lot of injuries at that position. And another DL so it looks like they pretty much filled their wish list, except for one thing a punt returning WR!!

Jerry came out and proclaimed the Cowboys were set at the RB position a week or two before the draft, doesn't look like many people believed what he said. But that also doesn't mean they won't trade for one or pick up one released by another team.

good ,they got the O lineman they needed in the 1st pick . They moved up to the #1 pick in the 2nd round to pick a Dback to replace Rolle (cost them 3 later picks ) . They then went for depth on their remaining picks ,including an insurance slot receiver in case Victor Cruz is not ready to start the season.

I wasn't paying too much attention to the draft with all the sports action going on (tabbed by some as "Sportsageddon")...but Hardy just tweeted an ill-advised joke about the 'Twin Towers' "crashing."

The guy may be a football player, but is in possession of a Stegosaurus brain.

Also apparently, Jones drafted another (I can't recall :-( yet another high-skill/"red flag" player. How did the Boys do in your respective opinion?

And Petty...goes to...THE JETS! (referred to in the New York Post as "polarizing.") Any idea why? (other than he's another 'Fundy'?) Finally it likes like the Jets make a good QB decision. After what they did to Tebow I've been pulling for them to crumble. But now I have to pull...for Petty.

Sometimes I start reading in sequence...but maybe I should just read until I get to the bottom. 82, you answered my previous questions.

I've always thought the NFL never placed enough premium on competent offensive linemen -- especially from the blindside.

They could use LBs...but hey -- how about if Dez returns some punts? (chyeah, as though, right? :-)

All three [TEs]they have are coming back and Witten is still performing at a high level.

Yes, Jason Witten is still competitive and a leader in that clubhouse, his hands are still good and he's savvy enough to create separation to find voids in the zone, but I've noticed he's lost that crucial step -- especially man-to-man. It doesn't take much for Father Time to take a physical toll. Witten taken a pounding over the years. OTOH Escobar hasn't quite played up to par (blocking issues) but my guess is they still think they can fix that and he will be Witten's successor.

He's looked good at times (don't know about his blocking abilities.)

I didn't know you were into hockey?? I haven't found too many people that were into it cause most don't understand it, especially the pugilistic aspect.

Oh yeah. Been following since the early 70s --the pre-helmet days. Really wild back then. I was fortunate enough to watch Rangers/Islanders/Flyer TV games all the time. Liked both the Rangers and Isle. Despised the Flyers. Not watching NHL hockey as much during the last 10 years or so.

The styles have really changed....people used to love the "pugilistic" or "enforcer" aspects *for* the anticipated entertainment value; I thought the fighting got too distracting, but intimidation and threat made for compelling strategy and gut-checks. If you get Netflix (don't know if it's still there) there was an interesting "30-30" documentary on former Habs' enforcer (and even one-time Ranger/Bruins) Chris Nilan. Mostly played during the 80s/90s but became a heroin addict. Sad story.

So do we need to start a 2015 Playoff thread or wait awhile and do a 2016 Predictions thread or both??? :)

Heh...Whatchoo think? Rangers won 3-2 and tied up the Caps yesterday -- series at 1-1. Ovechkin -- he's the league's Darth Vader...but a heckuva hockey player.

I got hooked on it when I was living in Texas and went thru the Dallas Stars 2 Cup runs (beat Buffalo and lost to NJ).

Ha...the Mike Modano days? The Stars had some excellent teams. Go to many games? NOTHING like the intensity of NHL playoff hockey.

Randy Gregory was projected to go 1st round top 10 cause of his pass rushing ability, he supposedly was the best one in the draft. But the dumbass decided to do some weed and ended up failing a drug test and fell about 50 spots before the Cowboys drafted him. They supposedly had a meeting with him were he promised "jerra" that he would walk the straight and narrow so they went ahead and pulled the trigger on him.

The team does seem to have personnel just for dealing with problem children and they seem to do better than any other team at it. It all started back when they traded for Haley and has continued to this day. Anyway I'll guess we will see what happens with Gregory, if they can get him to grow up like they did with Dez then they should have a really good player some day. If not then oh well another wasted draft selection.

LOL weren't we just talking about Petty's faith a few weeks ago. And the Jets go out and grab another "Fundie."

LOL.

tabbed by some as "Sportsageddon"

Yeah watched my Spurs lose with one second left. Borderline foul call in the last 8 seconds. Great bit of acting on the Clippers part. Not a big NBA guy but get swept up in Spurs fever where I live and when we lived in SA for a few months 5 summers ago.

