Title: 'Duck Dynasty' Dad Suspended Following Anti-Gay Remarks

UPDATE: On Wednesday afternoon, A&E, the cable network which airs "Duck Dynasty," suspended Phil Robertson indefinitely from filming, issuing the following statement: "We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series 'Duck Dynasty.' His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely."

GLAAD issued the following statement in response to A&E's decision, attributed to GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz: "What’s clear is that such hateful anti-gay comments are unacceptable to fans, viewers, and networks alike. By taking quick action and removing Robertson from future filming, A&E has sent a strong message that discrimination is neither a Christian nor an American value."

The stars of "Duck Dynasty" might be America's most popular TV family, but that could change very soon — because Phil Robertson has made some seriously divisive anti-gay remarks that have sparked instant backlash.

Speaking with GQ, Robertson lamented that when "everything is blurred on what's right and what's wrong ... sin becomes fine." So just what qualifies as sinful in his book?

"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there — bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men," he declared.

[Related: How 'Duck Dynasty' Became Such a Huge Hit]

Phil probably should have cut himself off at this point (considering he's a national TV star), but instead he paraphrased Corinthians. "Don't be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God," he warned. "Don't deceive yourself. It's not right."

What's more, according to him, it's basically incomprehensible. "It seems to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man's anus," he explained. "That's just me. I'm just thinking, 'There's more there! She's got more to offer.' I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It's not logical, my man. It's just not logical."

Within minutes of GQ revealing Robertson's quotes (which will appear in the January issue), GLAAD issued a fiery response — and the gay-rights organization is none too pleased.

[Related: A Very Ducky Christmas — Robertsons Revisit Ghosts of Christmases Past]

"Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil's lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe," said GLAAD spokesman Wilson Cruz. "He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans — and Americans — who support legal recognition for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples. Phil's decision to push vile and extreme stereotypes is a stain on A&E and his sponsors who now need to reexamine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families."

Cruz, who cited an August Public Policy Polling survey showing 56 percent of Louisiana residents supported same-sex marriage, stopped short of calling for an all-out boycott of "Duck Dynasty."

Despite Phil's strong words, however, he insists he's a Christian who doesn't condemn others — even if they are "sinners" in his mind.

"We never, ever judge someone on who's going to heaven, hell. That's the Almighty's job," he told the magazine. "We just love 'em, give 'em the good news about Jesus — whether they're homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort 'em out later, you see what I'm saying?"

Still, Robertson insisted that his family "really believes strongly that if the human race loved each other and they loved God, we would just be better off. We ought to just be repentant, turn to God, and… everything will turn around."

And it seems that the tide is already turning, considering the fact that once GLAAD issued its statement, Phil was quick to clarify — and soften— his previous remarks.

"I myself am a product of the '60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior," the TV star said in a statement released by A&E Wednesday. "My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the Bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other."

And there you have it — at least for now. While Phil is standing by his opinions, he might be feeling a bit repentant about the way he originally stated them.

So much for tolerance. The PAGAN mafia strikes again.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Yeah,Phil has every right in the world to his opinion, and also has the right to express his opinion under normal circumstances.

This wasn't a normal set of circumstances. He was speaking as an employee of a tv network, and by doing so he threatened their business and their profits. The right and logical result was the network suspended him to protect themselves from the boycotts by the Homosexual Mafia that had already started. The network is in business to make profits, not express opinions.

Having said that, there is nothing keeping Phil and his family from standing up on their hind legs and stating they meant every word Phil said because those are their religious convictions, and that if the network doesn't like it they can suspend the whole family and cancel the show. That IS the American way and is fair to everyone.

The only thing that might stop them is greed because they don't want to lose the buckets of cash coming in.

Now I guess we all get to see if their bank accounts are more important to them than their religious beliefs.

You can't possibly believe all homosexuals are child molesters, can you?

Who cares what some 'celebrity' says or thinks?

Fred, this is a good First Amendment discussion. As to both range and limitations.

Phil has the right to think and say anything he wants to think and say as an individual,as long as it isn't slander.

What he doesn't have a right to do is speak as an employee of his employer, and cause harm to his employers profits and existence.

The network did what they had to do and suspended Phil to protect themselves, and now Phil and his entire family have the right to speak up and either support Phil and tell the network to suspend them all and cancel the show if they don't like it,or to stay silent and keep cashing the checks.

At this point it is entirely up to them, but chances are that choice will be made for them within a few weeks because we all know the Homo Mafia is NOT going to let this thing go until they have exhibited their power by getting the show cancelled.

It all depends on what is more important to the Robertson family at this point, another month or so of paychecks,or standing up for their stated principals.

Time will tell.

The good news is the whole family is loaded with money now,and none of the grandchildren are going to miss out on going to college where they want due to a lack of money.

I guess that all depends on whether or not the fundies like you organize a letter-writing campaign to the network and threaten a boycott unless they re-instate Phil. I am just guessing at the actual numbers, but my best guess is there are more fundies like you than there are homosexuals,so the ball is in YOUR court from this point forward.

