They gave up Sardinas and other pieces for Gallardo who has had a much better and steady career.

Rangers pitchers have surrendered 57 runs over the last six games.
You know I'm beginning to wonder if it's the pitchers or the pitches the catchers/bench are calling for?

Looks like the Rangers were lucky when they decided not to pursue Ervin Santana in the off season.

Just goes to show you that changing speeds/angle of your pitches is still the way to go instead of throwing "flames".

Yes saw that alert. Sometimes you think GMs know who is using.
Had my first practice with the kiddo team today. Good contact good arms, now need a couple to control their pitches. We will get there. Have a month before first game.

I take it you watched the game. It wasn't on here but the Stars vs Sharks was. :)

Sonny Gray has been hard on the Rangers for awhile now and it was the first game of the season, and I have no doubt some of the guys haven't gotten their swing yet.
Sonny went 8 innings cause he threw strikes, Gallardo went 4 innings cause he didn't throw strikes. If Gallardo keeps this up against the stronger lineups of the AL then they wasted 3 prospects acquiring him, another Garza scenario.

Yes but JD was desperate for another veteran arm. Turns out if he did not go for Gallardo the Yu injury would have been more of an impact.

Only if he can give them 6-7 innings consistently, if he can't then Tepesch's salary (500K)is much more palatable for 4-5 innings than Gallardos (11.5Mil). Either way you're gonna see the middle relievers a lot.

Good pitching from Colby. Fielder gets two hits/2 RBI. Martin got on base a couple of times. A rookie set up reliever pitches out of his own jam and keeps his cool. Tolleson has a 1-2-3 8th inning. Feliz closes without theatrics.
Not bad.

Looks like he's finally going with the pitch instead of trying to pull it all the time, wonder if he decided to do this himself or Bannister told him to. If his final stats ended up with only 10 homers but 120+ RBIs I would be happy as a clam. That means his RBIs were spread out more into more critical situations instead of coming all at once only once a week or so.

I have a sneaking suspicion that if Feliz falters around mid season Kela will be given the chance to be the closer. That is if he has progressed with his pitches and has been effective.

If not they have HOF pitcher Pedro Martinez on the show tonight and they are talking about hit batsman and retaliation. Pedro hit 140+ batsmen in his career and he was asked how many of them he hit on purpose in retaliation for his teammates being Hit By Pitch, he answered probably 98% or so. Now that's protecting your teammates and a man after my own heart.

No watching the Ranger game. Kazmir dealing. Rangers befuddled through 3.
Detwiler doing good. Gave up a deep hit to center and Laurie tried to stretch it to three. Martin and Elvis gunned him down:)

Don't know if it's a Banister thing. But in three games I have not seen the catcher go to the mound to settle a pitcher. Nor have I seen Maddux go out to settle a pitcher. Not one visit tonight to Detwiler. None. Now they just took him out. Did MLB change some rules to speed up the game?

They are limiting the time between pitches/innings and making the batters stay in the box more but haven't heard about limiting visits to the mound, think that might be a Bannister/Maddux thing. When Kela was pitching the other night Maddux went out and settled him down, he said "You do have other pitches you know" (meaning other than his "heeter"). Lol

That is the way the game is supposed to be played, you throw at the other team they throw back at you. You try to show up the other team or run your mouth at them they will get you back, plain pure and simple.
Nowadays you get warned for "accidentally" hitting the opposition, they don't automatically suspend/fine you for charging the mound and they let you stand and admire your HRs instead of running the bases. Its MLBs fault not the players fault, let the players police the game more and it will be better.
On the other hand drilling a guy in the back for being a turd is one thing, going headhunting is something different altogether and should be dealt with harshly.
We used to throw at baserunners and idiots in the dugout all the time to get the point across that you should let your play do the talking not your mouth or stupid behavior!! I can't remember a single time the umps threw any of my guys out of the game for "policing" behavior, he would just break up the scrum and walk back to behind the plate smiling...

Ugly last night but only the first week of the season. I am reminded we started out seasons 8-0 and then had to fight it out with Oakland at the end of the year.

Yes it is 'part of the game.'
Even at youth league level (ages 9-10) there is 'smack' talk going on. Of course the TTBA rules emphasize sportsmenship, so we do emphasize no trash talk and let your bat and glove do the talking. I agree.
I have this one kid who is a decent player for his age. He was playing right field and he was talking trash to a kid from another team on first base. The kid got on with a bad call from the ump (Sonny boy of mine clearly had him beat to the bag). So my right fielder started shouting to the kid on first "you got lucky, you can't hit" etc. The kid looked back at the RFer, took his eye off the plate and batter, and then the batter hit a ball straight to first and my son doubled him up unassisted:) Well I guess my son was assisted by the kid in right field:) I did have a talk with the RFer and told him not to do that. If someone is to 'strike up a conversation' with a runner on first, it should be the first basemen.

8-0 now. I see they split up Andrus and Beltre batting back to back finally.

I thought Martinez was gonna be out by the 6th on pitch count but he managed to get under control and last another inning, he did a damn good job today.
Martinez gave up four hits in seven scoreless innings, his sixth straight start with two or fewer earned runs allowed. I think he is gonna be a permanent member of the rotation if he keeps that up. :)

Ugly last night but only the first week of the season.
You're always gonna have a few ugly games each year I think it's unavoidable.
Something stupid happens early in the game and it just snowballs from there, nothing you can do about it except forget it happened.

Nick Martinez did great. I think him coming up last year getting bruised up a bit put a lot of hair on his chest at 24. From the reporting he had a great September under Bogar.
Of course now I claim Martinez as he is a Fordham grad:) Finally, great to see an active pro player from my small alma mater.
And yes taking Andrus down from second in the order is a move that should have happened two years ago. One of the "Washisms" that needed to go. Bannister is showing the team he is in charge of that club house. Change is good in baseball as with any profession.

Yep loved watching that game. Caught most of it on replay. He was dealing to veteran bats like Butler.
On another note, I hope Rua (good game yesterday) finds his way to consistency.
He looked lost the first three games.
The change for the good I saw so far is the Rangers batters are taking advantage of mistakes made by pitchers. That was a problem last year and the year before.

I was kinda wondering how that was going to translate knowing he had a new manager and that the new manager liked his pitchers to pitch inside. Didn't see the game so don't know if he was doing what he did last year and had success with or was pitching more inside.

True, but who are you going to put into the 2nd slot on a regular basis?
You could put Choo there but I think that's a waste, he's better in the leadoff slot or the 5th slot. And if you make him leadoff and drop Martin to 2nd then who is gonna cover Fielders back, not Moreland.
Truthfully I don't think there is a 2nd slot hitter on the roster unless DeShields can become an everyday player.

And Holland went out after one inning today, wonder how long he will be out?
But Bass came in and did a hell of a job for 5 innings, can't ask for much more than that from your middle reliever.