Was not tracking the heavyweight fight until yesterday. I'm at the car wash and a youngster working there asked me who did I like.

Focus of Sportsageddon weekend was my son's opening day game. We won 12-2. Sonny boy knocked in 4 runs with a bases loaded line shot in the gap. OFs were playing too shallow so with his speed got an in the park HR. First at bat too. Then he drew a walk and scored a run from that. Big kid who pitches had no balls go out of the infield. Three ground balls for outs and one a throwing error. So no perfect game for him:) But a little league no hitter. Too many BBs though which accounts for one run. Good day until....

The coach of the other team calls time out, comes over to the ump and complains we are a "ringer" team and it was unfair to have all these great players. Ump explained to him the rosters are made by the city parks and rec and are fair and equitable. Funny part is this guy never complained when his son was on my team last year. I even emailed and texted the guy two months before the season to ask him if he wanted to help me coach. He never responded. I shook his hand and sat down with him between innings to see if he received my notes. He did. Seems he wanted to coach himself and rolled the dice and let the parks folks pick his roster.

After this age group (starting with 11 years old) the city runs a draft based on try outs. But for the younger kids parents can request the same coach each year with some exceptions. I think they allow only 6-7 of a 14 player roster to be retained. So I have coached some of the same kids since tball. So has 90% of the other coaches.

They addressed every issue except for WR/punt returner/kick returner, they usually like to have one guy do all three as the 4th receiver. They had a good one in Harris but he signed with the "Vagiants" for about $15M or so and Jerry didn't match the offer, and rightly so too expensive.

You could also say they didn't address the RB slot but they have 4 so.......

Other than that I can't think of anything else they didn't address but that doesn't mean they can't upgrade here and there with other teams releases and undrafted free agents. They always seem to find at least one undrafted free agent every year to keep.

Oh man. 8 secs on the clock? By a questionable foul? Sounds like something that Michael Jordan and the refs used to pull. Not a big NBA guy either...but of all the teams, the Spurs have adopted the concept of "teamwork" well. That's kinda fun to watch.

Was not tracking the heavyweight fight until yesterday. I'm at the car wash and a youngster working there asked me who did I like.

For anyone who remembers Tyson and before, THOSE fights were justifiable hype. Not this.

Focus of Sportsageddon weekend was my son's opening day game. We won 12-2. Sonny boy knocked in 4 runs with a bases loaded line shot in the gap. Hey -- nice day for Coach and his son! Inside the Park slam? 5 ribbie day? The pizza musta tasted good afterward ;-) Big kid pitchers who get shocked by getting bombed is a nice humbling experience.

Good day until....

The sore-loser coach who used to be a sore-loser bully. Seems there's one in every league every year. "Ringers"?? What a great compliment to you and your team, Coach! Lol. Instead of making a scene this guy should have just graciously tipped his cap to your team. Losing like a man is a lesson his kids would have benefited from. He sure had a short memory as his son was on your team last year.

I even emailed and texted the guy two months before the season to ask him if he wanted to help me coach. He never responded. I shook his hand and sat down with him between innings to see if he received my notes. He did. Seems he wanted to coach himself and rolled the dice and let the parks folks pick his roster.

Nice try Red. He wanted to be the boss.... and now blames "ringers" for a loss? Embarrassing. Some guys never learn how to man-up.

That sounds like a fair system, although I imagine some disappointment that all your guys can't remain with you. Your kids will learn a lot from you. About baseball. AND LIFE. Fortunately, my LL coach's temperament was probably a lot like yours. Today's boys more than ever need that example.

90% of the QBs need to sit for at least two years with a clipboard. It's rare that a Wilson or Luck comes out of the shoot as a legit everyday QB. The learning curve is steep, but the Jets are a team that apparently doesn't care about QB "grooming," which why their rooks always look ill-prepared.

Btw -- Have you guys figured out what makes Petty "polarizing"? He's got the physical tools and instincts, right? And he buys his own crab legs as far as I know ;-)

Nice move by the Jets...unless they picked Petty just to "Tebow" him. Can't tell with this org.

Well, we know Geno Smith is NOT an NFL QB. Fitzpatrick is an enigma. He had the Bills going to the playoffs a few years ago...until he threw an ill-advise INT to the Giants and lost the game. That seemed to derail him as well as the Bills. I'd say NFL coaching staffs and systems are a much bigger deal than we know. Walsh, Parcells, and Bellichick prove that.

Knowing the Jets (and their psycho fans) they'll be screaming for Petty (until he tosses an INT in his first drive.)

