German newspaper that reprinted Charlie Hebdo cartoons firebombed

By Eugene Volokh January 11 at 1:03 PM

Arsonists struck at the Hamburger Morgenpost in Hamburg, northern Germany, on Sunday morning. The newspaper ran caricatures from Charlie Hebdo after the French satirical newspaper was attacked Wednesday. (Bodo Marks/DPA via AP) Fortunately, this happened at night, and no-one was injured. The Associated Press reports:

Police in Germany have detained two men suspected of an arson attack early Sunday against a newspaper that republished the cartoons of French weekly Charlie Hebdo.

The newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost said on its website the overnight arson attack destroyed several files in its archive, but didn’t injure anyone.

Eugene Volokh teaches free speech law, religious freedom law, church-state relations law, a First Amendment Amicus Brief Clinic, and tort law, at UCLA School of Law, where he has also often taught copyright law, criminal law, and a seminar on firearms regulation policy.

If sysadmin weren't so whinny and lazy, he'd do some research on the site he's actively campaigning for the ownership he keeps belly aching he does not want...go figure!

Anyway! I would never post an intire WAPO article, but with Sally's permission, I have been posting EXCERPTS, no more than 2 at a time, with links, from their news stories...for many, many years, and she has never been approached by them because of this, or ever asked me to stop.

IMO, the sysadmin was influenced by the gatlin crowd to use my Vololk posting to ban me. It backfired on them.

I never violated the WP edict, but I posted full articles from the Volokh site even after their move, because I thought their free for discussion policy still applied.

In any case, an individuals right to copy and publish on the web, -- full articles for discussion purposes only, -- has yet to be decided.

They are a lot less litigious than they were a decade back. They likely regret suing TOS in retrospect.

There is a difference between these sites. TOS and LF are fully indexed by Google and every search engine around, likely consuming more of LF's bandwidth than its users do. LP, 4um and TPF are all dark web sites, forbidding search engines to index them and every comment made by every user. This info, in addition to increasingly available public IP address info, allows Them to match your anonymous posts to your IP address easily. Not just NSA and perhaps FBI but all the data-warehousing clowns who will sell data to anyone.

In addition, TOS was a for-profit aggregator so they almost volunteered to get sued by these powerful media companies.

LF is less attractive to sue because it is non-profit at present.

If you think the government can't search every site you are a fool.

We do nothing illegal here so it doesn't matter anyway.

I never said any such thing. And Big Gov is only one of a large number of data warehouse operations. NSA drinks directly from the firehose (internet backbone). And FBI has considerable capability but lacks the best analysts and organization. And is calling someone a fool over what you imagined they said a part of the newer nicer Stone for the New Year?

Matthew 5:22 - ...whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

We do nothing illegal here so it doesn't matter anyway.

Yes, it does matter.

Well I honestly think it is foolish if anyone thinks what you mentioned is going to stop anyone if the government from doing anything.

Nothing personal.

Gentle talk is usually better. As they say, we can disagree without being disagreeable. Unless I get mad at someone and then the stuff really hits the fan.

Matthew 5:22 - ...whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Full verse below:

Matthew 5:

22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12)

I don't want to be in danger of hell fire.

What is the context if you could please?

Well, the context early in the verse is among Christian brethren. Apparently, there was some namecalling in the ranks, including an implied threat of bringing them before a church council who might decide to expel them from the local church. So it was kind of like moderating a political forum, eh? The verse ends with a general admonition not to call anyone a fool because the namecalling was considered a bad tendency. Which is also kind of true on political forums. It tends to end discussion when you announce your opponent is a fool or a knave. And people do use namecalling just to shut down debate entirely as we have seen many times on other forums.

Not that you should take anyone throwing a single phrase from a bible verse as a condemnation. I simply taking exception to the fool business. The word fool was very much a fighting word in ancient times, like insulting someone's ancestry.

I think the verse gives the context of "brother" when addressing the dire warnings.

We do know from Solomon in Proverbs the following in dealing with fools or foolishness:

Proverbs 26 New King James Version (NKJV)

3 A whip for the horse, A bridle for the donkey, And a rod for the fool’s back.

4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,Lest you also be like him.

5 Answer a fool according to his folly, Lest he be wise in his own eyes.

6 He who sends a message by the hand of a fool Cuts off his own feet and drinks violence.

7 Like the legs of the lame that hang limp Is a proverb in the mouth of fools.

8 Like one who binds a stone in a sling Is he who gives honor to a fool.

9 Like a thorn that goes into the hand of a drunkard Is a proverb in the mouth of fools.

10 The great God who formed everything Gives the fool his hire and the transgressor his wages.

11 As a dog returns to his own vomit, So a fool repeats his folly.

12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12)

I always thought that by 'fool', they meant what we would call developmentally disabled. Neither the Romans nor the Semitic peoples were very kind to unfortunates.