You can stand with the perverts and deviants. Normal Americans reject the weirdos agenda.

I stand with the Bill of Rights and reject any agenda that opposes equal treatment of all Americans BY THE GOVERNMENT.

Since this isn't the government doing this, but Americans on both sides of the issue and a network trying to keep itself alive, all sides are right and I'm not taking one. It's called "Freedom of Choice",and homosexuals have as much right to enjoy it as you or I.

In FACT,this incident only furthers my contention that businesses have the right to refuse to hire and admit anyone they want because business owners and stock holders are citizens, also.

This is one that needs to be settled by the market place.

I'm starting to understand why God said don't let a faggot live.

It is about nothing else from your POV. YOU,who claim to be a conservative, want to use the power of government to discriminate against homosexuals because you think your God hates them.

Fags don't breed, they recruit.

Can YOU be recruited? Is that what you are afraid of?

And you have absolutely lost your mind if you think homos don't father children or give birth to children,or that there is anything new about this.

A case can even be made that you are working at cross-purposes to try to keep them from marrying each other, and demanding they marry someone of the opposite gender if they do marry. If they marry each other and quit having children, there will be fewer and fewer homosexuals born each year. There will no doubt always be some born, but there would be fewer of them.

The only thing new about it is that people talk about it in public now, instead of whisper to each other about it when there is no one else around.

Pete a reasoned and realistic response. What I see is a double standard. We have news personalities on MSNBC calling Laura Ingram a "conservative slut" and nothing happens. MSNBC refused to fire O'Donnell and he refused to apologize. There are serial offenders on the left (you know the accounts I am sure) and nothing happens. The only leftist to show some integrity was MSNBC's Bashir who voluntarily resigned. MSNBC was in no hurry to fire him.

A&E is a business and 98% of their programming caters to a population that is not Christian and not conservative. Bottom line a business decision is going to be tough for them. Although their programming leans heavily left, their hottest show and inflow of money is from Duck Dynasty.

I think Phil could have been more measured in his response, but then that would have been out of character for him.

No you don't. You just feel that way because there are sex perverts in your family. If you thought that way you would be consistent and favor Mike Tyson joining the womans Olympic boxing team. But you don't. That makes you a hypocrite who picks one issue out of the air.

You have said the fag gene runs in your family. You have no kids. You have never been married. You don't have the life experiences to make a good decision.

Since you have never made the commitment to be married. You don't really know what marriage is. You haven't a clue.

You have never had kids. So you don't know what it is like to protect them from sexual predators (fags).

This is not a First Amendment issue [sneakypete #13]. Robertson can and did say what he felt like saying. He did not do so as an employee of his employer [sneakypete #11]. I believe A&E neither set up the interview, nor did they have any representative present. Robertson's employer can suspend or cancel him unless (unlikely) a contract provision does not allow it without some due process (as seen with government jobs). The public statements of Robertson, even if made in his private capacity, clearly may affect the business interests of A&E.

The bible is clear and explicit in condemning homosexual sex.

New American Standard

[Leviticus 18:22] "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination."

[Leviticus 20:13] "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them."

[Leviticus 20:15] "If there is a man who lies with an animal, he shall surely be put to death; you shall also kill the animal."

[Leviticus 20:16] "If there is a woman who approaches any animal to mate with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them."

In re homosexuality, Robertson did not do much more than profess his belief in the bible and paraphrased what it says.

As for Robertson addressing homosexuality and bestiality, the bible separates them only by one verse addressing a man marrying a woman and her mother.

This GLAAD nonsense about Christian doctrine is clearly in conflict with the explicit Christian doctrine expressed in the bible. If Robertson is guilty of "public disdain for LGBT people," so is the word of God as expressed in the bible. There do not appear to be any "Robertson lies about an entire community," or about anyone or anything. Stating a good faith belief is something, even if someone else finds it obnoxious, is not a lie.

The GLAAD/LGBT position is really that the bible is a convenient work of fiction and the inspired work of men in their own interest. GLAAD's real complaint is against the bible being portrayed as the inspired word of God, and Robertson repeating what the bible says and expressing his belief in the bible.

As for GLAAD spokesman claiming support of the majority of Louisianans and Americans, that is support to live their lives free from discrimination. Robertson did not discriminate against them or anyone. He exercised his right to express Christian doctrine, as expressed in the bible, and his belief in said doctrine. Stating a belief is not an act of discrimination or defamation.

"On August 14, 2013, the season four premiere drew a total of 11.8 million viewers, an increase of 37% vs. the season three premiere, drawing 6.3 million viewers in the Adults 25–54 demographic, making it the most watched nonfiction series telecast in cable television history."

Editing controversy

In 2012, Phil Robertson said he confronted producers of Duck Dynasty about editors of the show telling them not to say "Jesus" during their prayer at the end of episodes and adding "fake bleeps" when there was no profanity spoken.