Destined for suspension and subsequent arrests for GF/dog beatings.

Found a link on the DMN website saying Gregory had bipolar, but when I clicked on it it went nowhere.

How are his hands

"The blocking ability of Geoff Swaim, in line, what you would call the normal wide tight end, he can do a little bit of (pass catching) but that’s not his stock and trade folks. His stock and trade is knocking people off the line of scrimmage, pulling and moving and leading people up into the hole, but he can do a little bit (pass catching)".

Looked up his stats and he has 13 catches for 84 yds.

All I can name is Namath.

Butt fumble Sanchez doesn't count:)

Yeah, Namath is synonymous with "Jets."

Didn't like his flash at the time but the guy had guts, called his own plays, and didn't accrue his passing stats on RB checkdowns as QBs do so often these days. Seemed as if Namath's typical pass play was a 20 yard out or bomb.

Heh -- "Butt-Fumble" Sanchez will *never* live that play down. OR "count" as a *real* QB. It's a miracle the Jets actually got to a title game with that guy.

The big kid is my pitcher. He had a great day too. He knocked his own in the park HR. Almost cleared the fence. He has no wheels so I was spinning that arm to get him in gear to make it home:)

Aaaah...my bad. Thought sonny bopped his shot of "that" pitcher. Well the day was even better; star hurler AND hitter. Lol -- no wheels?? Man, what a scene -- you frantically cranking the arms (as third base coach?) as sonny is staggering toward home plate. Was there throw home? Did he have to slide? Was wifey at the game to videotape the scene?

It was a frenetic, wild action-packed display of skill, heart and determination -- despite a 1-0 score. #1-seed Rangers are now down 2-1 in the series. Tomorrow night is a must-win (in DC.)

Meanwhile, with the Yanks up 1-0 in the 8th to the Jays, MGR Joe Girardi inexplicable decides NOT to go to the league's best set-up guy and closer to finish what should have been a masterpiece. They lost 3-1. Girardi blew it.

Sorry I wrote as if you were 'there.':)

Big kid different kid than my son. My son is tall for his age (10) and thin (and has wheels:). The big kid is a bit chubby and very tall. Puts the smoke in the strike zone. His grandma is his guardian and she keeps a copy of his birth certificate in her purse as he has been challenged on his age by other coaches in the past.

So the big kid almost put one over the fence which is pretty Hooah for his age.

Did you see where the Cowboys signed undrafted free agent La'el Collins to a guaranteed 3 year contract. Kid was supposed to be a first round pick but went undrafted because there was talk he had a hand in the death of his girlfriend.

They sure are making a haul this year, this makes 3 guys who should have went in the 1st round. Albeit 2 of them may turn out to be big headaches BTA they may just work out. Oh well time will tell if they were good moves or not, if not minimal financial outlay..

Have found out they have signed 15 undrafted free agents but haven't found the full list will do some research tonight after work to see if I can find them all. One was a RB and another is a potential replacement for Harris, 5 WRs in all, don't know about QBs though.

Out of this list they're hoping to find at least one WR/PR/KR/Special teams player, and I think they're also looking for another Special Teams/LB or Special Teams/S/CB.

I actually think the average of the top 3-5 is proper pay for Dez. He is not better than the top 3 but more like the 5th best receiver in the game.

The problem for Dez is that Tony has only another year or 2 and thats it. After that Cowboys are in a rebuilding phase and do not need to be held down by crazy contracts. No win situations. Dez wants a 5 year contract with guaranty pay.

This team "overall" is way too young to go into another "total" rebuilding phase. Teams are always rebuilding to some extent (get rid of 3-4 older guys acquire 3-4 younger ones every year) some just require more rebuilding than others. And some have the right players but the coaching staff needs to be schitt canned.

Jerry and Company will either find Romo's replacement in the next draft or will go after one via the trade/FA route.

Cowboys DE Greg Hardy's suspension reduced to 4 games

Well the funny part about this situation is "BOTH" of them called 911 and accused the other of attacking them. And then after it's just about all over with she can't be found to testify at the trial so all of the charges are dropped.

Since he only played one game last year because of this and lost all of that money you would think "time served" would be enough. At least it was in Adrian Peterson's case so why not in Hardy's case?? (I guess the seriousness of the charge outweighs the actual validity of the charge)...

Remember when Michael Irvin and Erik Williams were accused of rape and it was found out the woman lied about it. Hmmmmm kinda makes you wonder about Hardys case.

Horn: What ESPN plans to do in 90-minute Cowboys training camp special

Barry Horn Follow @bhorn55 BHorn@dallasnews.com

Published: 24 July 2015 05:02 PM

Updated: 25 July 2015 01:28 AM

Largely boxed out from prime-time regular-season Cowboys games by NBC, which has an annual three-to-one advantage, and outside the lines when it comes to training camp sagas as brought to you by HBO’s Hard Knocks, ESPN has come up with a way to add Cowboys content to its programming lineup.

Coming to a TV set near you on Aug. 4, a Tuesday, will be a live 90-minute special from the Cowboys’ Oxnard, Calif., training camp.

The idea is to take viewers through an afternoon practice with Kenny Mayne, Jon Gruden and Darren Woodson as tour guides.

This will be ESPN’s second such foray into training camp. Last summer the concept debuted with the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. If you think the New England Patriots, the Seahawks’ successors as kings of the hill, would be the logical choice for this summer, you haven’t been paying attention.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick would rather have outside cameras at his anesthesia-less root canal than invite them into his training camp laboratory. The Patriots, history has shown, prefer to be on the other side of the lens.

So when ESPN producer Jay Rothman decided on an encore performance of his inside training camp experiment, he went directly to a team with “meat on the bone” that doesn’t mind offering a taste. The Cowboys provide the perfect ingredients, including an owner who likes cameras and a magnet that draws eyeballs.

In an interview this week, Rothman said he approached the receptive Cowboys at the Super Bowl and got the final approval last month.

“Jerry Jones is terrific, he gets it,” said Rothman, whose main role is producing Monday Night Football. “And there’s no secret that with the Cowboys, the ratings are big.”

(Note: The Cowboys-Redskins appearance on Monday Night Football in October was easily the highest-rated and most-watched game on ESPN last season.)

The idea for the training camp series popped into Rothman’s head while he watched an ESPN special that focused on Boston Red Sox batting practice soon after the start of the 2014 season.

(Added note: The other team taking batting practice that day at Fenway Park was the Rangers.)

Rothman thought the idea would easily translate to the NFL.

Unlike Hard Knocks, which lingers at training camps and depends on character development, Rothman’s production will rely on Xs and Os. Already he has met with Gruden and Woodson for six hours of Cowboys film study.

You might expect ESPN to “mike up” several players, coaches and a certain general manager. But that won’t be the case.

Rothman explained he tried that approach with the Seahawks and didn’t like the results. Besides, it’s always dangerous to have hot microphones in a live athletic setting.

Toward the end of our conversation, Rothman noted that although his show, scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m., was booked for 90 minutes, it could go longer.

(Final note: Last season Gruden sat down with Jones for what was to be a four-minute feature. They talked much longer. Rothman deemed it worthy for more. There was “enough meat on the bone” for a 30-minute special, which drew surprisingly strong ratings.)

Most assuredly there will be replays of the Cowboys training camp show on a variety of ESPN networks. Who knows? This could translate into an annual event. Maybe even a series. When it comes to the Cowboys, the networks’ appetites are insatiable.

Didn't know if you guys had seen this or not.

They either believe McFadden solves that void, OR will rummage thru roster dumpsters and free agency.

From what I'm hearing from training camp McFadden is doing just fine, they are happy with what they have... Now that could change tomorrow as you all well know...

Thinking the Jints need to score in the high 20s each week . But was listening to Kim Jones and she seems to think that the Spagnola D will attack regardless of the skill level of the players ...which will make a big difference from last years Jints D .

I do think the Phillie Beagles will be even better than last year . But Murray will not be as productive back as he was with Dallas . I liked what I saw of Joseph Randel so kinda surprised that the Cowboys are going to give McFadden a lot of touches.

Going to miss Steve Weatherford on the Jints . I like punters who play the game like linebackers . He also has the best build of any player in the game . espn.go.com/video/clip? id=11817111

I don't think any team would stand much of a chance of making the playoffs scoring less than 27 points a game. Especially now in the salary cap era were it's very hard to have both a good offense and a good defense, it's usually one or the other...

Seahawks averaged only 20 ppg last year and made super bowl.

Actually almost 25 points per game, 24.625 to be precise... And their strength is on defense not offense where they gave up only 15.875 points per game...

The average defense gave up right at 23 points per game last year which is what I was basing my statement on...

The Giants averaged giving up exactly 25 points per game last year, 400 in 16 games.

From what I'm hearing from training camp McFadden is doing just fine, they are happy with what they have... Now that could change tomorrow as you all well know...