Robertson spoke about the fake bleeps, saying, "They inserted fake bleeps, like someone had used profanity, but no one had used profanity". Robertson said the editors "probably thought that there was some profanity going on" even though there was "zero". Robertson responded by saying, "If you want that, oh, you can get all of that you want. Just turn the station. There's plenty of that. If we're not using profanity, why make it look like we're using profanity? What is the point? Why don't you just run it, and say what we say. They're like, 'You got a point.' So they quit doing that."

Robertson then said, "The other thing was when we prayed, we said, 'In Jesus' name, amen' … they would just have me say, 'And thank you, Lord, for the food, thank you for loving us, amen.' Robertson responded by saying, "So I said, 'why would you cut out in Jesus' name?" Robertson's paraphrased response of the editors was they "don't want to offend some of the Muslims, or something." Robertson responded by saying our calendar year is labeled Anno Domini (A.D.), which means "in the year of Our Lord". Robertson then said, "I said, 'You Hollywood cats are counting time by Jesus just like I am.' I would think that out of all of the people that walk planet Earth, if we've all decided in America to count time by just one of them, Jesus of Galilee, I don't think it hurts to throw his name in there from time to time". Robertson then said, "So I noticed now, every once in a while, they're leaving it in there."

This is not A&E's introduction to the issue of Christianity being part of this highly successful, money making television show. When last confronted, they managed to leave Jesus in there once in a while. The 11.8 million viewers are unlikely to have included any large contingent from GLAAD.

GLAAD claims "More than 15,000 members make GLAAD a powerful force for change in the media industry and a leader for LGBT equality."

If all 15,000 of them had tuned in, they would have made 0.13% of the viewing audience of 11.8 million.

If A&E does not want them, someone else will.

That is cutting to the bone Stone

I could have probably worded it a little nicer.

I think Pete thinks what he thinks because he has queers in his family. I think sex pervert is accurate.

I would knock you right on your ass had you said that to my face

I wouldn't say that to your face or anyones face. It is easier to say things like that on the internet. I'm more polite in person.

But I doubt you could knock me on my ass.

Admit it,everything you are saying is based on hysterical emotion, and none of it on fact

No Pete that would be you. You base it on the belief that your family carries the queer gene. You react emotionally because you don'w want to upset the sex perverts in your family. Purely emotional. And evil.

I retract "evil". Just wrong.

A case can even be made that you are working at cross-purposes to try to keep them from marrying each other, and demanding they marry someone of the opposite gender if they do marry. If they marry each other and quit having children, there will be fewer and fewer homosexuals born each year.

I'm for preserving the culture I grew up in. Men and women get married, not men and men. Every society for thousands of years has thought that with minuscule exception. You are asking society to change its norms that have served it well for centuries on the whim of some sexual perverts. Because they want to feel accepted. I think it is good enough to leave the be as long as they are not tryint to legitimize their perversion and call it right and they need to stop trying to recruit kids. It is sick.

Also your claim about fewer homos born each year is absurd. First you aren't born that way. Second being a queer doesn't mean your kids will necessarily become that way. Although I'm sure it probably increases the likelihood. I mean teaching kids that wrong is right.

What I see is a double standard.

And there is nothing wrong with your vision. This isn't going to change, either. The entire national media is owned by a small group of globalists,so their viewpoint is going to be the only one heard or promoted.

I think Phil could have been more measured in his response, but then that would have been out of character for him.

My guess is he will stand by what he said and let the cards fall where they may,but we will find out soon enough.

That explains everything. You have had your opinion shaped by them.

It explains nothing other than the fallacy of your assumptions. I never said I particularly liked any of them.

My opinion is shaped by the Preamble to the US Constitition "All men are created equal....". You ain't got to like them, but you do have to recognize they have the same rights as the rest of us.

If queers really are born that way. That means you carry the queer gene.

ROFLMAO! Seems like genetics is something else you know nothing about.

You're pro pervert because your familiy is perverts.

I am NOT "pro-pervert",you freaking idiot! I'm pro-American.

A queer is by definition a sex pervert.

You are getting worse with every day that passes. You seem more obsessed with homosexual sex than homosexuals are.

No you don't. You just feel that way because there are sex perverts in your family. I

Stone, you really are a ignorant buffoon. You have queers in YOUR family. So does everybody else. You just don't know it.

If you thought that way you would be consistent and favor Mike Tyson joining the womans Olympic boxing team.

Are you on drugs? Can you POSSIBLY be so stupid you confuse Mike Tyson with a lesbian? Seriously?

You have said the fag gene runs in your family.

No,you retard,I said there are homosexuals that are related to me.

Guess what,Spanky? According to YOUR definition, you have fag genes running in your family, too.

You have no kids. You have never been married. You don't have the life experiences to make a good decision.

What would you know about either life experiences or good decisions?

You really and truly are a fool.

No wonder you are religious. There is no place on earth a fool can feel more at home than in a religious cult.

He did not do so as an employee of his employer [sneakypete #11]

Yeah,he did. The only reason he was being interviewed is because he is the star of his family show on A&E.