Well tomorrow is here and it did change somewhat, they made a trade with Seattle for a little used RB.

Spags has no other choice than to be super aggressive with an individual skill level on the D that's totally lacking. The sum is going to have to be much greater than its inferior parts.

No doubt -- McFadden could well be a fine back for the Boys. He played well with an inferior O-Line at Oakland, he s got good vision. But as well all know, BOTH the running game AND passing game is only as good as the O-Line plays. And at this juncture few teams know exactly how well their O-Lines will perform.

Kelly advised him to go to CFL and hone his skills. That was the path to success for Warren Moon and Doug Flutie (another Heisman Trophy winner). Not sure if he will do that or go back to his SEC commentator gig.

Since we are not talking much about the Dallas Cowboys, that means the Rangers are still in the hunt:)

Since the first game has went by and nobody has commented figure I would make some...

Cowboys won on a last second drive to beat the Giants, looks like their strategy of trying to run out the clock instead of scoring the TD to put them up by 2 scores backfired...

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/13656963/rashad-jennings-new-york- giants-says-was-told-not-score-end-dallas-cowboys-game

Cowboys did it with Dez sitting in the locker room with a broken bone in foot, will be out 4-6 weeks from what I heard... Haven't seen where they are going to try to get another receiver so figure we will see a lot more of Gavin Escobar taking on a WR role to fill the void. He's big and fast so he might do alright, Tony will need to learn to trust him more though...

Went over to the "Iggles" website and seen DeMarco Murray had an outstanding day running the ball 8 carries 9 yards... LOL

WOW 8 carries 9 yards?

I like DeMarco but he was asking too much.

I almost walked away when the Gaints were about to make it a 2 score game and my recording stopped. I like to record the game so I don't have to watch 5 minutes of play and 10 minutes of commercial. So I kicked the tv on channel 5 and it has the cowboys at the 10 yard line! OMG what the hell happen!! LOL

Cowboys just shot themselves in the foot over and over again. Beaslys fumble(TD), then Tony put it behind Witten(TD), Dez dropped a easy catch we needed(-TD) and then his replacement had one bounce off him into the arms of the defense(3pts). Defense really kept the Gaints to 6pts!

Gaints are kicking themselves all the way back home!

Us Jint fans are used to one or two brain farts a season. But this was a whopper . Eli actually told Jennings to NOT score on the goal line. That would've worked too if Eli had the sense to take a knee on third down instead of throwing the ball away . Did he not see the end of the Superbowl this year ?

I thought the Boy's strategy of ball control was brilliant . If they did not have bad mistakes like the pick 6 they would've won the game easily .

The Jints are going to regret the lost opportunity of stealing a road win against a division opponent who is clearly better than them.

Guess we'll see how much Scandrick meant to them since he is out for the season, see how well the rookie Jones fills in for him... As far as I can tell they haven't picked up any CBs or Safeties so they must think what they have is good enough...

Which means, he should have taken the market value of his talent with such an offensive line.

The RB 'market' is kind of depressed right now with so many RBs about the same.

We have always gotten torched by the secondary. Its been dallas's biggest issue. Hold a team to nothing on the short throw or run but get creamed by one play long.

Another issue that has always bothered me is we do not have a bruiser for running back like Peterson, Lynch or Jacobs. Someone that walks around 230-240 that can make other teams secondary run for cover. We always get some 200-220lb and they get beat to death.

Putting stock in the first games of the season is usually a waste of time, the last ones are the most important and are the best indicator of the team as a whole. I've seen teams start 6-0 and end up 8- 8 if not worse.

The reason they picked Cassel up is that he has some experience with the Offensive system the Boys run. It is more complicated than a lot of other teams systems and makes it almost impossible for them to pick someone up off the street and have him learn it in a few weeks...

Having both Romo and Bryant out at the same time will force the Boys to rely on the OL and the running game more than ever, I.E. ball control offense. Which means they should have all the kinks worked out by the time those 2 come back. So if they can continue to win some games (the QB be a bus driver and be at .500 when those 2 come back) they should still have a decent shot at the division and the playoffs. The rest of the NFC East looks to be weak this year so 9-7 should get the job done...

In another 2 weeks Hardy and McClain will be back which will make the Defense even tougher to play against, just in time for the Patriots to stroll into town. It would be fun to watch "Deflategate" head home with tears in his eyes... (LOL)...

Question: How many teams do you know that have made the playoffs with just a ball control offense, bus driver QB and a good defense???

Answer: A lot and some have even won the big dance...
